A reader contributed article by John Amsterdam's restaurants are abundant with indoor and outdoor tables. Nationalities from Brazilian to Uruguayan to Tibetan to French, Dutch, Swiss, Greek, Indonesian, Hindu and many many others serve excellent cuisine. A good complete meal should cost about 12-20 Euro. We especially enjoy the Indonesian delicacies. You can also by French Fries and other snacks on the street. Gracht is the Dutch word for canal and they have plenty of them both major and minor. You can usually follow the Grachts to where you want to go and they provide for a lovely stroll. You might want to stop at the Rembrandt H ouse or the apartment where Anne Frank stayed during WWII.

    Clothing
The bywords for clothing in Israel are casual and comfortable. For evening, the most formal event requires no more than a dark suit for men (with a shirt and tie being much more the norm), and a cocktail dress for women.
Temperatures during the summertime hit the high 90s (38-40c) on a regular basis, so dress sensibly: natural fibers are recommended, and a hat, sunglasses and sunblock are essential. In the evenings, a light jacket or cardigan is a good idea if you're visiting in higher elevations such as Jerusalem.
Late autumn through early spring, plan to "dress like an onion". Layers that can be peeled off (or added back on) as the day or evening progresses are always a good bet.
At all times of the year, bring head coverings for protection against the sun (and the requisite sunglasses and sunblockdon't say we didn't warn you), comfortable walking shoes, and a bathing suit.
PLEASE NOTE: It's imperative to dress moderately if you plan to visit observant areas or religious sites. For women, this usually means a head covering, long sleeves, and a skirt at least mid-calf in length. For men, trousers and a short-sleeved shirt are customary.

    Raymond A Bucko, S.J.

Fr. Bucko first became interested in computers while doing fieldwork on Pine Ridge. His close associate, Fr. David Shields, S. J. was gifted with a computer complete with a modem. The two of them ran up one of the most remarkable phone bills in South Dakota history trying out this new toy. They eventually opened their own computer bulletin board, "Opus Pocus", to both be of service to the people on Pine Ridge who had computer connections and also to cut down their own phone bill. Fr. Bucko took a job at Le Moyne College where he opened another bulletin board, The Erie Canal, this time to be of service to people with HIV - AIDS. He worked with Sr. Mary of The AEGIS Network in distributing vital information concerning prevention and treatment of this disease.
With the advent of the internet, which he candidly admits not to have invented, Fr. Bucko transferred these computing skills to the classroom where he developed techniques in collaborative learning. Fr. Bucko began developing a virtual classroom at Le Moyne College in 1985. The program which operates as a basis for the classroom, BSCW (Basic Support for Cooperative Work) is now used by the sociology and anthropology department at

    http://museums.ncl.ac.uk/wallnet/sen/Religion.htm
Roman Religion Religion was a very important part of Roman life. Romans believed in many gods who controlled their lives and brought them wealth and good luck. Most Roman houses had a special place where the family worshipped. There were three family gods- Janus, god of the doorway; Lar, god of the house and Vesta, goddess of the household fire. The gods were offered food and drinks at the beginning of a meal. Romans were superstitious, and so when they conquered people they sometimes started to worship local gods and often they gave them Latin names. For the army, the most important Roman gods were Jupiter the supreme god, Apollo the sun god and Mars the god of war. Many altars were dedicated to them in the forts. Emperor worship was introduced as a means of encouraging loyalty among the soldiers, who treated the Emperor as a living god. Temples were dedicated to particular gods and built in a variety of styles. The Romans had a strong belief in the supernatural and in curses. They would leave effigies of an afflicted body part, like an ear or a leg, at temples because they believed that the gods would heal them.

    Themes
The Museums of Mayo are involved in the collection, preservation and exhibition of aspects and artefacts of many aspects of our past which, individually and cumulatively, form an invaluable resource in representing and preserving our unique experience for present and future generations. The artefacts displayed in the different institutions reflect various aspects of rural life. Visual aids help to give us some understanding of particularly important themes, such as Rural Economy, Famine, Religion and Local History, and their impact on contemporary rural life, while the focus on Genealogy provides a framework for the detailed researching of individuals and families.
    Rural Economy
Agriculture has been central to the survival of the rural economy throughout Ireland's history. Various factors combined to reduce the holdings of land to the subsistence level that pertained throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth century. However, small-holdings were marked by people's necessity to be as self-sufficient as their means allowed. Both men and women contributed to the operation of the small farm. The men built their dwellings, but women helped with the important tasks of ploughing the land, growing and saving crops, saving turf and tending the farm animals. Women maintained the constant supply of the kitchen garden's supply of vegetables, kept poultry to assist with the family finances, wove and sewed cloth to provide clothes and cooked the meals for the family and farm animals. Families tended to intermarry in small communities and the close relationship of the families fostered an interest in the communal welfare. Meitheals, or groups of able-bodied men and women, combined to help the less well-off, particularly destitute widows, with the necessary seasonal farm work.

Art and culture Museums > Jewish Historical Museum Jewish Historical Museum In 1987, this museum opened in the restored Ashkenazi Synagogue complex in the heart of what was once Amsterdam's thriving Jewish Quarter. It's home to the collection of paintings, decorations, and ceremonial objects confiscated during World War II and patiently restored in the postwar period. The museum focuses on Jewish identity, Jewish religion and culture, and Jewish history in the Netherlands. It presents the community in both good times and bad and provides insights into the Jewish way of life over the centuries. Leave time to appreciate the beauty and size of the buildings themselves, which include the oldest public synagogue in Europe.

Babylonian Talmud Religion, culture and history of the Jews in the Netherlands dominate the museum's permanent collection. A museum route takes you to the various exhibitions that include Contemporary Jewish Identity, Jewish Religious Customs, Social-Economic History of the Jews in Holland, the Jewish Identity after the Holocaust, Torah and Tradition and Israel and Zionism. DUTCH- JEWISH Judaism is essentially an abstract religion. Its focus is the word of Torah and the action that proceeds from this. Many aspects of the religion, which have not been laid down by traditional rabbinical rule, have been borrowed from the surrounding culture. Thus, the architecture of the synagogues and many objects clearly reveal a Dutch influence. Despite their minority position, Jews have made an impact on Dutch society, too. Influential Jews like Spinoza, the bankers family Suasso and Jonas Daniel Meijer have made a lasting impression on Dutch society. In cattle trade, the diamond industry and petty trade, Jews were dominant, because of the restrictions on the professions they were allowed to work in. Especially in Amsterdam, many original Hebrew or Yiddish words have become part of the local dialect.

12/19/2002 - Updated 12:17 PM ET 10 great places to explore religion in artistic detail A world of color: The Mapparium at Boston's Mary Baker Eddy Library is a 30-foot stained-glass globe that visitors can walk through. Looking for more sacred meaning this holiday season? Consider some of the country's religious museums. "Particularly compelling are the ones that tell about religion in the context of culture," says Penelope C. Fletcher , deputy director of Pope John Paul II Cultural Center in Washington, D.C., featuring art exhibits and interactive displays (202-635-5400; www.jp2cc.org ). "A great religious museum should provoke thought about the meaning of life through religious perspective." Here, Fletcher shares her insights about inspiring museums with USA TODAY's Shawn Sell Knights of Columbus Museum, New Haven, Conn. The Knights of Columbus, a fraternal and benevolent society for Roman Catholic men, "was started to help Irish immigrant families. The museum documents the organization's 120-year history in the context of American and world history." www.kofc.org/museum/museum.cfm
