Rainforests
Diversity and Destruction By Dave Kristula [ 9 January 1997]
[A section of Dave's Site Abstract
The purpose of this paper is introduce the reader to the truths about the rainforests and its destruction. The rainforests are disappearing acres per minute, a number that grows so quickly it would be impossible to cite here because it would grow outdated within a week. The rainforests are home to over half of the entire species of the world, which are being destroyed with the rainforests.
Unlike the rainforest itself which may appear to grow back, it will never be the rainforest it once was, and all of those species that were killed will never return again. Many of those species that have not yet been discovered may very likely cure cancer, AIDS, and many of the other diseases and viruses of today. If the rainforests disappear, so will most of the population of the world. This report will help the reader to learn more about the causes of the horrifying destruction, and ways that the reader can help stop it!

Introduction
This report is about many aspects of the rainforest: what rainforests are, a brief summary of the importances of the rainforests, a description of the destruction of the rainforest, and an informative section about how an average person can help to save the rainforest.

WHY WE SHOULD NOT FAIL TO PLANT MORE TREES.

Planet Earth, which safely carries its inhabitants over 2.5 million kilometres each day, at an average speed of around 107,000 kph, can only perform this task with the aid of a very reliable and efficient shield. Its ironic, but its because our shielding atmosphere works so well that most people rarely give much thought to this gargantuan journey through our Solar System. The way that some of the so-called most intelligent inhabitants of this planet are deliberately damaging our atmosphere, can only be described as gross selfishness or ignorance. In one phase of atmospheric vandalism, they are burning the candle at both ends, by clearing rainforest on a grand scale then polluting the atmosphere by burning the very same trees which were filtering the air that you and I breathe.

The Vanishing Rainforest
It is no secret that our rainforests are quickly becoming an endangered species in and of themselves. It is our commitment to do whatever possible to educate those around us to the extreme importance of the forests and how vulnerable they are to the destructive forces of man. Please take a look at what we have included in our research project. If you have anything you feel should be include on our pages, please drop us a line. In conjunction with our tropical rain forest project, Dale Beasley's sixth grade class of St. Philomena School in Des Moines, Washington, has completed a project entitled, "Rainforests of the Pacific Northwest", examining a different type of rainforest right in our own country.

Rainforests
What is a Rainforest?

Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet forests. They are havens for millions of plants and animals.
Rainforests are extremely important in the ecology of the Earth. The plants of the rainforest generate much of the Earth's oxygen. These plants are also very important to people in other ways; many are used in new drugs that fight disease and illness.
Strata of the Rainforest
Different animals and plants live in different parts of the rainforest. Scientists divide the rainforest into strata (zones) based on the living environment. Starting at the top, the strata are:
  • EMERGENTS : Giant trees that are much higher than the average canopy height. It houses many birds and insects.
  • CANOPY : The upper parts of the trees. This leafy environment is full of life in a tropical rainforest and includes: insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, and more.
  • UNDERSTORY : A dark, cool environment under the leaves but over the ground.
  • FOREST FLOOR : Teeming with animal life, especially insects. The largest animals in the rainforest generally live here.

You can give your children the geographical framework that will help them understand so much else that they study, with free interactive maps. Geography is spatial, why not study it spatially?
The heart of geography, and even the source of its name is the map—a picture of the world which organizes our understanding of places. Manipulating a map, assembling it, is the best way to learn where features are, and how near or far they are to each other. The map is a framework that brings other knowledge together and makes the world understandable.
The "what?" and the "where?" are a necessary beginning to understanding the "who?" and the "why?"
