millennial notes on getting published in america the few
by gregory farnum printer friendly version One surefire way of getting published in early 21st century America is to go to college and study English, work your way through a master'spreferably an MFAdegree, adapt and adopt your writing to fit the tastes and preconceptions of an influential faculty member, get that faculty member to recommend you to his publisher or agent, prevail upon your faculty patron to write a positive review of your book when it appears, and be prepared to render services in return when called upon. This is a process known either as apprenticeship or as sucking up. Many fine people have built careers this way. Most of us have met some of them, perhaps as teachers whom we've admired, or perhaps we've met them through the pages of their books. This doesn't change the fact that there is something very curious, very ossified about such a system.

July 2002 GETTING PUBLISHED PART 1: PROCESS OVERVIEW At one of the sessions at the past E3, during the question and answer portion, an audience member told the panelists he was developing a game and he wanted to know how he could go about getting it published. He said his company’s plan was to completely finish the game before showing it to publishers. The panelists’ response was unanimous: "This isn’t the right session for that question." On a regular basis, GIGnews receive emails from developers who are desperately seeking funding and publishing deals. They want publicity. They want advice. Does anyone know anyone who can help? Anyone? At all? The topic of how developers go about getting published is an involved one and, apparently for many, an elusive one. Rather than trying to cover it all in one article, GIGnews has decided to begin an ongoing exploration of the topic, beginning this with an initial overview. Setting the scene

No! The above scenario my not be very far from the truth in many start-up development teams. But it is full of problems that could make it impossible to get the game to the public. (This article deals with the first two issues below. The rest will be addressed in future installments). The following questions come to mind (Remember - This is a Lawyer’s mind. So, don’t try this at home!) What legal entity will the publisher deal with? Who on the team gets what if the team succeeds? Who owns the assets in the game? Are there any problems with the assets that would prevent the game from being taken to market? So, here are some basics that will give you an idea of the things you should take care of on the front end so they don’t become a hassle initially, or much worse, later in the process. The first is the formation of a legal entity your company! BUSINESS MODELS Please don’t be offended, but game development is a business. If you want to treat games as "art" then make them for their own sake and give them away. Maybe, in the tradition of great artists, your true genius will be recognized

Okay, so maybe you aren't a "complete idiot." But if the publishing industry's mysterious ways leave you feeling fairly ignorant, this easy-to-read volume (hey, it's written for idiots) can turn you into a competent insider in no time. If The Complete Idiot's Guide to Getting Published were reduced to one sentence, it would read: The book business is a businessso be businesslike. Don't send a query letter on pink stationery. Don't stalk your editor. Don't bribe the sales reps. That's obvious, but there's more. Between them Sheree Bykofsky and Jennifer Basye Sander have sold, publicized, written, packaged, acquired, edited, agented, and published books. They know whence they speak, and they freely impart their well-earned knowledge here. The first step to being businesslike is learning the business. While Bykofsky and Sander include the usual stuff about query letters, book proposals, agents, and contracts, they also offer assistance on settling on a subject, information on how manuscripts become books and how books get into stores, and advice on keeping your book in the stores once it gets there. They augment their own publishing wisdom with that of their colleagues...

http://www.mja.com.au/public/bookroom/1999/maddern/maddern.html
Tips on getting published
Publishing your medical research paper. What they don't teach in medical school. This book has been written for the clinician rather than the statistician and attempts to present technical information to assist in getting a medical research paper published. The content is most thorough and the important steps are laid out in order: planning, observing, writing, editing and revising. The points covered are comprehensive and the style is direct. The more important points are highlighted, which certainly enables a quick overview of the issues. There are, however, some deficiencies. The description and explanation of non-parametric statistics is insufficient, especially as it is common to have a clinical study population that is not normally distributed. The usefulness of non-parametric statistical tests could have been given much greater emphasis. The book could have been substantially shorter, a lot more readable, and with better graphics. Indeed, for a book that purports to provide guidance on how to present data, interpret data and lay out a manuscript, it brings into question the author's own ability to perform such a task! Nonetheless, it is a relatively inexpensive text and would probably be of use in medical academic hospital departments to guide the novice and reassure the experienced contributor. Guy J Maddern

http://www.upstyle.co.uk/self-pub.html
Self-Publishing The way books are being published has changed forever. More than ever, many publishers are only interested in 'big-names' and as such it is very difficult for an unknown to get published. If you are an author in such a situation then fortunately it is easier than ever to publish your own work. What is Self-Publishing? Firstly, it is important to note that self-publishing is not 'vanity' or 'subsidy' publishing, whereby the would-be author is fooled into believing that he or she is getting published by an established publisher, but is 'contributing' to the cost to make it financially viable. (In nearly all cases the author is paying the entire production cost in addition to a healthy profit for the publisher). Needless to say the publisher will have little interest in selling the book, as they will already have made their profit out of the project. Before explaining how self-publishing can help you, it probably is best to understand the concepts behind traditional publishing. Once you have an idea of how this takes place, you will understand where the world of self-publishing fits in. Obviously, traditional publishing is not dead-and-buried. Most authors will have their books produced in this manner. However, once pretty much the only method of getting published (vanity/subsidy publishing aside) a cost-effective alternative now exists that will not only get the author into the world of having a published book, but in many cases will also lead to the author gaining more financially out of the production than would normally be the case.

Articles Home Job Resources Articles Writer's FAQ ... Beginners 20 VALUABLE TIPS TO GETTING PUBLISHED © 2000 James Russell Publishing Despite the fact there are many books for authors on how to submit manuscripts to publishers and agents, a condensed primer of good advice is needed. Here are some valuable tips to help you get your book published. You must have a "completed" manuscript ready for publication. If all you have is a great idea for a book and no product to sell you are wasting time and effort. Few publishers will accept such submissions from unknown writers. Best advice? Write the book then submit the manuscript to publishers and agents. Send the manuscript in separate unbound sheets, unless otherwise instructed. However, if you are an experienced writer, you may submit a book "proposal." Read books similar to what you plan to write so you have an idea of how the writer communicated the subject matter. You could likely do better. That's what you'll have to do in order to compete with other books much like yours in the marketplace! Read about the publishing industry. Learn how it functions. Read publishing law books. Publishing contracts are complex and intimidating to the new writer. Be prepared so you can act quickly if a publisher decides to publish your book. Publishers will not wait long for you to evaluate the contract due to ever changing market conditions. You could lose a publishing opportunity by not being prepared. Do not mention the word “proposal” in a query letter unless it is a book proposal. Novice writers often write, “I propose to send my manuscript to your firm…” and the publisher thinks the query is a proposal and not a finished manuscript leading to a rejection for the unknown author.

Suggestions for Publishing Support
Introduction
As a potential author, you may have an idea that you think is unique or provides new insight on something that you've read or seen. But you may be leery of trying to put your idea into print because you're afraid you won't be able to find the time or support you need to produce a publication. Many good ideas are never shared because many potential authors are not aware of the resources available to them. It is the sharing of ideas that will enhance the practice and the profession of medical librarianship that is the essence of the publications program of the Medical Library Association The following list of resource suggestions is designed to help potential authors identify and obtain the necessary financial and practical support they need to begin to transform their ideas into publications. People Who Can Help You Types of tasks that could be performed by others:
  • Surveying the literature for publications on your topic Obtaining copies of publications thus identified Organizing the bibliography Writing letters requesting information and thanking respondents Typing letters, drafts, final copy; entering and tabulating data; generating art, graphs, and tables
