Former President Ronald Reagan Turns 92 2003-02-06 20:36:26 GMT (Reuters) LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Former U.S. President Ronald Reagan turned 92 on Thursday, increasingly isolated by Alzheimer's disease from both his family and a troubled world over which he once held sway. Reagan, one of the most popular presidents of the United States and now the longest-lived, spent his birthday at his Bel-Air home where he has been cared for by his wife Nancy, away from the public eye, for almost 10 years. He told the nation in 1994 that he was suffering from the degenerative brain disease. Spokeswoman Joanne Drake said a "quiet celebration at home" was planned with Nancy, possibly including visits from his daughter Patti and son Michael. "My guess is that there will be chocolate on the menu somewhere," Drake said, referring to one of Reagan's favorite foods. Drake said Reagan was "comfortable." In a poignant interview last September, Nancy Reagan said she was no longer sure that her husband recognized her because of the deterioration he has suffered, adding that she missed reminiscing about their past together. "The golden years are when you can sit back, hopefully, and exchange memories, and that's the worst part about this disease," she said. "There's nobody to exchange memories with, and...we had a lot of memories."

Thank you, Keith. Governor and Mrs. Wilson, Mr. And Mrs. Wick, Trustees of the President Reagan Library and Museum, all of you who have served your country, distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen. Never before has such an exhibit been done on this scale.  The Central Intelligence Agency and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum have collaborated in this endeavor to promote a deeper understanding of the role of intelligence in the Presidential decision making process and in the American system of government. The CIA, which has the best museum An additional 76 rare and exceptional artifacts are on loan courtesy of Mr. Keith Melton, whose splendid private collection of espionage equipment numbers close to 7,000 pieces, making it the largest private collection of espionage paraphernalia in the world.  I also want to thank Danny Biederman, who has loaned to the Library for this exhibit some of his collection of Hollywood spy memorabilia.  Hollywood has long been fascinated with the world of espionage, and, of course, most of its portrayals of the intelligence business are pure fantasy.  There was an occasion, however, when Hollywood and the CIA collaborated to pull off one of the great clandestine exfiltration operations in history. Studies In Intelligence I also want to thank Duke Blackwood and the multi-talented staff of the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library for their superb work in creating this exhibit. And, I want to thank the Board of Trustees for the opportunity to present this visual lesson on the history of intelligence.

Address at the U.S.-French Ceremony at Omaha Beach on the 40th Anniversary of D-Day. President Ronald Reagan, June 6, 1984. Normandy, France. We stand today at a place of battle, one that 40 years ago saw and felt the worst of war. Men bled and died here for a few feet of - or inches of sand, as bullets and shellfire cut through their ranks. About them, General Omar Bradley later said, "Every man who set foot on Omaha Beach that day was a hero." Some who survived the battle of June 6, 1944, are here today. Others who hoped to return never did. "Someday, Lis, I'll go back," said Private First Class Peter Robert Zannata, of the 37th Engineer Combat Battalion, and first assault wave to hit Omaha Beach. "I'll go back, and I'll see it all again. I'll see the beach, the barricades, and the graves." Those words of Private Zanatta come to us from his daughter, Lisa Zanatta Henn, in a heart-rending story about the event her father spoke of so often. "In his words, the Normandy invasion would change his life forever," she said. She tells some of his stories of World War II but says of her father, "the story to end all stories was D-Day."

Nixon. After joining the Republican party in 1962 he began to champion conservative causes and enthusiastically endorsed presidential candidate Barry Goldwater Ford , respectively. Four years later he won the 1980 nomination and, with his running mate, George Bush , resoundingly defeated incumbent President Jimmy Carter Reagan's presidency had barely begun when he was shot by a would-be assassin, John Hinckley, Jr., on Mar. 30, 1981; he recovered completely and quickly. Advocating a balanced budget to combat inflation, he reversed long-standing political trends by successfully pursuing his supply-side economic program of tax and non-defense budget cuts through Congress. Adopting a hardline stance against the Soviet Union and other Communist countries, Reagan advocated and oversaw the largest peacetime escalation of military spending in American history; in 1983 he proposed the controversial and expensive space-based defense system known as the Strategic Defense Initiative After a recession in 1982, the economy picked up between 1983 to 1986, spurred largely by the tax cuts and deficit financing; on the strength of the economic rebound, the successful invasion of the Marxist-controlled island of Grenada, and his personal popularity, he defeated Democratic nominee Walter

Biography

Ronald Reagan, (1911- ), ra'g[sch ]n, 40th PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES . Ronald Reagan's political career, which came relatively late in life and embraced two terms as governor of California and two unsuccessful attempts to gain the REPUBLICAN presidential nomination, culminated in his election to the presidency in 1980. The beginning of the Reagan administration was remarkable by almost any standard. On inauguration day, Jan. 20, 1981, 52 Americans who had been held hostage by Iran for 444 days were released at almost the same time the new president was taking the oath of office. Slightly over two months later, an assassination attempt put the president in the hospital for several weeks. By the time of the 1984 presidential election, a majority of the American people believed that Reagan had restored public confidence in government. He won reelection by an overwhelming popular vote and with the greatest number of ELECTORAL votes ever gained by a presidential candidate. Despite some vicissitudes in his second term, he remained one of the most popular American presidents as his years in office drew to a close.
