Plants, places and people
  • An International Visitor Destination

  • A Foundation for the Future
In a giant crater in Cornwall nestle the largest conservatories in the world. Inside: towering rainforests and tropical crops, the hot, dusty Mediterranean with citrus groves and gnarled cork oaks. Outside: crops and landscapes of Chile, Cornwall and the Indian Hills. Why? To set the stage where science, art and technology blend to tell the story of our place in nature, and working with partners, look to our possible positive futures. The Eden Project: testimony to the fact that if you dare to dream you can make a difference. The project is owned by the Eden Trust; a registered charity.

Gander Academy's What Are Tropical Rainforests?
The Web pages listed below are great sites to visit to research what tropical rainforests are.
  • What is a Rainforest?
The nutrient-filled soil in the rain forest is only 4 inches deep with red clay beneath it. This causes the trees to have very shallow roots.
  • What is a Rainforest
ropical rainforests are complex ecosystems, which are made up of four distinct environments. These "sub-ecosystems" are referred to as levels. In each level, animals and plants haveadapted to the existing environmental conditions. The different levels are: the emergent level, the canopy, the understory, and forest floor.
  • A Closer Look at Rainforests
Rainforest is a type of tropical forest that is dominated by closely spaced trees forming an unbroken canopy.. It is one of the most widespread and important types of forest in the world.
  • Rainforests
Rain Forest, woodland characterized by lush vegetation and comparatively high temperature and rainfall throughout the year. Rain forests are the world's most biologically diverse ecosystems.
  • Tropical Rainforests The tropical forests occur near the equator where temperature and light levels remain similar all year. Where the rainfall is also spread evenly throughout the year, tropical rainforests occur; where precipitation levels vary and there is a pronounced dry season, tropical moist forests grow, and in areas with less moisture are dry forests and savannas.

A Walk in the Treetops A Bird's-eye View of Kakum National Park Contributed by Sharon Safran, Conservation International The long-tailed Verreaux's Touraco floats down from the sky. From your vantage point on the canopy walkway, you see a brilliant flash of red on the wings of this magnificent bird as it lands a few feet away to settle on a Kuntan tree, one of the tallest trees in the forest canopy. This is something you'd never see from the forest floor. Located in Kakum National Park in the West African country of Ghana , Africa's only canopy walkway is suspended 100 feet above the ground, offering you what is truly a bird's eye view of the rainforest. At this height, you don't have to be an expert to identify the colorful patterns of tropical birds as they glide through the forest below you. "The slight swaying is intimidating, but it's an incredible sensation to walk along it. The experience is pure adrenaline, and is definitely not for people with a fear of heights," said Mari Omland, project manager of the Ghana program at Conservation International. Despite its scary appearance, expert designers and climbers were consulted throughout all the phases of its construction, to ensure that the walkway was safely built and able to meet world-class safety standards.

Students and teachers will find curricular resources (information, content...) to help them learn about this topic. In addition, there are also links to instructional materials (lesson plans) which will help teachers provide instruction in this theme. Please read our
    Animal Awareness
A lesson plan designed for intermediate to junior high students. Students research a rainforest animal and present a report to classmates.
    Animals of the Tropical Rainforest
In this webquest activity, primary students have the task of finding out more about 5 animals from the rainforest, drawing one of the animals, finding and taping animal sounds, and learning more on what can be done to protect the rainforest.
    Biome Investigation
Using picture/graphical resources on the Internet as starting points, intermediate students investigate the six biomes of the world in this lesson plan. Two specific objectives are to describe the major factors that shape biomes and to represent the connections between the factors that determine biome development and plant and animal life.
    Chocolate Fun
A lesson plan that has students make hot chocolate with different brands and test the pH levels. Information and links are to resources about the rainforest cacao plant.

BioEsfera was developed by , of Rice University , as a response to the need to train teachers in Spanish and Conservation Biology, and to provide an opportunity for the acquisition of new cultural perspectives in a society that characterizes itself for its diverse ethnic and cultural composition. The group of teachers that participated in this effort are all members of The Rice School/La Escuela Rice's Teaching staff. This is a new school of the Houston ISD program which is implementing a novel approach to schooling which includes bilingual English/Spanish instruction as part of its teaching method. The project was financed, in its entirety by the school. Teachers paid for the EcoEscuela portion. The Escuela Rice parents group and the community help with the rest of the funds by direct contribution or by helping with fund raising events such as:
    • Bake Sales
    • Garage Sales
    • Car Wash
    • Pizza Sales
BioEsfera was made possible thanks to not only the participants but to the support of all of the Escuela Rice community, including a heavy economic participation from the Parents Group.

What Happens When the Rainforests are Cut Down? Last Songbirds
Songbirds, which help farmers in the U.S. by eating insects, can no longer winter in tropical forests. Forest People
Forest people lose their homes, their culture, and sometimes their lives. Their knowledge of the forest is lost. Changed Climate
Burning huge areas of rainforest releases carbon, causing changes in wind currents and rainfall around the world. Extinction
Thousands of species of rainforest animals and plants are lost forever. Undiscovered Medicines
Plants that might provide new medicines and products become extinct before they can be studied. Changed Water Cycle
Without the rainforest to soak up rain and release it slowly, floods and droughts become more common. Scarce Products
Rainforest products become scarce and expensive. Gene Pool
The main gene pool on earth is largely lost. Scientists could use the gene pool to develop new products and improve the world's basic food crops. Greenhouse Effect
Burning the forest adds to the greenhouse effect . Carbon dioxide traps heat in the lower atmosphere. This may cause global warming. Soil Erosion
Soil becomes eroded, dry, and sour. The land becomes a desert.

He gazed at me tranquilly out of his rheumy washed-out blue eyes and sat there dressed like the last of the beachcombers with that disgraceful house crumbling and tilting around him. God, the whole thing was just unbelievable. 'What are you doing here for God's sake?' I yelled into his deaf old ears, leaning right up into his face so that he would have to hear me. 'Why are you here anyway?' And now hearing me he smiled a secret and superior smile, as though he knew something that I didn't, and croaked out in an old voice that was equal parts W.C.
