Chapter 10 - Quadratic Equations, Functions, and Inequalities
After a review of the methods of factoring studied in earlier chapters, the method of completing the square is discussed, and then applied to derive the quadratic formula. You will be taught to use the quadratic formula to solve quadratic equations, and to determine the number and nature of solutions by examining the discriminant. An overview of graphing quadratic functions is then presented, with discussion of the vertex and intercepts. Additional topics are then covered, such as using the discriminant in factoring, writing a quadratic with any given solution, and solving various types of equations that are quadratic in form. Finally, you will learn to solve quadratic and rational inequalities with a sign graph.

    Symbolic reasoning and calculations with symbols are central in algebra. Through the study of algebra, a student develops an understanding of the symbolic language of mathematics and the sciences. In addition, algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety of problem-solving situations.     This discipline complements and expands the mathematical content and concepts of algebra I and geometry. Students who master algebra II will gain experience with algebraic solutions of problems in various content areas, including the solution of systems of quadratic equations, logarithmic and exponential functions, the binomial theorem, and the complex number system. In his work Arithmetica , the Greek mathematician Diophantus (ca. 210-290) solved the quadratic equation, but giving only one root, even when both roots were positive (Smith 1951, p. 134). A number of Indian mathematicians gave rules equivalent to the quadratic formula. It is possible that certain altar constructions dating from ca. 500 BC represent solutions of the equation, but even should this be the case, there is no record of the method of solution (Smith 1953, p. 444).
