Take a Walk in the Rainforest A Self-guided Tour
Tropical Rainforests are home to 50-90% of all the world's species of plants and animals. Rainforests provide us with oxygen, help maintain our climate and give us essential foods and medicines. Rainforests have intense tropical sunlight, high temperatures and virtually constant rainfall. This environment has enabled organisms to develop specialized adaptations to the environment and to each other. Over time, this specialization has promoted extraordinary biodiversity in the rainforest.
Please follow this self-guided tour of some
of the various plants and animals you would see
as you take a walk through the rainforest. Begin your tour by selecting an arrow that interests you:
Most of the monkeys and apes in the world live in the rainforests. Monkeys spend most of their time leaping around the trees of the the rainforests.
Rainforests are also very busy at night when different animals, called nocturnal animals, wake up. Some of the sounds you would hear at night are frogs croaking, monkey hooting, and bats squeaking as they fly.
Many different types of plants can be found in the rainforest. The plants live at different locations in the rainforest depending on their need for light and water.

84. COCORI Complete Costa Rica-Nature's Cathedral-Rain Forests
Article on the conservation of the rainforests, by Cocori.
http://www.cocori.com/library/eco/naturcat.htm
by Michael L. Smith It's quiet. Very quiet. But it isn't silent and it's far from dead. Listen closelya faint rustle of leaves high overhead, a bird calls, some strange insect punctuates the air with an alien sound. And the colors! So many greens and browns; with an exclamation of velvety red or yellow or white scattered around; just enough to keep it interesting. The air is warm, humid, sometimes stifling; it stirs very little here. Looking more closely, one realizes that there is tremendous activity all around. This is a unique environment; highly fragile in the hands of man and extremely important to the survival of man. O ne hundred years from now, historians may be compelled to refer to the second half of the 20th century as that brief period of time when much of the earth's biological diversity was eradicated in the name of survival, progress and profits. Paleontologists speak of the end of the dinosaur age as a period of massive extinctions, yet during that perioddespite the assistance of asteroids and volcanic dust cloudsthe planet lost an average of only one species every 1,000 years. Today, human activities are exterminating plant and animal species at a rate of 1,000 each year. By the end of this century, this rate is predicted to reach 10,000 species per yearmore than one species every hour! Unbelievable? These figures are the accepted estimates of some of the world's most eminent biological researchers. Man is on the way to destroying a quarter of all the species of plants and animals that live on the earth today. Most of the species are insects, but they are joined by a large variety of birds, mammals and reptiles, and by thousands of species of plants.

http://www.cap.nsw.edu.au/bb_site_intro/stage3_Modules/rainforest_module/
Background
Rainforests are a complex balance of plants and animals. This is called an ecosystem.
In the past, Australian Aboriginals have found food, shelter and medicine within the
rainforest, but have done so, without damage to the ecosystem.
Today human involvement is threatening the rainforest environment.
Question
Why do you think the Australian government should make laws
to protect our rainforests?
Task
Congratulations, your school has chosen you to join a team of scientists who are
going on a dangerous two week expedition into unknown territories of an Australian rainforest. You are to provide evidence which will help support the government's decision to implement laws to protect large areas of rainforests. You are to use your time in the rainforest to study and investigate the plants and animals which live there, and their dependency upon one another. You must also consider the overall effects to the environment of any human involvement, and use this information to explain why the goverment should make

Tropical Rainforests
Introduction
Tropical Rainforest Sites
While the Amazon may be the most famous of rainforests because of its size, there are many other tropical rainforest ecosystems around the world. These six web sites all offer some general information about tropical rainforests. Some are more information oriented and some are more activist or conservation oriented.
  • Tropical Rainforest in Surinam is a site with a lot of information about the rainforests in the small South American country of Surinam. While much of the information is general in nature, a lot of the information here deals specifically with the wildlife and people of Surinam. Rainforest Action Network is an organization which is dedicated to helping protect rainforests through education and activism. You will find specific information about how you can directly help protect rainforests as well as general information and a section designed specifically for Kids Rainforest Alliance Site is the starting point to access the Rainforest Alliance and like RAN above has a great Kids space as well as resources for schools and information about conservation.

Bill Gates, Buy the Rainforests
View Current Signatures Sign the Petition To: Bill Gates, Microsoft Mr. Gates,
We admire your philanthropy and all that you have done for the world so far. We would like to invite you to make the ultimate move to save the world: buy all of the rainforests to preserve them for our descendants, and so that we may continue to breathe for years to come.
The rainforests of the world are disappearing at an alarming rate. If deforestation continues at its present rate, South America will be a desert by the 2040's. However, you can save us. You can buy the rainforests and turn them into protected land, full of happy monkeys, rainbow-colored parrots, and majestic trees filling our air with clean, pure oxygen.
We estimate that, according to the figures on the Rainforest Action Network's website (http://www.ran.org) that you could buy all of the rainforests in Bolivia, Brazil, Central America, Colombia, Congo, Ecuador, Indonesia, Cote D'Ivoire, Laos, Madagascar, Mexico, Nigeria, the Philippines, and Thailand for $28,891,561,120, assuming an average price of $40 per acre. If that is too much money, you could opt to save the rainforests in South America only, or you could ask your friends to help out.
Thank you for taking the time to consider our plea.

RAINFORESTS
Did you know the Strangler Fig is one of the best known of all rainforest plants. It actually grows around another tree - and may eventually kill its host. A FEMALE FIG-BIRD FEASTS ON RAINFOREST FIGS
A strangler fig starts to grow when a bird or possum dropping, containing the strangler fig seed, lodges somewhere high in the host tree. If nutrients, water and sunlight are present, the seed germinates and soon sends long, thin roots down the trunk of the host tree to the forest floor.
Once the roots reach the nutrient-rich leaf litter below, the strangler fig grows quickly. A network of roots envelops the host, and up in the canopy, the strangler fig begins to compete with the host tree for the precious light. In time, the strangler fig can grow to over 45 metres, and the host tree can be overwhelmed, and die. LARGE UPRIGHT LEAVES OF THE 'BIRD-NEST' FERN
The bird's nest fern is another plant that attaches itself to a host, though, unlike the strangler fig, it doesn't present a threat to its host. The bird's nest fern is an epiphyte, a plant that grows on another plant, or a rockface, or even a solid enough vine, without taking nutrients from its host.

Tropical Rainforests
If the present rate of tropical deforestation continues, there will likely be no tropical rainforests left in the world in just 30 years. Deforestation in the tropical areas of the world is following a course similar to the earlier clearing of the forests in Europe and the United States, only more rapidly. Since just 1950, the world's population has more than doubled to more than 5 billion people, with the fastest population growth being in the tropics. Today, more than 2.7 billion people live in the tropics alone, more than lived in the entire world as recently as 1950. To provide food, wood, fuel and resources for the world's growing population, and to make room for the exploding tropical population, the world's tropical rainforests are literally disappearing. Even with tropical deforestation at an all-time high, tropical hardwood prices continue to climb as world demand for tropical hardwoods continues to grow. A single teak log can now bring as much as $20,000. Annual world consumption of tropical hardwoods is now more than 250 million cubic meters, or over 100 billion board feet, per year.
