If supervisors offered them focused advice on how to prepare material for publication, not only research students, but editors and assessors too, would be less often disappointed. Real writers write because they must, not because someone else (even their supervisor) tells them to, or rewards them with jobs and promotions for doing it. The wish to see your work in print must come from you, in the first instance. Writing for publication is hard work, it takes patience, persistence, and humility. In my opinion it is one of the most exhilarating feelings, when you at long last get to type those two little words: THE END. I promise, you will have many, many emotions as you begin this journey, but none will compare to that small little action. So, what now? You consider this baby perfect. No, beyond that ... BEST SELLER material! We all do, especially with our first, but I can guarantee, no matter how wonderful a writer you are, it is far from perfect. You will be amazed by the things that will jump out at you, after a little time away from it. Set it aside, take a much deserved vacation, and then come back to it with fresh eyes. Pick it up and read it from front to back as if it were not your own. Then begin editing. Personally, I have a thing for flow. If I read a sentence and it doesn't flow like poetry, or feel like it is speaking to me, I want to delete it. I can't always do this, but most of the time I change it. Look for subtle things that might confuse the reader: names too similar, too many points of view (very, very confusing), and loose ends that you missed when tying it all together. Did you some how end up with a character falling of the face of the earth, nowhere to be seen from chapter 12 to finish? Well, find him! Last but not least, spell check and spell check again. We want to look professional! Spelling is one of my biggest weaknesses. If I am not misspelling, I am making typos. My most common is reversing the letters in the word "to". Ugggg! We might laugh at it when we see it, but believe me: The editors will not find it endearing all.
