In the wild, rabbits live in large family groups and two pet rabb its may be housed together if their hutch is big enough. Unfortunately, rabbits are not always friendly towards one another. Females (does) are less aggressive and are easier to keep than bucks. Bucks tend to fight when they become mature and can bully an d beat up smaller, weaker individuals. Bucks are best kept on their own, and really need to be neutered if they are housed with others. The same goes for bucks that are kept with does, otherwise you could end up with about six litters of rabbits every year.
Does can also be spayed to stop them from breeding and to prevent cancer of the womb, which is a common condition in older animals. Some rabbits are kept with a guinea pig companion but there is not much sense to this idea as they are from totally differe nt animal families and don't communicate with one another. This unequal arrangement frequently ends up with a frustrated rabbit and a terrorised guinea pig.
Rabbits do not enjoy being cooped up all day in very small hutches, so it's nice to treat them to th e largest hutch possible. If the weather is dry, rabbits can be allowed outdoors to exercise. Wire runs protect small breeds from cats or dogs and can be used in the garden when it's not too wet or excessively sunny. Runs can be partially roofed if you ar e not going to be at home to look out for weather changes. They should be moved to different parts of the lawn to provide fresh grazing and prevent diseases such as coccidiosis, but do make sure that the lawn has not been recently treated with weed killer or fertilizers.

ow would you feel if you were locked up all alone in a tiny hutch, forgotten at the bottom of the garden? Sadly, all too many rabbits are kept like this because of the thoughtless actions of their owners.
HAPPY FAMILIES
If you own a rabbit there are some very important. things you should know. Rabbits are social animals and like to live in groups in the wild, so it's not fair to keep just one on its own. Two males can live happily together but they must come from the same litter and be neutered to stop them fighting. Females from the same litter can also live together. Rabbits and guinea pigs make good house-mates too, providing they have been introduced at an early age.
It's best to keep the sexes apart, but if you are going to put males and females together they must be neutered and from the same litter. It is extremely important to get your rabbits neutered. Female rabbits can have as many as eight babies in one litter and up to three litters a year. It would be very hard to find good homes for all of them!
HOME CARE
Rabbits need lots of living space to keep them happy and healthy. They need a large weatherproof house at least 150cm long, 60cm wide and 60cm high, with a ramp going down into an enclosed grassy area. The enclosure should be at least one metre high so the rabbits can hop about with ease and it needs to be covered in wire mesh to stop other animals attacking them. It should also be sunk into the ground to stop the rabbits burrowing out.

    Caring For Your Rabbit
Rabbits have long been the favourite pets of children and adults alike. Because of their pleasant nature and natural cleanliness they make excellent indoor as well as outdoor pets and get on well with other pets such as guinea pigs, cats and dogs. Rabbits were discovered about 3000 years ago in Europe. They were not domesticated until the 19th century. Most domesticated rabbits will live for about 6-10 years and so make good long term pets. There are over 200 breeds of rabbits in the world and many varieties are found in this country. Here are some handy tips to help you care for your rabbit
Where will your rabbit live ?
A good quality weatherproof hutch is needed so that your rabbit can be warm and dry even during extremes of weather. A mesh fronted, 2 roomed wooden hutch is best. A pitched roof with a small overhang will stop the rabbit from getting wet in bad weather. Try to raise the hutch off the ground if possible on short legs. This will help reduce damp. The hutch should be big enough to allow your rabbit to move about easily. The minimum floor space needed per rabbit is about 3sq ft for a rabbit up to 5Ib. You should increase the floor space by 1 sq ft per 2Ib if you rabbit is bigger than this or there is more than 1 rabbit. If you wish to keep your rabbit indoors then a suitable wire cage is needed. The hutch should be at least 18 inch high.
