K-State Department of Psychology: General Information
Welcome to the Department of Psychology at Kansas State University Kansas State University 492 Bluemont Hall Manhattan, Kansas 66506-5302 Phone: (785) 532-6850 Fax: (785) 532-5401 E-mail: psych@ksu.edu The Department of Psychology at Kansas State University provides educational and research opportunities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. At the undergraduate level, the department provides introductory service courses for a large portion of the total undergraduate student population. Our undergraduate majors typically follow one of three tracks: some students plan ultimately to attend graduate school in psychology; other students desire an undergraduate program that will lead to a job specifically in a particular area (e.g., an entry level counseling or clinical position); while other students simply want to obtain a Bachelor's degree and enter the workforce. In each case, the curriculum in the Psychology major is purposely flexible to accommodate these paths. The Psychology Department also has a strong graduate program consisting of four major areas of concentration: Industrial/Organizational, Social/Personality, Cognitive and Human Factors, and Animal Learning/Behavioral Neuroscience. In general, graduate students are accepted as potential Ph.D. candidates although the department does have a distance

Jung writes of two kinds of thinking. The first kind is linear, learned, goal-oriented, directed and the kind of thinking we strive for in our consciousness. The second kind of thinking is circular; often disorienting and confusing to consciousness, not directed by consciousness; more given over to play and fantasy, and is the very basis of creativity. This second kind of thinking relies on symbol and image a good deal while the first kind finds itself more at home with words and thought. Symbolic thinking, however, can be acquired and can greatly enrich our normal, more linear, word-based consciousness. Following are some helpful ideas about symbols from C.G. Jung and Paul Tillich: Jung, in Man and His Symbols , pp. 20-27, writes: A symbol “implies something vague, unknown or hidden from us.” . . . “Thus a word or an image is symbolic when it implies something more than its obvious and immediate meaning. It has a wider ‘unconscious’ aspect that is never precisely defined or fully explained. Nor can one hope to define or explain it. As the mind explores the symbol, it is led to ideas that lie beyond the grasp of reason.” “Because there are innumerable things beyond the range of human understanding, we constantly use symbolic terms to represent concepts that we cannot define or fully comprehend.”

Graduate Study in Psychology
General Advice
  • Is graduate school really for you? This is the most important question to ask yourself as you are thinking about applying. Graduate school is a time-consuming and expensive commitment. Make sure you talk to a lot of people and do a lot of internet research so that you know what you're getting into before you decide to apply. Graduate school can be extremely rewarding, but only if you are passionately interested in whatever it is that you are interested in studying.
  • Are there any absolute rules that you can follow to ensure that you are admitted? No. No matter what your qualifications are, it is impossible to predict with absolute certainty whether you will be admitted to certain programs or not. Obviously, better students will get more acceptance letters than poor students, but factors outside of your control are going to play a big part in where you are admitted. So keep in mind that the rest of the advice on this page includes general guidelinesthere are no guarantees.
  • What are the most important strengths that an applicant can have?

This guide provides a broad set of bibliographical and Internet-based resources for use in the study of narrative psychology and has been designed both as an Internet-available document for researchers generally and partially to be used within an advanced undergraduate psychology seminar.
For the past decade and a half, psychologists have been turning toward the notion of narrative with clearly accelerating intensity in order to establish a new "paradigm" or "root metaphor" (as Theodore Sarbin [1986] terms it) for the scholarly discipline of psychology. They have examined other fields of scholarship to borrow or adapt concepts and notions about narrative and stand indebted to literary theorists, philosophers, historians, theologians, anthropologists, sociologists, and scholars of women's, gay/lesbian, and ethnic studies for a great deal of the foundation upon which narrative perspective in psychology is being built.

    General Information
Oldest Continuous Psychological Laboratory in America
Indiana University is the location of the oldest continuing psychology laboratory in America. William Lowe Bryan , a future president of the American Psychological Association (1903) and Indiana University (1902- 1937), opened the laboratory in January of 1888. A student of Hermann Ebbinghaus and G. Stanley Hall, Bryan did his initial work on the relation between reaction time and intensity of stimulation, as well as on the development of voluntary motor ability in children. However, he is most famous for his classic experiments on human Morse Code learning. Those studies revealed "plateaus" (definite periods of no improvement) in learning curves and suggested that acquisition of a complicated skill involves successive mastery of a hierarchy of habits. The project was one of the first to provide data on the role of automaticity in human learning and memory, a hot topic in contemporary cognitive psychology. Bryan's studies were the impetus for the strong experimental emphasis that has characterized psychology at Indiana up to the present day. The reputation of the department is based more on traditions of broad empirical investigation than sponsorship of any definite school of psychological thought even though leading thinkers like
