Pet Care Tips:
Taking Care of Reptiles
So you're in love with an iguana named Iggy. He's green, he's scaly, and he . . . lives in a tank in your living room. You need all the information you can get to keep him happy. And close encounters of the scaly kind require thought and planning beyond your average food bowl, water dish, and squeeze toy. Universe in a closet
Two of the basic requirements in creating a home for your reptilian pal are heat and a reptile-friendly container. Aquariums, custom cages, and boxes of the home-built type are all good places for your green friend to call home. The easiest (and cheapest) lining for the cages of many reptiles is newspaper-it's easy to change and easy to tell when it's wet. Turtles need a more humid lining, such as soil mixed with peat moss. Geckos will like smooth aquarium stones in the bottom of the cage. Snakes will appreciate rocks to facilitate shedding, and iguanas and snakes both will like a hardwood driftwood branch for climbing. All linings should be changed regularly, with feces removed often. "Hide boxes" (which function exactly as their name implies) provide a secure, out-of-sight place for rest and relaxation in your reptile's home. A hide box should be a shallow plastic container with a hole cut in the side and filled with one to two inches (depending on your friend's size) of damp vermiculite or moss. Hide boxes can double as nesting areas for some species-your veterinarian can tell you whether you'll need one for yours.

The Right Pet for You
Reptiles like snakes and iguanas may be interesting and unusual, but they are very difficult and expensive to look after correctly, and are really not at all suitable as domestic pets. Before getting any pet, you should think very hard about whether you can provide everything it needs.
What do Reptiles need?
A great deal of space. A baby iguana, for example, may seem small, but can grow to nearly one and a half metres long. A rock python can reach five metres in length. As reptiles grow, they need more and more space. To be fed with exactly the right kind of food. You may have to obtain this from a specialist supplier, and the reptile's diet could include insects or rodents. A secure enclosure. A specially built home, in which you need to recreate the reptile's natural environment as closely as possible. This includes controlling the levels and quality of light, temperature and humidity in accordance with the animal's needs.

WATER TURTLE CARE SHEET
BY VALERIE HAECKY
Note: This care sheet is put together from many sources: books, other care sheets, several people's personal experiences. Note: For box turtles, refer to the box turtle care sheet. For mud turtles, see the mud turtle notes below. For softshells, see the notes on softshells below.
Is A Turtle The Right Pet For You?
Of course, if you pick up a turtle from the road, or a friend drops of a turtle at your house, or you end up with a turtle unexpectedly for some other reason, this question is almost moot. But only almost. If you have been blessed with a turtle, and you decide you cannot fulfill all its needs for whatever reasons, you may want to consider adopting out. Most herp societies have adoption programs. * Turtles are not Ninja Turtles. They will not perform tricks, talk, or perform heroic deeds. They don't eat pizza either. Some turtles like to have their head or shells stroked, but most of them don't like to be held or touched. Water turtles are primarily a look-at pet. They will learn to recognize you, though; they will lose their fear; and they will eat from your fingers (sometimes including your fingers :-) * Turtles live 40 and more years. Are you willing to take on a long term commitment? Or if you think you will only have the turtle for some time, are you willing to look for a good new home for it when you cannot keep it any longer?

Reptiles are not one size fits all. These creatures have an enormous range of needs and require specifically tailored habitats and care. ARE YOU READY? It's a big commitment. Depending on the species, lizards can live up to 20 years; snakes up to 50 years; Turtles and tortoises can live to 100 years or more!
In addition to the aquarium or enclosure for your pet, you will need to provide special heating and lighting, essential furnishings, food and nutritional supplements; possibly more. Most reptiles require set-ups that can cost you $250.to $1000. which is a lot for a $10. pet. Please be sure you are able and willing to make the financial investment before you decide on a pet reptile.
Do you have a vet in your area that treats exotic animals? They can be hard to find in some areas. Is your pet legal to own in your state, city, county? Just because you can find them in the pet store does not mean that they are legal to own.
Unfortunately, my reptile expertise in limited to turtles at this time. I am always researching and learning and will update these pages accordingly, but in the meantime, scroll down for the turtle pages or visit these other great pages.
