River Notes for Wednesday, November 24, 1999
Important information about River Notes Over the next two days the Hydrometeorological Prediction Center is forecasting up to 7 inches of rainfall in western Washington State. The NWS in Seattle has issued a Flood Statement and flooding of several rivers seems likely. No flooding here... Over Thanksgiving and the long weekend the weather should be generally fair in the Kernville - Lake Isabella area with some variable high clouds at times. At the moment, the first chance for some wet weather appears to be early next week. One benefit to low water is that you can scramble around your favorite steep creek, check out the drops, and do a little day-dreaming. Today's CamPhoto is a low water shot of the slide downstream of the lower falls on Brush Creek. The slide leads to a cool S-turn drop. Here's another shot of a multi-stepped drop upstream of the lower falls. Bill Pooley, the Kaweah River Page webmaster reports an effort is being made to close access to the Kaweah River. The Sevier River, or as the Paiute Indians called it, the Seve'uu , starts it's journey northward from two distinct head waters. Mammoth Creek some 80 miles to the south originates near Cedar Breaks National Monument, and empties into the south fork of the Sevier, which originates south of Bryce Canyon National Park. The other main head water, or East Fork of the Sevier, originates in the Fishlake National Forest north of Otter creek State Park. As the river flows north it is impeded by Paiute Reservoir. From Paiute Reservoir the water is dam released mainly for irrigation purposes. Because it is dam controlled, we are assured of a consistent long season for rafting and kayaking. The river flows through scenic Marysvale valley, surrounded by mountain peaks rising up to 12,189 feet. It then enters Marysvale Canyon and begins a drop of 60 feet per mile. The steep canyon walls present a scenic backdrop with formations and sheer cliffs rising 500 feet above the rivers course. You might encounter bald and golden eagles, red tailed hawks, deer, beaver, muskrat, cougar and many other species in the area including black bear. Your guide will inform you of local history, stories, and geology, and also give tips on other recreational opportunities that abound in this wild and scenic place. The fishing is excellent in the area so be sure to bring your gear.

Easy access to spectacular canoe and kayak destinations is one of the great things about living in west central Florida. Crystal clear springs, blackwater rivers, barrier islands, protected saltwater estuaries - we have it all within 50 miles of the Tampa Bay region. We’re always looking for new places to dip a paddle and this fall we take a trip on the Withlacoochee River near Brooksville.
The Withlacoochee South (another river in Georgia and north Florida bears the same Native American name meaning "Crooked River"), or "The With", as locals call it, is a blackwater river starting in the Green Swamp near Lakeland. The river twists and turns its way in a northwest direction for about 100 miles before dumping into the Gulf of Mexico by Yankeetown.
Paddling enthusiasts can experience some of the best waters of the Withlacoochee in a nine mile stretch between the Silver Lake Recreational Area and the small town of Nobleton.

Large portions of the John Day River system are designated as a National Wild and Scenic River as well as an Oregon Scenic Waterway. The lower section of the John Day River from Tumwater Falls upstream to Service Creek is classified as recreational and has the best rafting potential.
The spring flows bring the best rafting conditions with the river becoming unfloatable usually by July 4th for most boats, though not all. Floating at levels between 1500cfs, and 5000cfs will keep most people away from rocks and trouble. You can check the river flow two ways. Call Oregon River Flow at 503-261-9246, or use the internet to find the Oregon Water Resources Department at http://www.wrd.state.or.us, and click on "Stream Flows".
Service Creek to Twickenham is a 15 mile drift and can be done in one day or two.
Service Creek to Clarno is 48 miles which makes for a nice three night/four day float.
Service Creek to Cottonwood is about 118 miles, a very nice six night trip.
