Kentucky Department for Local Government
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STATEWIDE Frankfort, Ky. (July 27, 2001) – Gov. Paul Patton announced today that 32 projects will be funded with money from the federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP). The Kentucky Department for Local Government (DLG) administers the Recreational Trails Program in Kentucky, which is designed to create public trails for recreational purposes, such as walking, jogging, hiking, and mountain biking. Gov. Patton said, “Providing recreational opportunities to Kentuckians is important to our general health and well being; it improves our quality of life. I’m delighted that many of our communities go after this kind of funding; it shows that local folks care about themselves and their communities.” DLG Commissioner Jody Lassiter says that the department received 57 applications for funding, and encourages those communities that did not receive funding to re-apply, and those who did not apply, to begin the application process. “This program, like other DLG-administered grant programs, is extremely competitive. But for all the hard work communities do in putting an application together, the pay off is definitely worth it.”

The 30- by 300-foot model, one of the largest and most detailed ever built by TVA, comes complete with running water, stones, churning rapids, souse holes, and standing waves.
Rafting Trips
The four-and-a-half-mile Ocoee whitewater rafting area, located below Ocoee Dam No. 2, attracts more than 200,000 visitors each year. A number of commercial outfitters organize and supply rafting trips down the floatway.

Float Trips
The Maligne River From 1986 - 1998 the mid-Maligne River afforded exceptional white water experiences to people from all over the world as well as a summer home to a small band of Harlequin Ducks. Due in large part to pressures from several environmental groups, Parks Canada closed the mid-Maligne in 1999 to protect the Harlequin Duck. Some Facts:
  • The Harlequin Duck is NEITHER ENDANGERED nor THREATENED - (Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada -COSEWIC - May, 2001)
The Western Harlequin is, in fact, a thriving species (numbering 200,000 - 300,000 strong) found from Wyoming to Alaska.
Outside of the protection of the National Park the Western Harlequin Duck is a game bird and is hunted.

The Rafting and Recreational paddling communities believe that the Maligne River can be managed in a manner that would respect and sustain the Maligne Lake Outlet habitat of the Harlequin Duck and provide unique environmental, historical and recreational opportunities for an appropriate number of visitors. We solicit your support for the re-opening of this river.

Letter Announcing Start of Hudson Gorge Primitive Area Management Plan Development
June 12, 2002 To Everyone Interested in the Hudson Gorge Primitive Area: The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has begun the process of developing a unit management plan (UMP) for the Hudson Gorge Primitive Area. As part of the process, the DEC planning team is seeking information and ideas from the public that will help the team in their task of balancing public recreational access and use of the primitive area with the primary goal of protecting its natural resources and wilderness character. The most popular recreational activity in the primitive area is whitewater rafting through the spectacular Hudson River Gorge. Since the late 1970s, commercial outfitters have led rafting trips between the Lake Abanakee dam on the Indian River to the hamlet of North River on the Hudson, 16 miles away. The natural flow of the two rivers is supplemented by releases from the dam, owned by the Town of Indian Lake. The Indian River between the dam and the Hudson is designated recreational under the New York State Wild, Scenic and Recreational River System Act. The stretch of the Hudson River through the gorge is designated wild. With the initiation of a summer rafting program in 1997, the 13 companies that have water release agreements with the Town were able to offer rafting opportunities during an uninterrupted season from early April through Columbus Day each year.
