Across the United States, colleges and universities increasingly are relying on part-time/adjunct faculty as a low-cost substitute for full-time professors. Two out of every three first-time hires in U.S. community colleges are part-timers, and full-time tenure-track faculty no longer teach the majority of introductory courses at many elite institutions. This is a dramatic change from the traditional practice of using outside professionals to teach specialized courses or to fill short-term staffing shortages. Nationwide, 43 percent of the country’s college and university faculty are classified as adjuncts or part-timers, up from 33 percent a decade earlier.
