Puerto Rico . . . Its Land, History, Culture, and Literature
by
Frank J. Gallucci
Contents of Curriculum Unit 87.01.04:
To Guide Entry
The purpose of this unit is to illustrate the interdiscipline of geography and culture, of history and literature. The geography of the land initiates the evolution of a culture. As different cultures are intertwined with the original, the culture becomes more complex. As an island which combines Indian, Black, and White cultures, Puerto Rico provides an interesting case in point. This unit begins with an introduction to Puerto Rican geography, history, and culture and then focuses on its literature. This unit is designed for middle school students in a social studies classroom. But it could be adapted and used in other settings.
Geography
The distribution of individuals on the island is patterned by the geographic features, with the coast being more populated than the interior. Anthropological papers have shown the biological and physiological differences stemming from environmental sources.
History
On November 19, 1493, Columbus, on his second voyage, found the island of San Juan Bautista (Puerto Rico). A permanent foothold was established in 1508 by Juan Ponce de Leon, when he founded the town of Caparra not far from the present capital of San Juan. Eventually all the Indians on the island were defeated in battle and subjugated. Badly mistreated by the Spaniards, they died out as a labor force and the role of the Indian was taken over by the African slaves. In time this port city evolved into what is now San Juan and the island Puerto Rico. As the Spanish empire grew, Puerto Rico’s strategic location over shadowed its economic significance. It was thought of by the crown officials as the strongest foothold of Spain in America.

I f you are the owner of a fine piece of art that’s rapidly deteriorating and in need of an art conservation professional, contact the museums in your area for guidelines instead of answering the first ad you find in your local newspaper.
As you may know, conservation and preservation of artwork takes time and expertise, so be very careful with anyone who promises quick service. Speak with several conservators, and recognize that not all professionals in this field will agree with certain treatment options.
Before engaging in the services, your artwork should be examined prior to any work being done. The conservator should present a written preliminary report, which explains the proposed treatment, expected results, and estimated costs. Ask about insurance, payment terms, and any additional fees.

Puerto Rico's Culture
Puerto Rico was known as Boriquen to the indigenous Arawak Indians who had settled the Greater Antilles. When Europeans first settled the island in 1508, the prosperity of the Arawaks prompted the notion that here indeed was a "rich port". Imported diseases soon decimated the Arawak population. Deprived of laborers for their gold mines and due to lower crop yields, the European settlers abandoned their mines and plantations. A few colonists, administrators, and merchants remained in San Juan and Ponce, while most of the nearby interior was turned into grazing land for cattle and subsistence farming. Puerto Rico remained a Spanish colony for the next three centuries, but it never matched the prosperity of its neighbors. Slavery brought the African presence to Puerto Rico in the 18 th and 19 th centuries, and there was a rebirth of European influences. Immigration movements first brought Viscayans, then Catalonians, and finally Asturians, Gallegos, and Majorcans from Spain. A network of new colonial towns developed around the coastal plains. Thriving on sugar and coffee production, Puerto Rico prospered. Spanish loyalists from South America and the Caribbean as well as French planters from Haiti who where fleeing the revolutionary movements and bloodshed found refuge in Puerto Rico. It was in the 19

  • ED does not have a central place where it consolidates and houses information on all of the University's campuses. Too often, the school has to provide ED information that had previously been requested. In addition, the school has to frequently explain to ED its administrative/organizational structure.
  • On SSCR processing, old OPE ID codes are still active along with the new ones. Two sets of SSCR reports are being generated. Records reported under the old OPE ID are not consolidated into the SSCR report with the new OPE ID.
  • Procedures for resetting a password for Title IV WAN/NSLDS processing need to be either revised and/or need to be consistent. Some schools experience great difficulties and other do not. Some schools have been able to reset or change a password over the phone while other schools have been requested to send a new participation agreement.
  • Requesting a new Program Participation Agreement when no changes have taken place is unnecessary.

  • There isn't enough information on how to process and apply for Pell.
  • The students have difficulty in filling out the FAFSA application.
  • Sometimes the students receive information in Spanish that is inaccurate or difficult to understand due to poor translations.
  • After the students apply for Pell (information usually provided in poor Spanish language), the information that they receive back from the Department is in English. Many students don't understand English and they don't pay attention to the answer(s) provided in the form and always assume that the Pell has been granted.
  • If a Pell is denied, there is very little information as to what other options the students have to further their education. This is very critical because many students in Puerto Rico don't continue their education; they don't seek any other alternatives.
  • The students have very little knowledge about how to apply for student loans. They have very little knowledge of where to even begin to look to get this information.
  • During High School, many students complained about not having received any information on college education. It was provided only when they asked.

A brief description of Puerto Rico's relationship to the U.S.
This article sponsored by: DogToys.com - Celebrating 35 dog years online!
DogToys.com does it best as the web's first online pet supply store it celebrates 5 years serving the Internet shopper. Recently a guy I work with took a trip to Puerto Rico. As he was recounting his adventures for the twentieth time, the girl he was talking to (and flirting madly with) asked, “Is that a foreign country?” “Well, I don’t know,” he answered. “I didn’t need a passport, but I had to go through customs. I don’t think it’s a state, but they use American money there. I just don’t know.” I'm always surprised at the number of people I encounter who don’t know how Puerto Rico is a related to the United States. Then there are many people who know that Puerto Rico is a commonwealth, but aren’t quite sure what that means. Here’s a quick rundown. At the end of the Spanish-American War in 1898, Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States of America, and in 1917 President Woodrow Wilson passed a law giving Puerto Ricans US citizenship.

Puerto Rico's Foods and Recipes
Puerto Rico has a rich source of foods cultivated in its tropical hillsides. In these rural areas, the majority of the traditional recipes were born and are still perpetuated, even though most of the cooking methods of times past have been replaced by modern techniques. The wide variety of fruits and vegetables growing on our fertile soil ensure that our meals are never boring. During the year, Puerto Rico's mountain towns celebrate festivals related to some of the foods grown, and to other traditional and cultural facets of the Puerto Rican society. Whatever the theme, there's always an encounter with the culinary delights found in our distinctive cookery. We especially want to share this part of the Puerto Rican culture with both the second-generation Boricuas and the tourist travelers. When you make plans to visit Puerto Rico, reserve a few extra days to go to the countryside, " el campo ". As you travel the back roads, stop and savor the local dishes and the fruits in season. Discover how and why our cocina criolla - home cooking - is so flavorful and unique. ¡Bienvenidos a Mi Caminito!
