Tutorial 17:
Quadratic Equations
Learning Objectives

After completing this tutorial, you should be able to:
  • Solve quadratic equations by factoring. Solve quadratic equations by the square root method. Solve quadratic equations by completing the square. Solve quadratic equations by using the quadratic formula. Find the discriminant of a quadratic equation and use it to tell how many and what type of solutions the equation has.

  • Introduction
In this tutorial, we will be looking at solving a specific type of equation called the quadratic equation. The methods of solving these types of equations that we will take a look at are solving by factoring, by using the square root method, by completing the square, and by using the quadratic equation. Sometimes one method won't work or another is just faster, depending on the quadratic equation given. So it is good to know different ways to solve quadratic equations so you will be prepared for any type of situation. After completing this tutorial, you will be a master at solving quadratic equations. Solving equations in general is a very essential part of Algebra. So I guess we better get to it.

    Tutorial 20:
Equations that are Quadratic in Form
    Learning Objectives

After completing this tutorial, you should be able to:
  • Solve equations that are quadratic in form.

  • Introduction
In this tutorial I will be stepping you through how to solve equations that are quadratic in form. These types of equations ultimately lead us to a quadratic equation. So you know what that means. As mentioned in previous tutorials, a lot of times in math you use previous knowledge to help work the new concepts. The main thing you need to know from your past that will help you work the types of problems in this tutorial is how to solve quadratic equations. If you need a review on solving quadratic equations, feel free to go to Tutorial 17: Quadratic Equations . Solving equations is a big part of algebra. It is very important to be able to solve all different kinds of equations because equations can be used to solve all kinds of problems, and you want to make sure you are prepared for any type of problem that comes your way. I think that you are ready to move forward.

Quadratic Equations - By Elaine Pitcher
    How to use this applet:
The user writes a, b and c values into the textfields. They then press the "calculate roots" button and the roots are given.
If they then press the "try again" button, they are given a chance to do it again.
Notes on the maths used in the applet:
The roots of a quadratic equation (x1, x2), can be plotted on a graph. Negative quadratic equations (i.e -ax2 +bx +c = 0) gives a concave up curve and a positive equation gives a concave down curve.
The applet uses the formula for calcualting roots to get the x values and prints these on the screen.

    • Miscellaneous Quadratic Equations Solved by Factoring.
This segment covers a variety of equations, involving various previously studied algebraic expressions, which are reducible to quadratic equations which can then be solved by factoring. This segment also covers the method of solving equations by substituting new symbols for expressions which appear repeatedly in the same equation.
    • Solving Quadratic Equations by Completing the Square.
This segment covers the solution of quadratic equations in which the unknowns can be collected into a single term which is the square of a binomial and then are solvable directly by roots. The technique of completing the square is covered to show that the preceding form can always be obtained.
    • Solving Quadratic Equations by the Quadratic Formula.
This segment covers the quadratic formula and its use in solving quadratic equations. This segment also covers the rearrangement of any quadratic into standard form to facilitate identification of appropriate coefficients as to their proper place in the quadratic formula for computation of solutions.

It is often claimed that the Babylonians (about 400 BC) were the first to solve quadratic equations. This is an over simplification, for the Babylonians had no notion of 'equation'. What they did develop was an algorithmic approach to solving problems which, in our terminology, would give rise to a quadratic equation. The method is essentially one of completing the square. However all Babylonian problems had answers which were positive (more accurately unsigned) quantities since the usual answer was a length. In about 300 BC Euclid developed a geometrical approach which, although later mathematicians used it to solve quadratic equations, amounted to finding a length which in our notation was the root of a quadratic equation. Euclid had no notion of equation, coefficients etc. but worked with purely geometrical quantities. Hindu mathematicians took the Babylonian methods further so that Brahmagupta (598-665 AD) gives an, almost modern, method which admits negative quantities. He also used abbreviations for the unknown, usually the initial letter of a colour was used, and sometimes several different unknowns occur in a single problem. The Arabs did not know about the advances of the Hindus so they had neither negative quantities nor abbreviations for their unknowns. However
