There is much more to robotics education than just teaching about robots. Students at all grade levels are fascinated with robots; and educators have found that teaching with robots provides a new and exciting way to interest and motivate their students. Robots are finding their way into the classroom to help teach science, math, mechanics, teamwork and even management skills. We have established the Office of Robotics Education as a way to help educators, students and parents with interests in robotics education get connected. We hope this webpage will serve as a helpful launching point. Tucker Balch and Scott Thayer

Biomachines and Robotics Engineering in Biosystems Engineering
W hat is B iomachines and R obotics E ngineering?
B iological Engineering, in general, is the "engineering of living things." This fast growing discipline applies engineering principles to solve problems associated with biologically based systems. Biomachines and Robotics Engineering focuses on the design of machines for the challenging world of biological products. This requires an understanding of biology and the unique characteristics that requires special designs. Robotics are being used increasingly more for transplanting, harvesting and processing.
W here do B iomachines and R obotics E ngineers work?
There are many challenging problems to be solved in the biological industry as a whole. Engineering graduates have obtained jobs in:
design and selling of machinery for
agricultural
food production
fisheries
aquacultural facilities
implementation of robots for biological applications
management positions in companies that produce and use machines in the biological industries.

T he Department of Electronic Engineering invites groups of students to come to our labs and partake in a ' Robotics Engineering Design Workshop ' Students are grouped in pairs and each given a small Lego Mindstorm's robot and microprocessor to programme. The object for the students is to learn to programme the robot to navigate a small maze in the fastest time possible. The group that builds the fastest and cleverest robot wins a prize. The students can make use of light and touch sensors and whatever else they can think of in order to solve the problem.
