April 9, 2003 Governor Carcieri is working to create more and better jobs for all Rhode Islanders, using three guiding principles. 1 - Turn ideas into jobs. This means using limited state support to grow new businesses through such efforts as the Slater Centers for Excellence, where seasoned business professionals mentor entrepreneurs who have good ideas. In the new budget for fiscal year 2004 the Governor proposes to double the investment in the Slater Centers from $2.5 million to $5 million to spur additional development. In addition, the budget calls for increased support for research at the University of Rhode Island. This state ranks last in the nation for public college and university spending on research and development. The proposed URI Center for Biotechnology and Molecular Biosciences will be available to students from all state-run institutions of higher education (or businesses seeking employee training), preparing them for careers in these growing industries. Companion bills before the legislature will allow public university researchers here, like those in other states, to benefit from the profits their work makes possible.

Links News What's New Press Releases Newsletter National Board News Job-Embedded Professional Development - Lesson Study Posted Wednesday, August 14, 2002 by RITLC The TLC received supplemental funds to research effective job-embedded professional development practices and design a training and support system for Rhode Island educators implementing those practices. We are focusing our efforts on action research (see related article on the CELSI initiative) and lesson study. During the summer of 2002, the I-Plan fellows and the executive director of the TLC will work on a lesson study training and support program and a related tool kit for trainers to use as they train groups of teachers to conduct lesson study. Beginning in the fall, therefore, we will have the capacity to train and support educators in a variety of contexts to conduct lesson study. In order to maximize effectiveness, we are currently working to form partnerships with higher education, teacher organizations, and technology initiatives to design and implement the program. More details will be forthcoming.
