Introduction
Our newsletter Why subscribe? Main sections The unique Web Outreach sites Communicating Effective writing ... Mission outreach This house-style guide was produced by a UK Christian printing ministry for writers of books and magazines and is used by permission. It also aims to be international in scope. You can also download a secular US style-guide from Zeal.com Two primary style guides in US are Chicago Manual of Style for writers of books and most publications and the AP Style Guide for journalists. William Strunk's class The Elementsof Style is not a style guide in this sense, but rather a guide to clear writing. Where suggested web usage varies from print, we have pointed this out with a red 'Web Comment'. You may wish to print it out. Setting your font sizes within your browser to smallest size will save paper. Alternatively, save this page on your hard-disk, or bookmark it.
Regional variations
Recommended English grammar is virtually the same throughout the English-speaking world. However other writing conventions vary, even within the same country. So there is no single 'right' way. It is more important that you are consistent and use a style which is widely acceptable and attractive.

Students should first consult the particular style and grammar handbook they are using in order to review the particular issue with which an exercise is concerned. There are references throughout these pages to three common handbooks: Guide to the Marking of Written Assignments (Shorter Revised Edition, 1991), The Everday Writer (Canadian Edition, 1997), and The Ready Reference Handbook (Canadian Edition, 1998). This is determined by sound, not spelling ("a history", "an hour", "a unit", "a European", "a one"). Formerly, "an" was usual before unaccented syllables beginning with "h" ("an historian", "an hotel"); these are "now obsolescent" in British English (Collins English Dictionary), although "an historian" is retained in more dialects than "an hotel". Before abbreviations, the choice of "a"/"an" depends on how the abbreviation is pronounced: "a NATO spokesman" (because "NATO" is pronounced /'neItoU/ or "nay-toh") "an NBC spokesman" (because "NBC" is pronounced /Enbi:'si:/ or "en-bee-see") "a NY spokesman" (because "NY" is read as "New York"). The Web: What's Proper?
By Amy Gahran Most of us were educated to believe that there is one "correct" (and fairly formal) version of English grammar and punctuation, and any deviation from that is mere sloppiness. Not true! The whole point of grammar and punctuation is to enhance understanding The way we understand information depends, in large measure, upon how we get
What's unique about the Web
These considerations can help guide grammar and punctuation choices in your Web writing:
  • It's not print.
  • Text and images (both visual vehicles) are the primary ways to transmit messages on the Web. Unfortunately, today's computer screens remain a difficult visual environment (resolution, flicker, lighting, etc.). Most English punctuation marks are small, so as not to unduly interrupt the flow of letters on a printed page. However, on a computer screen, commas, periods, semicolons, colons, apostrophes, and many other common punctuation marks can be hard to see. On the Web, less punctuation (and bigger punctuation marks) is usually better. This is why the em-dash More white space on a Web page makes it easier to discern individual visual elements, like words and punctuation. Short paragraphs provide more white space, and also clearly differentiate points of discussion. Short, simple sentences are faster to read and typically require less punctuation.

In the Writing Center we field a lot of questions about punctuation, and we see a lot of punctuation problems. Most writers, even professional writers, feel uncertain about proper punctuation on occasion. We expect punctuation to be governed by rules, but taste, style, and even breathing patterns also have influence. Punctuation practice is rooted in oral language. Oral face-to-face speech is a multimodal, multichannel event that encodes a lot of redundant information. In addition to speaking words embedded in grammatical structures, we vary the intensity of our speech; we pause for effect; we modulate the intonation, making the voice rise and fall; and we use physical gestures, body language, and facial expressions. In a telephone conversation we are no longer in a face-to-face situation, and we lose the visual channels. Generally, we compensate well by attending more closely to words, intonation and syntax, and the design of the telephone tends to help us focus on these things. A Significant Disadvantage
However, in a speakerphone conference in which some of the participants are physically present to one another while another only has access to aural information, the latter party may feel that he or she is at a significant disadvantage. And when the two parties to a telephone conversation have different cultural backgrounds, or when one party doesn't speak the language of the conversation well, we feel the need of information from the missing channels to confirm our interpretations.

Tips for Grammar and Punctuation
Comma Apostrophes Quotation Marks Indicating Possession ... Third Person Of all the punctuation marks we have, misuse of the comma creates the majority of the awful sentences out there. Comma use is not really instinctive. You don't put commas in sentences where people actually pause, or take a breath when they speak. Commas tell the reader how to read the sentence. They indicate how the sentence is put together. Commas warn readers about separate parts of sentences and slight shifts in thought. Commas help form series, dates, and addresses, and allow sentences to make use of additional information. Consequently, the Number One Rule for Commas is: Put commas in sentences when and where it will help your reader to understand your sentence. Phrases are often used to add information to a sentence. In fact, that's their primary function. All information in a sentence can be described one of two ways: ·  Restrictive meaning it's vital, identifying information

Relief for Beginners

I'm just beginning to teach a freshman writing course at a local college for the first time. Although I have a master's degree in English, I should confess that I've used grammar by "feel." That is to say, I didn't know the rules, but I have read a lot, and I just wrote by instinct. I'm not defending this approach, just explaining! So now I'm faced with the necessity of teaching grammar to my freshmen students. Alas! After a couple of embarrassing and week lectures, I went to the bookstore to get help. I spent about four hours looking for grammar books I could stand to read myself, and that would help me learn enough to teach my students. Most of the books were very technical and overly-detailed for me, and surely for my students as well. However, I found this book, along with a couple of others that were truly a relief in their clarity, fun approach, and pared down lessons. So, for anyone else who's just starting out studying grammar, I highly recommend this book. It's simple, relevant, understandable, and whimsical. It's not scary, too technical, and too much information. I don't think you'll be disappointed, unless you really WANT to learn every detail.

Alert: Proofread carefully. The reader can read only the form you present on the page to understand what you mean. When you leave typos, misspelled words, and serious sentence errors in your paper, you give the impression that you might expect the reader to "read between the lines." In academic writing, the goal is just the opposite: you want to be as clear, as precise, and as exacting as you are able. Write to minimize the possibility that the reader could misunderstand your thought. Edit carefully: Proofread thoroughly for errors like those listed here. Reread what you have written. Read your paper aloud to someone else. If you read a sentence and have to read it again to understand it, edit the sentence so it is clear the first time through.

This web page discusses how to teach grammar, punctuation, and usage to students in a laboratory or design course. Following the rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage is important for students when writing professional documents. Failure to do so can cause a student to lose credibility with the audience even though the technical content of the document may be sound. A dilemma exists for instructors in regards to teaching grammar, punctuation, and usage. On the one hand, students should know those rules when entering a laboratory or design course (and many of the students, in fact, do know the rules). Moreover, class time has to be spent on other issues that the students have not had the opportunity to learn. On the other hand, many students do not know the rules and risk hurting their professional reputations. The question becomes then, How can an instructor ensure that the students know the rules without devoting valuable class time to the subject? In a large design course at Virginia Tech (Microprocessor Design, which has more than 200 students per semester), we have come upon a way to have the students review the rules of grammar, punctuation, and usage without spending class time on the topic. The way that we do so is through a
