Safe Schools and Successful Learning : There IS an Answer
by Bonnie Benard
Posted with permission from the CYD Journal , Vol.2, No.3, Summer 2001. Meeting young people’s developmental needs for safety, love and belonging, respect, mastery, challenge, power and autonomy, and meaning is a necessity that lies at the heart of all good schooling. While this is just common sense to some, to others, in our age of standards-driven educational reform and get-tough-on-youth social policies, it sounds like a radical notion. In this article Bonnie Benard describes these seven fundamental needs and offers practical suggestions for applying these principles in the classroom. Schools need to teach our kids how much they matter. If they don’t, we will see Santana and Columbine copycat shootings again and again.
—Meredith Maran
These prophetic words, written barely two weeks before the latest school shooting in El Cahon, California, succinctly state the challenge for educators in America: to teach our young people that they matter—that their lives have a purpose and that they can make a difference in creating a better world. It is time to speak loudly and boldly to educators and policymakers alike. There is an answer to preventing the violence that has racked our schools and it lies in the principles and practices of Community Youth Development. Indeed, these same practices and principles are also those associated with students’ academic success. We will never achieve safe schools or high academic standards unless and until we employ the research knowledge we have gained on healthy child and youth development practices, and intentionally focus on the inborn developmental wisdom, the innate resilience, and the intrinsic motivation that drive the CYD process.

Benefits
Technology Access NetParents Netiquette
The Benefits of Using Technology Online Homework - For many parents frustration builds when they have neither the time nor the ability to help their children with homework. Using technology at home can help overcome this common problem. An example of such usage is Study-Help - a forum for assistance with subjects such as Math and English for parents and students. Multimedia References - Technology can make life easier and more interesting with regards to research. A good example is the transformation of the traditional encyclopedia into a CD-ROM that includes audio, video, 3D and interactive activities, and very impressive search capabilities. Parents-Teachers Telecommunication - Imagine logging onto the Internet and having your children's schedule, grade progress, daily attendance record and homework assignments available with a click of a mouse. That scenario could be coming to a school near you and you could help make it happen. "Education Dashboard" is software that links parents and schools, allowing parents to use home telecommunication to monitor their children's grades, correspond with teachers or participate in school related chats.

Modern communication tools are more complex than ever, but parent groups are finding that school signs still send a strong message.

By Ellen Ishkanian No matter how many notes Principal Kathy Maserve sent home with students at the Pine Valley Elementary School at the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, she knew there were parents who would never get her messages. She even instituted a special message day, stuffing backpacks with newsletters only on Tuesdays, hoping parents would become accustomed to expecting a note from the principal on that day. Still, her phone would ring with frustrated parents who missed event after event. “The notices never made it out of the backpacks,’’ Maserve says. So she went to her school’s PTO and asked members for advice on how to improve communication. The answers were unanimous. The school needed a sign to display messages to parents and the community. After contacting Distinctive Signs in Louisville, Kentucky, and several months of maneuvering through Air Force zoning regulations, the PTO erected a school sign with a changeable message as a gift in honor of Pine Valley’s 40th anniversary. Kathy Maserve’s phone still hasn’t stopped ringing. “But I haven’t gotten one call from a parent complaining about missing an event. I just hear about how great the sign’s been,’’ she says.

Mission
The TeacherLaptop Foundation is a national non-profit organization with a mission of helping teachers obtain their own information technology so that they are better prepared to help students learn with technology. Through generous donations from individuals, corporations, businesses, and other foundations, we can make sure that no child is left behind by making sure that no teacher is left behind The Department of Education has reported that the greatest barrier to effective use of education technology by America’s teachers is lack of time to become comfortable and proficient with technology. The goal of enhancing learning with technology for all students can be achieved when school teachers make information technology a part of their everyday lives. Helping teachers engage their students in utilizing technology for learning insures no child is left behind

One of the more recent programs that the PTA was responsible for was Red Ribbon Week activities at the school. Districts turn to parents to play bigger roles
By TERRY KLIEWER
In this era of swelling enrollments, tight budgets and politicized family values, Americans are being told the key to success in public education can be summed up in one word: parents. Everyone from President Clinton down is urging parents to take a more active role in their children's schooling. The old days when parents met teachers once a year at open house, went to the Halloween carnival and chipped in at candy sale time now seem quaint. Under the new regimen, parents are handing out textbooks, replacing playgrounds, tutoring slow students in reading and helping fast ones pick a college. They help to run student detention programs. They "room-sit" for teachers called away to other things. They meet and greet school visitors. While big school districts may have special staffs to garner commercial and corporate support, smaller districts often turn to parents and volunteers to help identify and go after business and civic donors. Volunteerism in all its forms private-sector support, plus parents' and others' donations of time and effort can add up to substantial sums for cash-strapped school districts.
