Care of Rodents Below is some basic care information for rodents. Please consult detailed care manuals for these animals or check with your veterinarian. Hamsters, gerbils, rats and mice are members of the rodent family. They have long upper and lower incisors (front teeth) that grow continuously. All rodents require material to gnaw, in order to keep their incisors sharp and worn to the proper length. Hay, cardboard tubes and wood (apple, pear, willow) are all suitable for your rodent to chew on. Generally, rodents are more active at night and can be quite noisy!
Housing
A cage measuring 60 x 30 x 30 cm. is a minimum size for hamsters, gerbils and mice. Rats require larger habitats. Absorbent materials such as white wood shavings should be used to line the cage bottom. Gerbils and hamsters like to dig and burrow so adding a layer of peat moss allows them to exercise this behaviour. Clean the cage often at least once a week. Inside the cage, rodents should have a cardboard or wooden house, toys such as plastic tubes and small boxes, some shredded tissue for nest building and an exercise wheel for smaller rodents. Secure cages are a necessity as rodents, especially hamsters and rats, are real escape artists.

As a result, very little practical and useful information exists onthe medical care and treatment of individual pet mice and rats.
http://www.caringtogether.com/exotics/micerats.html
Domestically raised mice and rats are very popular pets in the United States. They are readily available, relatively inexpensive and easy to care for, and usually enjoy human handling. These animals have been used extensively in research laboratories for many years. Consequently, their medical problems (many of which are inherited disorders resulting from intensive inbreeding) have been traditionally approached on a group basis rather than on an individual basis. As a result, very little practical and useful information exists on the medical care and treatment of individual pet mice and rats. Further, even less information is available to the pet owner on responsible home care of rodents and recognition of their potential medical problems. Mice
In the wild, mice may exhibit aggression among themselves, though establishment of a social "pecking order" tends to reduce this potentially injurious behavior. Individual males apparently dominate groups of mice using this social pecking order. Females with litters may fight to defend their nests. Domestication and intensive breeding of mice have resulted in a tremendous genetic diversity of mouse populations. The Swiss Albino mouse has become one of the most popular strains for pets but many others are commonly used in this capacity.

Handling and Restraint
As stated above, domestic mice and rats generally tolerate gentle handling, though both may bite if startled or handled roughly. Mice are more likely to bite than rats under these circumstances. In fact, mice housed alone are more likely to be aggressive with a handler than those housed in groups. Cage territoriality (possessiveness) may be exhibited by some pet rats. We have encountered a large number of pet rats, normally docile in nature, that attack the fingers or hands of a handler opening and entering its enclosure. This aggressive behavior is not noted when attempts to pick up these rats are made outside of their enclosures. It is customary to pick up a mouse by gently lifting it up by the tail and placing it into a cupped hand. If a more secure hold is necessary (giving medications or food orally), the handler may grasp or pinch as much skin as possible over the neck, just behind the head. The mouse can then be picked up and turned over on its back by rotating the wrist. The tail can be restrained by gently grasping it between the fourth (ring) and fifty (pinkie) fingers of the same hand. Rats can be lifted by their tail but great caution must be exercised in doing so The skin of a rat's tail can easily tear, so it is best to grasp only the base of the tail. Further, suspending the entire weight of a rat by its tail is, no doubt, painful for the rat. Therefore, this practice should be only momentary. Tail-lifting a rat that is grasping a fabric (wire mesh, etc.) may injure the tail and may also break or tear the toenails.

The rat can then be gently cradled against the handler's body, using minimal restraint.

Caring For Your Rat
Rats make very good pets. They are very intelligent and can be tamed if handled gently. It is best to keep rats singly or in female pairs only as they do have a tendency to fight. Here are some handy tips to help you care for your rat Where will your rat live ? A cage that is chew proof will provide a suitable home for your rat. This should be made of stainless steel or aluminium. The minimum size should be 24 inches x 15 inches x 9 inches for one rat, bigger if there is to be a pair of females. Alpine Pet Shop will be pleased to show you their range. The bottom of the cage should be covered with wood shavings, sawdust or peat that is at least 2 inches thick. A separate nest box should also be provided with suitable bedding material such as shredded paper (NOT newspaper). Rats are not suitable as outdoor pets. Soiled or wet bedding should be removed each day and the cage cleaned twice a week. Once a month the cage and contents need to be cleaned and disinfected.

