6. Guelph Museums: Black History Exhibit
Guelph museums Black History Exhibit
http://www.museum.guelph.on.ca/religion.htm
Religion and the British Methodist Episcopal Church
T he church was the most important institution in most Black communities. Church leaders were often spokespersons to the larger community. The denominations were usually Baptist or Methodist. Baptist congregations encouraged a democratic participation by the election of their ministers. Black Methodists, coldly received in White congregations, turned to the African Methodist Episcopal church, which entered the colony from the United States in 1838 and by 1840 had organized an Upper Canada Conference. The Conference was instrumental in supplying the church with ministers and sending bishops occasionally to oversee its work. In 1856, feelings arose that reforms had to take place, and an independent British Methodist Episcopal Church was formed.
A British Methodist Episcopal (BME) Church was started in Guelph in 1870, in a frame building on Market Street. Rev. Thomas Jefferson was pastor. The original congregation was comprised of former fugitive slaves from the United States. On September 18, 1880, numerous citizens gathered to witness the laying of the cornerstone of the new stone church on Essex Street. T he 1882-83 Guelph City Directory described the church as a "stone building, in course of completion but sufficiently advanced to enable public services to be held in it; when finished it will have a seating capacity of 300. The estimated cost of the building is $2,000". The BME church offered public services at 11 am and 6:30 pm, as well as a Sabbath School at 3 pm. Prayer meetings were held every Thursday and the Rev. Junius B. Roberts presided over the church's 40 members.

STEWARDS OF THE SACRED: CONCEPTUAL MUSEUM OF RELIGION AND ART
    By Lawrence E. Sullivan
"The Aleph was probably two or three centimeters in diameter, but universal space was contained inside it, with no dimunition in size. Each thing (the glass surface of a mirror, let us say) was infinite things, because I could clearly see it from every point in the cosmos. I saw the populous sea, saw dawn and dusk, saw the multitudes of the Americas, saw a silvery spider web at the center of a black pyramid, saw a broken labyrinth (it was London), saw endless eyes, all very close, studying themselves in me as though in a mirror, saw all the mirrors on the planet (and none of them reflecting me)"
    Jorge Luis Borges, The Aleph
"It is possible to contain all the lands of all the Buddhas and the sentient beings in one atom without shrinking the worlds or expanding the atom"
    Avatamsaka Sutra
In the context of research universities like Harvard, museums create special intellectual spaces for interdisciplinary work on the world's religions. Religions are centered on display, spectacle, and reflection. Museums are crossroads where research, education, and entertainment are all put on display for reflection in revealing ways. Museums are best conceived as contestatory arenas for comparison and dialogue, and as such are a vital part of the environment for research and teaching in the humanities.
The Center for the Study of World Religions (CSWR) at Harvard University has developed a constellation of research initiatives involving religion, the arts, and museums over the past five years. Each initiative is one dimension of a wider long-term project culminating in the design of a conceptual museum of world religions. This ideal "museum" is conceived of as a new kind of institution, one not limited to the display of objects; it is a place for theater, music, dance, film, debate, and symposia, as well exhibitions involving many types of media and material artifacts. The "museum's" mission is to foster understanding of the diversity and richness of the world's religions in a multidisciplinary space for civic and social discourse. This holistic and broad vehicle of culture includes attention to politics, performance, music, the media, economics, the healing arts, the plastic arts, literature, and debate in its exploration of the world's religions.

    http://www.mumi.org/religion/en/
The year 2000: for many, a magically charged temporal threshold. But for others, New Year's celebrations are observed at different times, depending upon the diverse calendars of the great world religions, viz. 1420... 1700... 2056... 5760. There are almost a million people living in Sweden today whose daily lives are strongly affected by religion. Almost every day of the calendar is related to some religious celebration: John the Baptist, who baptized Jesus, is celebrated by the church on Midsummer's Day. On Easter Day, the resurrection of Christ and the victory of life over death are celebrated. Diwali introduces the Hindu New Year, which is one of many religious festivals of light. Sri Guru Granth Sahib is a festival which is celebrated in honor of the sacred scripture of the Sikhs. Katina is one of the main Buddhist festivals and concludes the monks' three-month meditation and lengthy fast. The list of religious celebrations could go on and on. Yet Sweden is one of the world's most secularized countries. How should we learn to live together with our different world-views? How do we exchange conflict and mistrust for dialogue and mutual respect? The material in Everyday Religion was generously provided from the God Has 99 Names
