FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STATEWIDE Frankfort, Ky. (July 27, 2001) – Gov. Paul Patton announced today that 32 projects will be funded with money from the federal Recreational Trails Program (RTP). The Kentucky Department for Local Government (DLG) administers the Recreational Trails Program in Kentucky, which is designed to create public trails for recreational purposes, such as walking, jogging, hiking, and mountain biking. Gov. Patton said, “Providing recreational opportunities to Kentuckians is important to our general health and well being; it improves our quality of life. I’m delighted that many of our communities go after this kind of funding; it shows that local folks care about themselves and their communities.” DLG Commissioner Jody Lassiter says that the department received 57 applications for funding, and encourages those communities that did not receive funding to re-apply, and those who did not apply, to begin the application process. “This program, like other DLG-administered grant programs, is extremely competitive. But for all the hard work communities do in putting an application together, the pay off is definitely worth it.”

THE WARREN SENTINEL Article date: November 18, 1999 From toxic sludge to roller-blading— Avtex awaits rebirth as recreational space The most vivid reminder of Avtex in the conservancy area is its smell. The rotten-egg smell is sulfur coupled with the dustiness of fly ash. By Teresa Brumback Atop Avtex’s "Fly ash Mountain," overlooking stagnant pools of poisonous water alongside the Shenandoah River, a small group of officials pondered hiking, biking trails, and a canoe launching area at the site. Roughly 125 acres of the scarred and tainted terrain on the river flood plain at Avtex has been set aside as recreation/conservancy space, according to U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region III spokesman Richard Kuhn. Along with the tainted ponds and Fly Ash Mountain — a 75 foot tall pile of coal dust — the most vivid reminder of Avtex in the conservancy area is its smell. The rotten-egg is sulfur coupled with the dustiness of fly ash, he said. Front Royal officials and media representatives were invited to tour the spot with EPA officials during a cold and blustery Monday afternoon.

The Stone Clinic's Dry Land Pro Ski Training Camp is the top off-season training program for professional ski racers. Set in San Francisco, California, the camp offers a unique opportunity for pro skiers to train in valuable physical and mental conditioning programs led by world renowned professionals and Olympians. This week-long program is designed to enhance the skiers' performance in competition, to teach techniques to help avoid injury in this challenging sport, and to help injured athletes regain strength and agility for the upcoming ski season. Skiers graduate from The Stone Clinic's camp with the mental and physical edge it takes to tackle the upcoming season and perform in competition. The camp utilizes several facilities and natural settings in San Francisco, including The Stone Clinic, The San Francisco Bay Club, The Presidio, Marina Green, and the arduous Marin Headlands. Competitive alpine ski racing is a sport that exerts intense and constant forces on the body due to the difficult terrain and high speeds of competition. The sport calls for expert strength, balance, agility, flexibility and muscle control. Mental conditioning is also crucial in helping skiers manage their often grueling race schedules. In his years as an orthopaedic surgeon for the U.S. Ski Team and U.S. Pro Ski Tour, the camp's founder, Kevin R. Stone, M.D., has stressed the importance of athletes' mental and physical condition before the ski season.

New York City Issues Preliminary Report on Recreational Use of Water Supply Lands The New York City Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) recently submitted a report entitled "Preliminary Recreational Use Review" to the Watershed Protection and Partnership Council, DEP Commissioner Joel A. Miele Sr., P.E., announced today. The report was developed in accordance with the New York City Watershed Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), which calls for the City "to undertake both preliminary and comprehensive reviews of existing and potential recreational uses on currently owned City property." "This preliminary report is the most comprehensive study ever undertaken on recreational use of New York City's watershed lands," said Commissioner Miele, "and it represents the culmination of a tremendous amount of cooperative work by DEP staff and many interested organizations and individuals. It makes available for the first time a wide-ranging review of the City's holdings, which serve to provide some of the highest quality water in the world while accommodating exceptional recreational opportunities for the public." The report includes an extensive overview of the historical and existing recreational uses of City water supply lands in the Catskill and Delaware Watersheds, both east and west of the Hudson River. Through DEP's existing permit and license system, fishing, and boating for the purpose of fishing have been allowed historically on all lakes and reservoirs already in the water supply system and hunting is approved on sections of currently-owned lands around the Cannonsville Reservoir. Other activities, such as walking, bird watching, and roller-blading, are allowed in smaller designated areas and will continue under the preliminary decisions outlined in the report.
