Ronald Reagan
Speech at the National Republican Convention 1992
Quote Thank you, Paul for that kind introduction. And Mr. Chairman, delegates, friends, fellow Americans, thank you so very much for that welcome. You've given Nancy and me so many wonderful memories, so much of your warmth and affection, we cannot thank you enough for the honor of your friendship. Over the years, I've addressed this convention as a private citizen, as a governor, as a presidential candidate, as a president and now, once again tonight, as private citizen Ronald Reagan. Tonight is a very special night for me. Of course, at my age, every night's a very special night. After all, I was born in 1911. Indeed, according to the experts, I have exceeded my life expectancy by quite a few years. Now this a source of great annoyance to some, especially those in the Democratic party. But, here's the remarkable thing about being born in 1911. In my life's journey over these past eight decades, I have seen the human race through a period of unparalleled tumult and triumph. I have seen the birth of communism and the death of communism. I have witnessed the bloody futility of two World Wars, Korea, Vietnam and the Persian Gulf. I have seen Germany united, divided and united again. I have seen television grow from a parlor novelty to become the most powerful vehicle of communication in history. As a boy I saw streets filled with model-Ts; as a man I have met men who walked on the moon.

Students will understand the following:
The Cold War came to an end under the watch of Reagan and Gorbachev. For this lesson, you will need: Access to tape recorders or video cameras for interviews With the end of the Cold War and the dismantling of some weapons systems by both the United States and the former Soviet Union, your students may not appreciate the nuclear threat that school-age and college-age people lived under from the 1950s through the 1990s. This project gives your students an opportunity to make Cold War history come alive by interviewing adults who remember growing up in a United States in the decades of an ever-expanding nuclear arsenal. Begin by checking whether all students in your class have someone to interview about the experience of going to school and living in the United States in the 1950s and 1960s. Recent immigrants to this country may need your help in locating adults who will share with them what it was like to be a child or young adult here during those decades.

Subject Ronald Wilson Reagan by Andrew Sullivan From The London Times
Music: Britannia For The London Times Reagan was right about almost everything. He will turn 90 this Tuesday, but in all likelihood he will barely be aware of it. The cruelty of Alzheimer's has robbed Ronald Reagan of the capacity for clear memory. But that doesn't apply to the rest of us. He seems, in some respects, an historical oddity now, his political and cultural presence obscured in America by the Clinton psychodrama and the Bush dynasty. But the truth is, his successors do not begin to compare to either in achievement or legacy. Reagan is still, in my view, the architect of our modern world, and nowhere is this clearer than in the United States. "Our system freed the individual genius of man. Released him to fly as high & as far as his own talent & energy would take him. We allocate resources not by govt. decision but by the mil's. of decisions customers make when they go into the mkt. place to buy. If something seems too high-priced we buy something else. Thus resources are steered toward those things the people want most at the price they are willing to pay. It may not be a perfect system but it's better than any other that's ever been tried." Classic Reagan. Simple. Intelligible. True. Some people believe he was a moron, incapable of argument or intellectual engagement. A brief perusal through these dozens of talks will put the lie to that. He wrote constantly, and grappled directly and bravely with the main issues of his day. He was a believer in the press and the media as a way to communicate as powerfully as possible ideas that could change lives. In this sense, he was one of the most intellectual presidents in history. He took great pain with words, and spent a lifetime learning how to craft them.

President Ronald Reagan
Several years after graduating from college and while employed as a sports announcer by a radio station in Iowa, Ronald Reagan began taking home-study U.S. Army Extension Courses. He enrolled in the program on Mar. 18, 1935 and by Dec. 1936, had completed 14 courses. He then joined the Army's Enlisted Reserve Corps at Des Moines, Iowa on April 29, 1937 as a private in Troop B, 322d Cavalry. On May 25, 1937 he was appointed a second lieutenant in the Officers' Reserve Corps of the Cavalry and on June 18, 1937, he accepted his officer's commission. Following the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, Lt. Reagan interrupted his acting career and on April 19, 1942, went on active duty. This was not achieved without some difficulty because when Lt. Reagan took his first physical exam, he was not accepted for active duty due to eyesight difficulties. His persistence finally triumphed and he was given another exam which he passed. However, he was classified for limited service only, which permanently denied to him his ambition of serving overseas. His first assignment was at the San Francisco Port of Embarkation, Fort Mason, Cal., as Liaison Officer of the Port and Transportation Office. At this time, the AAF and Warner Brothers Studios were planning a feature motion picture to be entitled "Air Force" and wanted Lt. Reagan for the leading role, so on May 15, 1942, he applied for transfer from the Cavalry to the AAF.

