The Worcester Phoenix July 3 - 10, 1998 galleries art museums other museums hot links Wood cheer Carol Santora makes colorful scenes by Leon Nigrosh THE PRINTMAKING ART OF CAROL SANTORA At Surroundings Gallery, 377 Main Street, Gardner, through July 17. Tucked away in the North County town of Gardner, Surroundings Gallery is a tiny gem of an gallery. It's housed in a former livery stable built in 1880. Its rough-hewn post and beam interior beautifully frames the pristine white walls on which more than 30 woodcut prints by Carol Santora currently hang. Santora herself hails from nearby Westminster, where for the past 15 years she has been producing art, concentrating on wood block-printmaking. She employs several different printmaking methods, from the Japanese ukiyo-e style of multiple blocks, to the jigsaw method, and the reductive method of using one block for all the colors in a particular print. Although she often hand rubs individual prints, all of the works in this exhibit were pulled from an antique Poco proof press. To help visitors understand the different tools and methods, Santora has a display case in this exhibit showing actual tools with concise written explanations of how they are employed. Her series Fisherman's Catch presents an excellent example of just how the reductive technique works. Because only a few marks are cut into the original block, the first print is densely black, with an interesting, but barely discernible image. More marks are cut into the same block to create stage two, in which we can see a large fish mouth and eyes emerging from a swirl of bubbles.

It does not really discuss non-toxic alternatives. McCann focuses more on precautions for rather than avoidance of hazardous conditions. The following are some simple substitutions that make the print shop safer... sunflower seed salad oil rather than spirit solvents to dilute and clean-up oil based inks. acrylic floor polish in place of hardground (while wet it dissolves in water... once dry household ammonia is used to remove it). vaseline mixed with liquid soap in place of soft ground.

Contacting Keith Howard Intaglio and the Tradition of Toxicity Printmaking is a universally accepted and widely practiced aspect of art education that has historical roots going back several centuries. Most traditional printmaking techniques were developed hundreds of years before the concepts of occupational health and safety and environmental awareness were considered. Consequently, issues pertaining to ecological conservation, health and safety have not been fully reconciled with traditional printmaking practices. Due largely to industrial health and safety legislation, educational institutions have reevaluated the manner in which art students and staff work with dangerous chemicals and solvents used in printmaking. How We Have Dealt with the Toxic Chemicals and Acids from Traditional Printmaking Responsible institutions dealt with the problem of liquid and airborne toxins by instigating controlled working methods, and exhausting dangerous airborne chemicals from the classroom or art studio. Irresponsible institutions simply ignored the potentially disastrous ecological and occupational health and safety consequences related to traditional printmaking media and blindly continued as the tradition demanded. Due to the potential legal ramifications, the final 'popular' alternative for dealing with the toxicological consequences of traditional printmaking was to eradicate printmaking from fine art curriculums. Every month I hear about printmaking programs shutting down because of concerns related to occupational health and safety. Despite all that has happened, some printmakers still put their jobs, their own health, and their student's health at risk on a daily basis hoping that the consequences of their actions will go unnoticed.
