The Rogue River
The Wild and Scenic Rogue River , one of the most dramatic rivers in the United States, is a favorite of river runners world wide. Since it is protected under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of Congress, whitewater enthusiasts are guaranteed an uncrowded, pristine environment restricted from the encroachment of civilization. The canyon's charm lies in its thrilling whitewater stretches, alternated with mild riffles, placid pools, and narrow canyons edged by towering cliffs. The old growth Douglas fir forest, mixed with leafy trees, creates a perfect river bank habitat for the abundant wildlife of the Rogue River Canyon. Otter, beaver, deer, Roosevelt elk, black bear, cougars, osprey, bald eagles, mallards, wood ducks, wild turkeys, and many others flourish in the river canyon. or e-mail rwi@wildrogue.com

    1997 NAICS Definitions
713 Amusement, Gambling, and Recreation Industries
713 Amusement, Gambling, and Recreation Industries Industries in the Amusement, Gambling, and Recreation Industries subsector (1) operate facilities where patrons can primarily engage in sports, recreation, amusement, or gambling activities and/or (2) provide other amusement and recreation services, such as supplying and servicing amusement devices in places of business operated by others; operating sports teams, clubs, or leagues engaged in playing games for recreational purposes; and guiding tours without using transportation equipment. This subsector does not cover all establishments providing recreational services. Other sectors of NAICS also provide recreational services. Providers of recreational services are often engaged in processes classified in other sectors of NAICS. For example, operators of resorts and hunting and fishing camps provide both accommodation and recreational facilities and services. These establishments are classified in Subsector 721, Accommodation, partly to reflect the significant costs associated with the provision of accommodation services and partly to ensure consistency with international standards. Likewise, establishments using transportation equipment to provide recreational and entertainment services, such as those operating sightseeing buses, dinner cruises, or helicopter rides, are classified in Subsector 48-49, Transportation and Warehousing.

The famous Lower Yough, below the scenic Ohiopyle Falls, provides some of the best whitewater boating in the Eastern US. You can also hike or bike the 28-mile Youghiogheny River Trail. Located primarily in Fayette County, Ohiopyle State Park encompasses approximately 19,052 acres of rugged natural beauty and serves as the gateway to the Laurel Mountains. The focal point of the area is the more than 14 miles of the Youghiogheny [yaw-ki-gay-nee] River Gorge that passes through the heart of the park. The "Yough" [yawk] provides some of the best whitewater boating in the Eastern U. S. as well as spectacular scenery. Surrounding Ohiopyle Falls is the Falls Day Use Area, the central point for the casual visitor. This area provides parking, modern restrooms, gift shop/snack bar, and overlook platforms with magnificent scenery. Other points of interest include Cucumber Falls and the Cucumber Run Ravine, which is seasonally blanketed with wildflowers and flowering rhododendron. Baughman Rock, Tharp Knob and the Kentuck Scenic overlooks provide spectacular views of the river gorge. Ferncliff Peninsula, formed by a great horseshoe bend in the river, provides a unique natural habitat for numerous botanical treasures, particularly southern wildflowers. Ferncliff Peninsula, a registered National Natural Landmark, contains four miles of easy hiking trails and several overlook areas.

Rafting Group Event proves fun for all
Shouts of “YAAAAH-HOOOOO” filled the air during a recent river rafting trip on the Wenatchee River. This Group Event was customized to meet the needs of students with disabilities from New Horizon School. More than two dozen participants with disabilities, family members, SKIFORALL staff and River Riders staff enjoyed the great weather, fellowship and fun that comes from a trip down the Wenatchee River. This Group Event, managed by program directors Randee Young and Noelle Blazevich, was possible in large part due to the terrific support from River Riders, a rafting guide program based from Leavenworth, Washington. The following email exchange captures the meaningful fun that not only the participants had while rafting, but also our partners from River Riders: dave@camstraps.com

    River Rafting and Getting Wet

One of SKIFORALL’s first on-snow participants more than twenty years ago was Scott Dennis. Scott remains active in the Alpine Program and also shared this note of thanks some time back after a great day river rafting in the Summer Program: “I really enjoyed the river rafting trip —it was more than just a trip, it was a big adventure for all of us. I enjoyed the 2 hour ride to our destination and back. I have some new friends, I enjoyed the ride on the water in our boat, and the best part about the whole trip that I liked was —getting wet. I’m looking forward to doing the river rafting trip again next year. I’m very glad I went and thank you very much for everything!!!” Signed, Scott Dennis

River Tubing Information Enjoy an afternoon drifting and paddling down the river while playing and talking with your friends. Often you see osprey, blue herons, mallards, and other wildlife. This outing is a variety of smooth water and mild rapids. The three components of the activity are floating, shooting mild rapids (class I – II), and hand paddling your tube to be positioned for the river’s path. Our tubes are designed for your comfort, colorful vinyl tubes with convenient handles, not hot black truck tubes. Each tube has a convenient mesh pocket for bringing a lunch and non-alcoholic beverages. The length of your float depends on water conditions, usually about 3-4 hours. A guide accompanies all of our trips. All trips are for private groups of 18 or more and include use of the tube, PFD (flotation vest), and shuttle. We hope that you and a group you are associated with will join us for some fun! Hotel and camping accommodations are available if you are coming to Richmond from out of town. Participants must be able to swim, weigh a minimum of 50 pounds, at least 6 years old, and wear a PFD (personal flotation device) at all times.
