How to give a Cat a Bath
by Cathy Powell
Our Favorite Wild Animal Meerkats were recently made famous by the movie "The Lion King" because one of the main characters, Timon, is a Meerkat. Isn't he cute? As it turns out Meerkats are in the same family as the Mongoose of which there are many different varieties. Meerkats live in family units in boroughs (dens) that they dig underground. The Meerkat in the picture above is probably acting as the lookout for the den. The lookout duty is traded off among the adult Meerkats of the den so someone can alert them to danger at all times. Although Meerkats are not available as pets, we think they are a delightful addition to our information service!

Physical Description Rabbits come in many different sizes and colors. Their ears can be long or short, up or down. Rabbits can weigh from 3 pounds to over 20 pounds and they live 5-10 years. Their fur can be soft or rough, long or short. Behavior Rabbits can be litter boxed trained. Rabbits have scent glands under their chin that they use to mark territory. Rabbits stand on their hind legs which allows them to see better. Thumping the ground with the hind legs warns of danger nearby. Rabbits will lick fingers or sit comfortably in the lap when showing affection. Licking or grooming is a sign of affection. Nudging or huddling is a sign of affection or an attempt to get attention. Rabbits are very intelligent. They enjoy playing with toys, such as wood blocks, plastic toys and other assorted toys. Diet Do not give them salty or sugary snacks. Treat foods such as papaya, pineapple, berries, apple, melon, and pear are best provided in small amounts ; no more than one tablespoon per five pounds of body weight per day.

Caring for your
RABBIT
Rabbits make very popular pets. They are naturally clean and easy to manage. They are best kept in a sheltered position outdoors such as a porch or garden shed. They may be kept in the open air if provided with a suitable weatherproof hutch. They usually get on well with guinea pigs. There are many varieties available. HOUSING
Choose a good quality well constructed hutch. Make sure that it is weatherproof and provide an extra cover to protect it from extremes of weather. Doors must be kept securely fastened. Wooden floors should be treated with a suitable protective sealant. If you plan to keep your rabbit indoors a range of wire cages are available. Always keep your rabbit free from draughts, damp and strong sunlight. You will also need a pen or a means of providing secure outside exercise. BEDDING
Provide plenty of hay or straw for bedding, preferably over a thick layer of whitewood sawdust. Remove any wet bedding, stale food and droppings daily. Wipe any damp patches with a weak solution of a suitable disinfectant. Sprinkle on fresh sawdust. Clean out thoroughly once a week. Clean and move the pen as necessary.

    Feeding for Life!
Advances in pet nutrition are one of the reasons that life expectancy for our pets is better than ever before. Just like us, dogs & cats have differing nutritional needs at different stages of their life. This concept is referred to as "life stage feeding". Let's consider both species separately. CAT
Lifestyle feeding for cats is split into 3 stages:
    • 4 weeks to 9/12 months 9-12 months to 8 years 8 years + at about 8-10 years, cats become "senior" & energy requirements slowly change. The ability to digest protein decreases & so the diet must take this into account. A senior diet can help maximise your cats` quality of life at this stage.

    http://www.monroehumane.org/petcare/rabbit.html
    All About Rabbit Care
A Quick Guide to Rabbit Care ... because
bunnies need more than carrots and a cage.

Adapted from The Humane Society of the United States
Rabbits are intelligent, social - and cute! - animals who make wonderful
companions. The problem is, too many people think of them as
"low-maintenance" pets, when in reality they require lots of care and
attention. Whether you've had a pet bunny for years or are about to
bring one home for the first time, follow these simple guidelines to
keep your rabbit happy and healthy.
      1. Caging Like all companion animals, rabbits should be kept inside with the family. Although rabbits should be given supervised run of the house, they need a place of their own for security and quiet time. Rabbits' cages should be spacious to give them room to exercise and stretch out. For a 6-pound rabbit, the cage should be at least 24 inches wide by 18 inches high by 24 inches deep. A large cage, however, is no substitute for socialization and running time around the house. 2. Housetraining and Bunny-proofing