Mice and Rats
Rats and mice in the wild can be one of the worst pests for mankind, notwithstanding their indispensable part within the ecosystem. Domestic rats and mice, on the other hand, contribute a great deal to the advancement of research for the benefit of man. Domestic rats and mice are not the same as their wild counterparts, having been domesticated for over 100 years. Rats and mice AS PETS suffer from bad "press" with much prejudice and misunderstanding directed toward them.
As urban sprawl continues to limit the necessary space needed to keep dogs and cats, rats and mice as pets are gradually emerging as an ideal substitute. Easy to keep, with minimal space and care requirements, they provide all the pleasure and satisfaction of a warm, cuddly, intelligent, and friendly pet companion. They are also very inexpensive to obtain along with the required accessories needed to make them happy. Domesticated rats make excellent pets for children and adults alike. They are highly intelligent (being the most used in studies for intelligence and psychology research), clean, and very sociable.

I don't really want to talk much about myself, so instead I decided to devote my home page to some of the things I like best: my pets! I have many pets, mostly guinea pigs and natal rats, and I try to have recent photos of my pets for all to see. I try to let each of my pets have their own page on this site. But that is not enough... I have been working on this website for many years, and I have added stuff like how to care for your pets, breeds, genetics, diseases, and so on. By now I must say that I have never found a site on the Internet with more information about guinea pigs, rats or mice than I have on this page.

Eva's Home Page Eva's Cavy Page Eva's Mouse Page Eva's Rat Page ... Eva's Rat Articles Differing views on pet care:
I think it is very interesting that people have so many different views on the topic of pet care. I have been thinking about this a lot. Some people I know use the smallest cages they possibly can and they give their animals the cheapest and easiest-to-feed kind of food to the animals, in order to be able to keep as many animals as possible for breeding purposes. Some of these people, when asked, of course have totally other views on pet care than the person with just a few highly beloved pets. This is exactly as with dog owners. Some dog owners think it is totally ok to leave the dog alone all day, and take it out on a 5 minute pee walk once in a while. Other dog owners would feel that it is totally unthinkable to leave such a highly social animal as a dog alone all day, and would also take the dog out for long walks every day. Some dog owner's fool themselves by getting two dogs and think that two dogs may be happier together in the absence of their owner. But two lonely dogs are just two lonely dogs, waiting for their owner. It is better to pay somebody to walk the dog during the day, or even pay somebody (a human companion) to

Rats and mice as pets
Rats and mice are kept both as children’s pets and for show purposes. They can make excellent pets if well cared for, and soon become accustomed to being handled if enough time is spent with them. Rats especially can easily be trained, making them interesting and rewarding to own. They are essentially nocturnal and therefore more active at night, but will respond to stimulation and company during the day without generally becoming grumpy. Both rats and mice do have a characteristic smell and this should be a consideration when deciding to keep them as pets. Obviously regular cleaning out will help, but even the most spotless mouse will still have a “mousy odour”. Rats and mice tend to be clingy animals and will happily crawl all over their owners without trying to run away and hence relationships between owner and pet can be easily formed. Rats and mice are inexpensive animals to keep and costs apart from housing and feeding, such as trips to the vet, are likely to be infrequent, They do however need company and should be handled regularly so that they remain tame. This can be time consuming and is worth remembering when considering acquiring them as pets. Both rats and mice need the company of others and should not be kept as solitary pets.

Pocket Pets
Guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats, and rabbits are often called pocket pets . Because they are small, cute, fuzzy, and usually inexpensive these little animals are traditionally very popular pets.

Mice, Rats, Gerbills and Hamsters. These little sweeties are often chosen as pets for the first time animal guardian because they are relatively low maintenace and have gentle dispositions. Nutrition Commercial rodent pellets are available for Gerbils and Hamsters at pet stores. All four creatures have similar diets so if you have a rat, gerbil pellets are fine. For a more palatable diet, supplement the pellets with diced fruit and seeds, but don’t overdo it. These little guys have habit of filling up on the yummy stuff and ignoring the pellets, and eating that way will not satisfy their daily nutritional needs. Housing As the popularity of keeping small animals increases, more and more cages designed for them are appearing in pet stores all over. But, I recommend a glass aquarium with a screen cover. Ferrets - More like a cat than a rodent when it comes to care and maintenance.
