    By Mary Cay Brass, 1999.
Mary Cay Brass writes: "In 1976 I went to the former Yugoslavia for two and a half years on a Fulbright scholarship in ethnomusicology. During the past 9 years of violence in this area, I have been involved with many groups in this country and abroad, teaching the wonderful music of these peoples. Much of the material on this recording I collected while living in Yugoslavia. Other songs I have learned from commercial recordings or from Bosnian refugees living in Croatia... Access to music from these areas has become more and more difficult. Our aim is to share our love of these songs with others through this recording and its companion book of transcriptions and translations."

    Culture Reflected in Irish Restrooms
Traveling in Ireland was quite an experience, especially when using public restrooms. The urinals were not so much individual urinals as much as an entire wall with drains at the floor. The heavy drinking, be it alchoholic or not, of the society is seen in this common sense method of dealing with mass amounts of excreted liquids.
On a side note, every bathroom also had condom dispensers, selling them in the same machine as candy and toothpaste. I thought this was honest considering America's method of sticking them in the back corner of CVS Republic of Georgia
The worst toilets I've encountered were in the Republic of Georgia. A magnificent country full of the most wonderful, fun people, grand architecture, beautiful music and outstanding food-BUT...the toilets were abysmal. The stench makes one vomatose. (Tbilisi; Kutaisi; Goordjahni)
My question for you and the reason for my writing:
Has any device been invented for travelers to use when using these vile facilities that is capable of quelling the stench? Please do not say for one to put perfume on the wrist or such as that. NOTHING works. Surely with all the people traveling, someone would have invented something to fix this problem. Or perhaps you could throw it out to the world at large as a challenge!

    http://www.mapzones.com/world/europe/georgia/cultureindex.php
Country Info Georgia Introduction Georgia General Data Georgia Maps Georgia Culture ... Georgia Time and Date Georgia Culture Back to Top Georgia is a land of ancient culture, with a literary tradition that dates to the 5th century AD. Kolkhida (Colchis) early housed a school of higher rhetoric in which Greeks as well as Georgians studied. By the 12th century, academies in Ikalto and Gelati, the first medieval higher-education centres, disseminated a wide range of knowledge. The national genius was demonstrated most clearly in Vepkhis-tqarsani (The Knight in the Panther's Skin), the epic masterpiece of the 12th-century poet Shota Rustaveli. Major figures in later Georgian literary history include a famed 18th-century writer, Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani, and the novelist, poet, and dramatist Ilia Chavchavadze. The 19th-century playwright Giorgi Eristavi is regarded as the founder of the modern Georgian theatre. Among other prominent prerevolutionary authors were the lyric poet Akaki Tsereteli; Alexander Qazbegi, novelist of the Caucasus; and the nature poet Vazha Pshavela. The novelist Mikhail Javakhishvili and the poet Titsian Tabidze were executed during the Stalin era, and the poet Paolo Iashvili was censured by the government and committed suicide. Giorgi Leonidze and Galaktion Tabidze were well-known poets, and Konstantin Gamsakhurdia was celebrated for his historical novels. The ancient culture of the republic is reflected in the large number of architectural monuments, including many monasteries and churches; indeed, Georgian architecture (with Armenian) played a considerable role in the development of the Byzantine style. Georgia has a long tradition of fine metalwork. Bronze, gold, and silver objects of a high technical and aesthetic standard have been recovered from tombs of the 1st and 2nd millennia BC. Between the 10th and 13th centuries AD, Georgian goldsmiths produced masterpieces of cloisonné enamel and repoussé work, notably icons, crosses, and jewelry.

    http://www.abkhazia.org/home_def.html
The Republic of Abkhazia covers 3,300 square miles between the eastern shores of the Black Sea and the crestline of the main Caucasus range; from the rivers Psou (in the North) and Ingur (In the south). To the north, Abkhazia is bordered by Russia and to the south by the Georgian provinces of Svanetia and Mingrelia. Around 74% of the territory is mountains or mountain approaches. The coastal valleys are humid and subtropical. At higher altitudes the weather ranges from moderately cold to such freezing temperatures that the snow never melts. The relatively small distance between seashore and mountains lends Abkhazia a strikingly contrasting landscape. The area was best known by non-Abkhazia for its prime resorts for vacationers from all over the Soviet Union, as well as well as for its major cash crops of tea, tobacco and citrus fruits. There are two cities: the capital Sukhum, with a population of more than 100,000, and Tkwarchal, an industrial center. There are three urban resorts; Gagra, Gudauta, and Ochamchira; two rural spas : Pitsunda, and Novy Afon; and 575 villages. The Abkhazian language belongs to the northwest Caucasian family spoken by only a few other people in the world: the Abazins (or Abaza), Adyghey, Kabardians and Circassians, all of whom live in the north Caucasus. Historically these people and other related groups in the North Caucasus maintained close ties until they were divided by Soviet colonial policy.
