Rhinoceros
Line art (1.7 K image) Line art (2.3 K image) Line art (7.0 K image) [US FWS Line Art by Robert Savannah] Prehistoric rhinoceroses, some larger than elephants, some the size of wolves, were found on every continent except South America and Australia. Today, there are five species of rhino: two African species and three Asian. The African species are the white, or square-lipped, and the black rhinos. Both species have two horns. Of the Asian species, the Indian and the Javan each have a single horn, while the Sumatran rhino has two. The word rhinoceros means "horn-nosed," and rhinos use their horns for several purposes. They use them to shovel the ground for mineral salt; to fight over territory or a female, or during courtship; and to defend themselves and their young against lions, tigers and hyenas. Like buffalos and elephants, rhinos are very near-sighted. They can only see clearly up to about 30 feet away. The lateral placement of their eyes causes them to turn their heads from side to side to see straight ahead. Rhinos' extremely acute senses of hearing and smell compensate for their poor eyesight. Rhinos are able to pinpoint the origin of a sound and charge at it. They use their highly developed sense of smell to identify other rhinos, keep track of their young and identify predators.

Endangered Species R estoring endangered and threatened species to a secure status in the wild is a key objective of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The Endangered Species web site has information on threatened and endangered wildlife and plants and lists of threatened and endangered species by state.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the NOAA Fisheries Service (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration National Marine Fisheries Service) Office of Protected Resources work together to protect species listed as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. We implement programs and regulations for terrestrial and freshwater species, while NOAA Fisheries is charged with marine and anadromous species. (back to top)

be commercially traded as live specimens or wildlife products because they are endangeredor threatened. The rhinoceros and Tiger Conservation Act of 1994.
http://www.electriceggplant.com/theinsite/earth/earth_es_laws.html
Animals/Fish/Birds/Plants Protecting Endangered Species What is the problem? Animals and plants that are having trouble surviving in today's world are classified as either endangered or threatened.
  • Endangered Species - Those animals or plants with so few individual survivors that the species could soon become extinct over all or most of its natural range. (Examples include: the Whopping Crane in North America, the Giant Panda, the California Condor, the Snow Leopard and the Black Rhino.)
Threatened Species - Those animals or plants still abundant in their natural range but declining in numbers and likely to become endangered. (Examples are: the Bald Eagle, the Grizzly Bear and the American Alligator.)
What's being done? Since "extinct" is forever, biologists and environmentalists are working together to manage and protect biodiversity (the ability of many different species to thrive within a particular region). Here are three ways they do it:
  • Wildlife Management Approach - manages game species for sustained yield by using laws to regulate hunting, establishing harvest quotas, developing population management plans and using international treaties to protect migrating game species such as water fowl.
Ecosystem Approach - aims to preserve balanced populations of species in their native habitats, establish legally protected wilderness areas and wildlife reserves and eliminate alien species.

Description:
Imagine having horns to fight with your sister. That is what a Javan rhinoceros can do. But recently these big creatures have become endangered.
This species is commonly known as the Javan rhinoceros. To scientists it is the rhinoceros sondaicus. It gives birth to live young so therefore it is a mammal. The Javan rhinoceros is a very large animal. It is 210 to 400 centimeters long. They are usually 110 to 180 centimeters tall and weigh 2 to 3.5 tons. Their skin is usually dark gray and very wrinkled. This particular species usually has one horn that is up to ten inches long. This animal is usually solitary. They have developed a keen sense of hearing and smelling. Their Their horn could poke a sizable hole in a car door.
Environment:
This animal's habitat is usually wet and rainy. It lives in tropical rain forests covering parts of Indonesia and Vietnam. These extraordinary creatures spend almost half their time eating. The Javan rhinoceros has habits that are very peculiar. This animal's habits include wallowing in mud, fighting with others, and finding food for themselves. Their diet consists of shoots, twigs, young foliage, grass, and reeds. Although they are big, a Javan rhinoceros can gallop at speeds ranging from 21 to 35 miles an hour. They can drink 15 to 25 gallons of water a day.

    ACAP: Asian Conservation Awareness Programme
An international education campaign, which seeks to raise awareness of endangered species in order to reduce the demand for luxury foods, medicines, trophies, and tourist souvenirs that contribute to the demise in populations. Statistical details, and information about the threats and trade in body parts are provided on specific creatures, including tigers, bears, marine turtles, rhinos, and elephants. There is also a section on Chinese Medicine, as well as news articles, and related links.
