    Intro to Quantum Mechanics Sigh
So please read on, and take a dip in an ocean of information that I find completely invigorating!
If the above picture is your idea of an atom, with electrons looping around the nucleus, you are about 70 years out of date. It's time to open your eyes to the modern world of quantum mechanics! The picture below shows some plots of where you would most likely find an electron in a hydrogen atom (the nucleus is at the center of each plot). What is quantum mechanics? Simply put, quantum mechanics is the study of matter and radiation at an atomic level. Why was quantum mechanics developed? In the early 20th century some experiments produced results which could not be explained by classical physics (the science developed by Galileo Galilei, Isaac Newton, etc.). For instance, it was well known that electrons orbited the nucleus of an atom. However, if they did so in a manner which resembled the planets orbiting the sun, classical physics predicted that the electrons would spiral in and crash into the nucleus within a fraction of a second. Obviously that doesn't happen, or life as we know it would not exist. (Chemistry depends upon the interaction of the electrons in atoms, and life depends upon chemistry). That incorrect prediction, along with some other experiments that classical physics could not explain, showed scientists that something new was needed to explain science at the atomic level. If classical physics is wrong, why do we still use it?

Interactive Computer Programs The Visual Quantum Mechanics project , funded by the National Science Foundation , involves the development of instructional units that introduce quantum physics to high school and college students who do not have a background in modern physics or higher level math. To reach these students, the instructional units integrate interactive computer programs and digital multimedia with inexpensive materials and written documents in an activity-based environment.

We have seen in the previous chapter that the properties of refraction, diffraction, and interference all require a wave picture of light. In this chapter we will begin to study other aspects associated with light which cannot be explained with a wave picture, but in fact need a particle picture. The coexistence of phenomena which require both a wave and a particle picture is called a wave-particle duality , and is at the heart of the modern theory of quantum physics.

What is Quantum Physics? Does the thought of quantum physics send a chill down your spine, just like the words calculus, differential equations, and -gasp- organic chemistry? You may not even think that quantum physics is a serious science, like the more familiar Newtonian physics. Just relax! I'm sure you're comfortable with regular physics, which describes the way that matter interacts with other matter, i.e. gravity, velocity, etc. If not, maybe you should check out my regular Interactive Physics site. Anyway, quantum physics is just the physics of the incredibly small. While Newtonian physics can suitably describe the orbit of the planets or the energy transformations during a game of pool, quantum physics describes how electrons surround the nucleus of the atom and other subatomic actions. At this point, you may be thinking that there's not that big of a difference between these two sciences. Hey, both explain how matter interacts with other matter, so what's the big deal? The difference is that the common laws of physics begin to deteriorate on small scales. For example, Nippendenso (Japan Electric) built a car that's only half a millimeters long. One could easily mistake it for a grain of rice if not for its gold color. At the scale of 1 to 1000, physics is already changing. Oil would now gum up the engine, and the tires wouldn't have enough traction to move the car.
I'm currently working on a list of quantum physics terms . It may or may not be done soon.

The Origins of Quantum Physics The roots of quantum physics reach far into the past. Even Isaac Newton, the father of classical physics, played a part in the development of quantum physics. He didn't know it at the time, but one of his most famous arguments was a matter of quantum physics.
Newton tried to explain the behavior of light in terms of particles, which he called corpuscles. He was the founder of the physics of particles after all, so why shouldn't light be treated like particles, just like the planets. The Dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens, however, tried to describe light in the terms of waves. Although the wave and particle theories of light were both sound, there was one obvious problem with Huygens' wave theory: when light is obstructed, it creates a shadow with well-defined edges. If light was a wave traveling through Huygens' "ether", it would flow around the edges of the obstruction, blurring the shadow. (This is not the case because the wavelength of light is small enough to create sharp edges, but this was not considered at the time.) Because of this flaw, and the fact that Newton was the physics hotshot of his day, the particle theory was accepted. With quantum physics, though, both of these theories are right. The wave theory did not come up again until an English scientist named Thomas Young devised an interesting experiment to test it. This experiment, which is explained under

Welcome to the homepage of quantum physics. If you want to discover the secrets of the subatomic world then it is the right website for you.
Quantum physics is about the characteristics of subatomic particles and it says that energie is not continuously, but in form of quanta (packages). Before I begin with quantum physics I advise the readers who does not know much about nuclear physics to read the homepage of nuclear physics , because otherwise quantum physics might be difficult to understand. But if you known the structure of an atom and particles then it is not nessecary to read the homepage of nuclear physics. Another thing is very important, during reading about quantum physics you must forget about all logical physical laws, because the laws in the subatomic world are inconceivably for us. After reading this website you might have different conception of the world.

) allows to transform matter into energy and energy into matter. An electron-positron-pair for example can be formed by a no existing photon, which collide to form this photon. This is possible, because photon do not know the differenc between past and future. When we will crook the space-time so strong that the time will be one of the space dimensions and this space dimension will be the time then time travels could be possible, because in the space dimensions we can go forward and backward. In real it is very difficult to crook the space-time so strong, because we need a very strong gravity field. The possibility of time travels is fascinating.

    Quantum Physics
Guide picks In the words of Niels Bohr "anybody who thinks they understand quantum physics is wrong." There is always more to learn and this page is your gateway to that information. Discover quantum weirdness and how it is changing the way we make computers and secret codes through quantum computing and cryptography. Learn about the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle and how it constrains how much we can know about a particle.
    Is the Uncertainty Principle Tenable?

I post and discuss an essay that claims to refute the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics. The Quantum Computer
By exploiting the unusual properties of the quantum world, physicists hope to make a computer that is, in many ways, better and faster than any computer that can ever possibly be built using the techniques of “classical” electronics.
