Student-Athletes Participate in School Tour Local youth become college students for a day with a visit to the URI campus. May 17, 2001 KINGSTON, R.I. - URI student-athletes were part of campus tours hosted by RHODY TALK, a speaker's bureau designed to provide outreach to the community. The objective of RHODY TALK is to provide positive direction for the youth of our community. RHODY TALK founder Leo DiMaio and his assistant Preston Murphy, former URI men's basketball star, work closely with the URI Athletic Department to involve URI student-athletes in the community. The student-athletes serve as excellent role models for youth. They speak to students about the importance of an education, goal setting, self-esteem and image building. Recently, children from the Samuel W. Bridgham Middle School in Providence and children from the Stonehill Elementary School in Cranston were each provided with a tour of the URI campus. This included visiting classrooms, the library, the Memorial Union, a dormitory, and having lunch in the dining hall. The visit concluded with a tour of the athletic facilities and an opportunity to meet Rhody, the URI mascot, and several URI student-athletes. The student-athletes spoke to the students about their sport and about the importance of education and then answered their questions. Participating in the event were URI women's soccer player Catherine Zanni; gymnast Marissa Medal; men's basketball player Howard Smith; and women's basketball player Hillary Goodrich.

RISD today is very different than what its founders probably imagined; it reflects a past that has seen the institution evolve over time from a small, locally based institution to one that is not only larger, but simultaneously international and community-centered in its reach. CE students are therefore the beneficiaries of 125 years of achievement. Honoring this history of truly extraordinary accomplishments, we look forward to what the future will bring If you prefer a printed version of the information on this site, follow this link to request a CE catalog

Cutting or Gutting Services to Blind Children?
by Barbara Cheadle Barbara Cheadle From the Editor: Barbara Cheadle is the president of the National Organization of Parents of Blind Children. The following article appeared in Volume 21, No. 2 of Future Reflections , the quarterly publication of the organization. Here it is: Cutting or gutting services is the question uppermost in the minds of over 150 families of blind and visually impaired children in Rhode Island. So far no one is coming forward with any answers. Many states across our nation (Rhode Island among them) are struggling with revenue shortfalls and other budget problems. A weakened economy has compelled several state governors to order across-the-board cuts in state government spending. In such circumstances it isn't uncommon for services to blind children to take a proportional hit. In some states this means budget cuts to the state-funded schools for the blind. In a few states (such as New Jersey) children's services provided by state-funded commissions for the blind suffer cutbacks as well. Never a completely independent department with its own budget and dedicated administration, the VSP program office is currently located on the campus of the Rhode Island School for the Deaf, and, as of September of 2001, it is administered by the superintendent of the Rhode Island School for the Deaf. Despite these limitations there has been much to commend the Rhode Island Vision Services Program since its inception.

Future Reflections Summer/Fall, 2002 back next contents Rhode Island Department of Education: Cutting or Gutting Services to Blind Children? This is the question uppermost in the minds of over 150 families of blind and visually impaired children in Rhode Island. And so far no one is coming forward with any answers. Many states across our nation (Rhode Island among them) are struggling with revenue shortfalls and other budget problems. A weakened economy has compelled several state governors to order across-the-board cuts in state government spending. In such circumstances it isn’t uncommon for services to blind children to take a proportional hit. In some states this means budget cuts to the state-funded schools for the blind. In a few states (such as New Jersey) children’s services provided by state-funded commissions for the blind suffer cutbacks as well. None of this is pleasant, but neither is it unexpected, nor, providing that the programs had reasonable funding in the first place, is it grossly unfair. This is not to say that parents and blind advocates should take such cuts meekly—only that cycles of fat times and lean times are normal, and all must work together to minimize the impact of the lean times. But making cuts in a program is one thing; gutting it is another. A trimmed rose bush can grow back; a gutted fish is a goner.

Maximum Security (MAX) once served as the prison for both awaiting trial and sentenced inmates. As the sentenced population grew and the needs of the prison system changed, other facilities were added. Surrounded by a wall with five observation towers, this facility is broken down into six housing areas with one segregation unit. The population is comprised of inmates serving long sentences for a variety of offenses along with inmates serving shorter sentences who have been transferred to MAX from other facilities for serious discipline and/or behavioral problems.
