Mary Alice Downie (Photo: 1991, Sharon Mulligan) Mary Alice Downie was born in Illinois to Canadian parents and grew up in Toronto. She graduated from the University of Toronto in English, despite spending most of her time at The Varsity. She had the usual range of jobs: steno pool, editorial assistant for a medical journal, and publicity management for a publisher. In 1959 she married John Downie; they moved to Pittsburgh where she produced film, play, and book reviews, and two daughters, Christine and Jocelyn. In 1962, they moved to Kingston, Alexandra was born in 1967. She hopes to continue writing and editing in a 103-year-old house in Kingston and 107-year-old cottage on an island on the Rideau, and to travel to as many places as possible. Jan Andrews Jan Andrews writes for children and young adults because it is their stories which come into her head. She is also a traditional storyteller, with a passion for epic and myth. She has told portions of The Iliad and The Odyssey and believes these tellings inform her work. Fall 2001 Volume 16 Number 4 LET’S BEGIN When Is a Human Being a Human Being? The embryonic stem (ES) cell research debate has as its epicenter one fundamental question: When does the physical dimension of a human being begin via sexual reproduction? This is the correct question to ask to lay a foundation for a discussion about ES cell research because this research deals with biology and beginnings; that is, the biological beginnings of human beings. And the answer to this question is based on the science of biology, not philosophy or politics, or ethics or moral values. Other questions and answers from these other arenas properly spring from the scientific answer to this first question; but they should not be tossed into the fray beforehand to muddle our thinking. We know this question of when a human being begins can be answered only by science because science is the objective study of the material world we inhabit, and together we biomedical communicators can use this academic discipline to identify the beginning of the physical biological aspect of a human being. We can confidently (and gladly) leave the Hollywood activists and politicians and talk show bobble-head dolls behind. In science, there is no mystery surrounding this subject; information is freely available in human embryology textbooks and on reputable academic or scientific Web sites. (Here, because of space limitations, the complex processes are much abbreviated.) So. How does science answer the question: When does the physical dimension of a human being begin? Let’s consider what human embryologists know. It will help to define along the way some basic human embryology terms, including “gametogenesis,” “oogenesis,” “spermatogenesis,” “fertilization,” “zygote,” and “embryo.” Controversial or misleading terms such as “pre-embryo” and “fertilized egg” are also addressed.
