Faculty Graduate Study in Cultural Anthropology at Rutgers University The Program Cultural anthropologists in the Department of Anthropology offer ethnographic expertise in several world regions, including Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. They combine this with theoretical strengths in the translocal theory that now transcends formerly rigid boundaries of regional specialization. Two important orientations are characteristic the blending of cultural analysis with the analysis of political economy, and the fusing of transnational and global theory with local-level research. Aspects of gender, sexuality and bodies, as well as race, ethnicity, and the nation-state are central for most cultural anthropologists on the faculty. Moreover, our cultural faculty engage and challenge the long history of theories of culture in various sub-disciplines. Approaches range from the historical and comparative to the interpretive, and combine rigorous often multi-sited field research with media analysis, archival work, and linguistic research. Specific research interests include the cultural politics of development in China, Nepal, Kenya, and Tanzania; the cultural construction of the modern nation-state in Africa, China and Europe; ethno-racial constructions of sovereignty under globalization in Germany; transnationalism among South and Southeast Asian diasporic communities; kinship; religion; and agency. In 1873, when Congress transferred territorial oversight from the Secretary of State to the Secretary of the Interior, the governance of some 1,629,000 square miles became a department responsibility. By then the United States had reached its present continental dimensions encompassing nearly 3,611,000 square miles, so that the territories covered about 45 percent of the national domain. From them were formed the states of Colorado in 1876; Montana, Washington, and North and South Dakota in 1889; Wyoming and Idaho in 1890; Utah in 1896; Oklahoma in 1907; Arizona and New Mexico in 1912; and Alaska in 1959. In 1898 the United States acquired its first insular possessions, annexing the Hawaiian Islands and obtaining Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines from Spain following the Spanish-American War. America's Pacific presence was extended a year later with the addition of several of the Samoan Islands. Only Hawaii came under Interior at the outset; the State Department took primary responsibility for Puerto Rico, the War Department supervised the Philippines, and the Navy Department oversaw Guam and American Samoa. When the United States purchased the Virgin Islands from Denmark in 1917, the Navy also took charge of that Caribbean possession.

Wetlands Watershed Protection What is a Watershed? A watershed is the area of land from which rainfall (and/or) snow melt) drains into a stream or other water body. The highest ground, such as a mountain, hill or ridge, forms the boundary between two watersheds. At these boundaries, rain falling on one side flows toward the low point of one watershed, while rain falling on the other side of the boundary flows toward the low point of a different watershed. Individual watersheds combine to form larger watersheds, which are sometimes called basins. The quality of water in a watershed is affected by every source of pollution in that watershed. What is the Watershed Approach? The watershed protection approach is an integrated, holistic strategy for more effectively restoring and protecting aquatic resources. This approach focuses on hydrologically defined drainage basins, or watersheds, rather than on areas arbitrarily defined by political boundaries. Thus for a given watershed, the approach encompasses not only the water resource, such as a stream, river, lake, estuary or aquifer, but all the land from which water drains to the resource. To protect water resources, it is increasingly important to address the condition of land areas within the watershed because as water drains off the land or leaches to the ground water it carries with it the effects of human activities throughout the watershed.