Former President Reagan Turns 90
by Jim Burns
February 6, 2001
(CNSNews.com) - Physically healthy but mentally ailing - and revered more than ever by Americans of all descriptions former President Ronald Reagan turns 90 years old Tuesday.
Only two other American presidents - Herbert Hoover and John Adams have achieved that milestone, and both of them died within a year of their 90th birthdays.
Ronald Reagan faded from the public eye soon after leaving the presidency, when he wrote Americans a letter explaining that he had Alzheimer's Disease. In recent weeks, he fell and broke his hip, but doctors say it is mending nicely.
Just as he has in recent years, the former president is spending a quiet birthday at home with his wife Nancy at their home in Pacific Palisades, California.

JIM LEHRER: Mr. President, welcome. We want to go through and talk about the presidential debates that you've participated in, and also get some general comments. JIM LEHRER: First, 1980 there were two debates. You debated John Anderson, then you debated President Carter. What led up to the decision to debate Anderson by himself? PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN: Well, he was a candidate, as you recall, independent there were three of us, and they wanted a three-way debate, and Carter refused to do that one, and I didn't see any reason why Anderson should be excommunicated. So I said no, I would go forward with it. It became just a two-way debate. JIM LEHRER: How did you feel about that debate? How did you feel you did? Were there any special preparations you did because it was John Anderson? Do you remember? PRESIDENT RONALD REAGAN: No, and I felt that I did all right. The questions were pretty legitimate questions on policies and so forth, and they were answered. I did say that one, he had made some very complimentary remarks at a time about Teddy Kennedy, and I couldn't resist, as we were sitting there waiting for another question, I asked him aloud if he really thought Teddy Kennedy should be president.

A conservative ideologue and political amateur at first, he had difficulty working with the Democratic legislature. As governor he was able to order a hiring freeze on state jobs, but was not able to gain legislative support for lower taxes or for reducing the cost of government. After two years he came to terms with the legislature, learning to listen and to compromise. He also learned how to use television to win support.

TUESDAY, JANUARY 20, 1981 Senator Hatfield, Mr. Chief Justice, Mr. President, Vice President Bush, Vice President Mondale, Senator Baker, Speaker O'Neill, Reverend Moomaw, and my fellow citizens: To a few of us here today, this is a solemn and most momentous occasion; and yet, in the history of our Nation, it is a commonplace occurrence. The orderly transfer of authority as called for in the Constitution routinely takes place as it has for almost two centuries and few of us stop to think how unique we really are. In the eyes of many in the world, this every-4-year ceremony we accept as normal is nothing less than a miracle. Mr. President, I want our fellow citizens to know how much you did to carry on this tradition. By your gracious cooperation in the transition process, you have shown a watching world that we are a united people pledged to maintaining a political system which guarantees individual liberty to a greater degree than any other, and I thank you and your people for all your help in maintaining the continuity which is the bulwark of our Republic. The business of our nation goes forward. These United States are confronted with an economic affliction of great proportions. We suffer from the longest and one of the worst sustained inflations in our national history. It distorts our economic decisions, penalizes thrift, and crushes the struggling young and the fixed- income elderly alike. It threatens to shatter the lives of millions of our people.

Thank you very much. Chancellor Kohl, Governing Mayor Diepgen, ladies and gentlemen: Twenty-four years ago, President John F. And today I, myself, make my second visit to your city. We come to Berlin, we American presidents, because it's our duty to speak, in this place, of freedom. But I must confess, we're drawn here by other things as well: by the feeling of history in this city, more than 500 years older than our own nation; by the beauty of the Grunewald and the Tiergarten; most of all, by your courage and determination. Perhaps the composer Paul Lincke understood something about American presidents. You see, like so many presidents before me, I come here today because wherever I go, whatever I do: Ich hab noch einen Koffer in Berlin. [I still have a suitcase in Berlin.] Our gathering today is being broadcast throughout Western Europe and North America. I understand that it is being seen and heard as well in the East. To those listening throughout Eastern Europe, a special word: Although I cannot be with you, I address my remarks to you just as surely as to those standing here before me. For I join you, as I join your fellow countrymen in the West, in this firm, this unalterable belief: Es gibt nur ein Berlin. [There is only one Berlin.]
