CALIFORNIA'S ENDLESS SUMMER
Since 1983, Vertical Adventures has been Southern California's rock climbing leader, setting a standard of professionalism with our low student to instructor ratios, excellent safety record, and highly qualified guides. Our program is offered year-round. From September through May our courses are held at Joshua Tree National Park , located in the high desert north of Palm Springs. One of America's most popular climbing areas, with over 5000 routes to choose from, Joshua Tree is the best site in the country for rock climbing in the winter season. In June, July and August our classes are held at Suicide Rock , located in the cool pine forest above the town of Idyllwild, in the San Jacinto mountains. We also offer multi-pitch guided climbs of Idyllwild's Tahquitz Rock, which at 1,000 feet high is Southern California's tallest rock formation. Summer temperatures are generally too hot for rock climbing at Joshua Tree.

About these Pages
The primary purposes of these pages are to:
  • Serve as a basic introduction to Squamish area climbing Provide current information on climber related issues around Squamish Serve as a repository for information that may not be included in standard references - e.g. trip reports, history, photos, extended beta, etc. Document new route activity (routes not covered by current guidebooks)
Unfortunately, things are far from complete. Between work commitments, and actually going climbing, there isn't enough time in the day to keep everything up-to-date. If there's some information you'd like to share, or you have some content you want to submit , please do so! Also, this isn't a guidebook, although some sections may look like just that. Doing all the scanning, graphics manipulation, documentation etc. to produce a real online guidebook is beyond our willingness to invest time, and the existing print guidebooks are already very good. However, one of our intentions is to eventually have a more or less complete list of the climbs in the area, crosslinked to information about each climb that is not in current guidebooks, such as topos, bolt status and history. The current definitive area guidebooks are both by Kevin McLane:

Since its inception in 1998 for sharing photos for Bangkok climbers the site has grown immeasurably. Over time the focus inevitably has shifted to Krabi and the south of Thailand. However, the aim of the site is to provide climbing information for the whole of Thailand and SE Asia. It is written and maintained out of Bangkok on an irregular basis in between the demands of a full time job and the never-ending task of trying to climb harder. As the site has grown, the ability to answer individual queries has decreased. Summer 2002 saw the introduction of the Climbing in Thailand Forum for this purpose and for the climbing community to share information with each other. It is the most active area of the site and a must read for visitors

About climbing in Malta Introductory sessions Guiding excursions Rock climbing courses ... Links Malta is the ideal place for a rock climbing holiday. Smack in the middle of the blue Mediterranean just 60 miles south of Sicily, Malta has it all - sun, sea, sand and yep, even rock! Rock climbing in Malta is possible the whole year through. Whilst Maltese climbers are still doing it outdoors, their European counterparts, forced by the cold and wet winters, are compelled to continue their beloved sport at indoor climbing gyms. There are over 1,200 rock routes (climbs) in all the three islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino (Malta is an archipelago). All this in just a span of 315 square kilometers (122 sq. miles). So one is really spoilt for choice! And there is plenty of virgin rock still waiting to be conquered. So if you`re in Malta on business, on a conference, studying or simply on holiday, or you actually live here, why not spend a day or two on Maltese rock? Or you might want to make a rock climbing holiday out of it, or combine it with what the rest of wonderful Malta has to offer. Whether you`re a complete beginner at rock climbing, or if you have only climbed indoors, or you would like to improve your rock skills, we will tailor-make your needs. And if you`re climbing or abseiling on the cliffs, over the shimmering blue sea or climbing inland in the gorgeous Maltese valleys, Malta has the quality of rock climbing that is worth a visit!

http://www.alumni.caltech.edu/~sedwards/climbing/
T HE SPORT of free climbing-climbing rocks using equipment for safety only-has grown very popular: hundreds of thousands of people practice the sport in the U.S. alone. Its popularity has grown in part because of advances in climbing equipment that make climbing safer.
These pages discuss the sport of free climbing-rock climbing using equipment for safety only. The sport presents a physical and mental challenge with minimal danger. Because of the potential for serious injury, much specialized safety equipment has been devised, making it a very safe sport in most cases. Detailed knowledge of safety equipment is crucial for safe climbing, however, and requires an attention to detail absent in many other sports.
These pages describe some of the safety equipment used in free climbing and two common techniques for using it. In one technique, top-roping, a rope from the top of the climb always holds the climber, making most slips harmless. In the other technique, lead climbing, the climber attaches the rope to the rock at points along the climb. This is not as safe, it allows more routes to be climbed.
These pages also describe how to get started in the sport. Finding a place to climb is easily done with one of the many available guidebooks. How to use equipment safely is best learned from an experienced climber, although some books are available.

37. Techniques
rock climbing Equipment and Techniques, More often, the leader will hitthe rock on the way downa common cause of climbing injuries.
http://www.alumni.caltech.edu/~sedwards/climbing/techniques.html
T HIS PAGE DESCRIBES two ways of using ropes and equipment to climb safely. It also describes how to descend after climbing. Details about hand placement, foot placement, balance, and other technical climbing techniques are not described here.
Top-Roping and Belaying
In top-roping, a rope from the top of the climb always holds the climber, making most slips off the climb harmless. As shown above, the climber is attached to one end of the rope, the middle is passed through an anchor at the top of the climb, and the other end is held by the belayer.
The anchor at the top of the climb is assembled from loops of webbing connected to carabiners attached securely to the rock. The rope is passed through some of the carabiners, and the others are attached to either pieces of protection, wedged into a convenient crack, or bolts, which other climbers have drilled into the rock.
The anchor's carabiners with the rope passing through are suspended below the top of the climb to prevent the rope from rubbing. When bolts or protection are far from the top of the climb, substantial lengths of webbing are needed to place the carabiners correctly.
Not all climbs can be top-roped because of two requirements:
  • There must be a safe way to the top to set the anchor before the climber starts. Most popular top-roped climbs have an easy way to hike to the top.
