Chaucer's Middle English
(To go directly to Index of Lessons click here Introduction The best way to learn to read Chaucer's Middle English is to enroll in a course with a good and enthusiastic teacher (as most teachers of Chaucer are). Though students enrolled in Chaucer courses may find some parts of this page useful, it is intended primarily for those who, for a variety of reasons, cannot take such a course but nevertheless want to increase their enjoyment of Chaucer's works. The aim of this page is to provide the user with the means to learn to pronounce Chaucer's English and to acquire an elementary knowledge of Chaucer's grammar and vocabulary. It does not offer much on matters of style and versification and has almost nothing on the literary qualities of Chaucer's work. The user who works conscientiously through these materials should be ready to study such matters on his or her own (beginning with the materials on the Harvard Geoffrey Chaucer Website, and exploring other sources both on and off the Web). It is assumed that the user of the page has a printed text of The Canterbury Tales. There are texts on line, but none with the quality one finds in print (a printed edition, with a good glossary and notes, remains the most effective form of hypertext). The exercises on this page assume that the user has a copy of either the

Lesson 6: The Shipman's Tale
One might think that the next step should be to go on to the General Prologue. However, the General Prologue is rather difficult compared to some of the tales themselves and one can best enjoy it when he or she has a full control of the basic elements of Middle English. Working one's way through a shorter and simpler tale is the best way of attaining that control. The Shipman's Tale is brief and easily accessible to modern sensibilities (and it is fun). It is therefore a good work with which to begin. Here is a summary of the plot:
A rich merchant of Saint Denis (near Paris) has a beautiful wife and maintains a splendid household. The monk Dan John, who claims he is a cousin, is a frequent visitor. One day Dan John comes to call when the merchant is busy in his counting house. He makes advances to the wife, who says her wretched husband will not give her a hundred franks, which she needs to pay a debt; if he can give her that amount, she will show her gratitude. He says he will bring them, and he "caught her by the flanks." When the merchant must go on business to Flanders the monk borrows a hundred franks from him. He gives the money to the wife, and he takes his pleasure of her. When the merchant returns and asks for his money, Dan John says he repaid it to the wife. When the Merchant later asks his wife for the money (which she has spent), she turns the tables, telling him she spent it on clothing, since it is to his honor to have her richly dressed. She will pay him back in bed "score it upon my tail."

    TESOL Certification: What Are The Options?
    Bronwyn Coltrane Sally Morrison
    ERIC Clearinghouse on Languages and Linguistics At ERIC/CLL, we receive many queries about the options available to earn teaching credentials for English as a second language (ESL). Prospective ESL teachers want to know about the kinds of certificates and endorsements available and where and how they can earn one. Those who are not currently teachers ask about undergraduate and graduate programs in TESL (teaching ESL); those who are already teaching in other fields ask about add-on certification in ESL. To answer their questions and provide additional information on ESL certification, ERIC/CLL is planning a new Resource Guide Online to be published early in 2003. In the meantime, this article is designed to give prospective ESL teachers a general overview of their certification options.

Chapter 6, Teaching Indigenous Languages Return to the Table of Contents Coyote as Reading Teacher: Oral Tradition in the Classroom
Armando Heredia and Norbert Francis Legends, myths, folk tales, and stories have long been an important aspect of the history and culture of indigenous people; vehicles to preserve, carry, and teach historical events, religious beliefs, ethics, and values to the young and old. Ethnographers and students of folklore have described in detail and extensively analyzed the literary aspects of oral tradition. However, despite the broad consensus on the artistic merits of traditional stories and the role they have played in the linguistic and cultural continuity of indigenous peoples, they are little used in schools. This paper discusses the instructional uses of traditional stories is meant to serve as a contribution to realizing their educational potential. Story telling was a way of relating history, transmitting cultural knowledge, and giving expression to the esthetic and poetic endeavors of all Native American peoples. As Chief Standing Bear explained: Story-telling is an ancient profession, and these stories are among our oldest possessions. For many years before the white man ever came to our homeland these legends were told over and over, and handed down from generation to generation. They were our books, our literature, and the memories of the storytellers were the leaves upon which they were written. (quoted in Humishuma, 1990, p. 305)

This collaborative initiative involves the leadership and support of many of California's decision- and policy-making entities (the Governor, the Legislature, the State Board of Education, the Superintendent of Public Instruction, etc.). Each of these important stakeholders has demonstrated commitment and leadership in the quest to provide the necessary guidance and resources for promoting effective reading/language arts instruction. Two benchmark documents published by the California Department of Education continue to form the basis for the CRI. Both documents, Every Child a Reader (1995), the report of the Superintendent's Task Force on Reading, and Teaching Reading (1996), the Reading Program Advisory, described a rationale and a research base for a balanced and comprehensive approach to the teaching of early reading that incorporates:
  • a strong literature, language, and comprehension program that includes a balance of oral and written language;

    NATIONAL STUDY DEPICTS SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS EDUCATION IN THE YEAR 2000 Chapel Hill, NC - December 13, 2001 - A new report released today by Horizon Research, Inc . describes the status of science and mathematics education in kindergarten through the twelfth grade (K-12) in the United States. The 2000 National Survey of Science and Mathematics Education included approximately 6,000 teachers in over 1,200 public and private schools. The study was conducted by Horizon Research, Inc with support from the National Science Foundation. The full report of the 2000 National Survey can be accessed at http://2000survey.horizon-research.com/ The 2000 National Survey documents that in the elementary grades, much less instructional time is devoted to science instruction than to mathematics. On a typical day, nearly all grade K-4 classes spend time on mathematics instruction, compared to only 7 in 10 for science instruction. Further, while mathematics lessons in the early grades tend to be substantially longer than science lessons, the amount of time devoted to reading/language arts instruction in elementary schools dwarfs that spent on either mathematics or science. Based on teachers' descriptions of their most recent lesson, more than 80 percent of the science lessons in grades K-12 include discussion, and a majority of lessons include lecture. Use of hands-on/laboratory activities varies by grade range; approximately 6 in 10 science lessons in grades K-4 involve students doing hands-on/laboratory activities, compared to 5 in 10 in grades 5-8 and 4 in 10 in high school. Group work is included in more than half of all science lessons.
