Sports and Recreation
Outdoor Recreation
"Adventure sports" such as surfing, scuba diving, and sailboarding are gaining popularity around the island as a result of interest generated by classes, rental shops, and clubs. Even gutsier activities such as paragliding and bungee jumping are also attracting brave souls not scared off by the danger or expense. A less thrilling but equally trendy sport that has become a lure to children and adults alike is roller blading. People, particularly children, wearing roller blades and skating to their heart's content is now a common scene in parks and playgrounds. A variety of fishing activities have also gained in popularity. In addition to seaside fishing, there are also many private ponds where people can fish for a small fee. Sea parks and aquariums have also been set up around the island in Kenting, Taipei, and Penghu. The Council of Agriculture has selected 50 qualified counties and cities around the island to carry the "one county, one recreational farm" project, which is aimed at uniting ecology, scenery, livelihood, agricultural development, and community culture. (Photo by Chen Yi-yu) Organized recreational activities are offered all year round by groups like the China Youth Corps ¤¤°ê«C¦~±Ï°ê¹Î. On weekends and holidays and during summer and winter vacations, the corps offers young people diverse outdoor activities like parachuting, rafting, skiing, and mountaineering. Each year it also organizes mock military exercises, back country hiking and camping, talent camps, and safari-style adventures for teenagers and young adults alike. For those who prefer indoor activities, the corps arranges arts and craft courses, such as guitar workshops, knitting courses, and painting classes. There are also self-improvement programs, including management courses, vocational workshops, and psychological counseling.

PIER 4 PARK
A total of $2.2 million has been invested in the redevelopment of Pier 4 Park featuring an interactive water play area, looking out pier, sand beach, washroom building, parking lot, shoreline enhancement, landscaping, and extensive pedestrian and bicycle linkage to the surrounding harbourfront precinct. An 80 foot decommissioned tugboat serves as the centre piece of an interactive water play area and forms the active focal point for Pier 4 park. The tugboat offers unique opportunities for imaginative play which will ignite any child's imagination. A dramatically curved lookout pier is another exciting feature. This elevated wooden pier includes a protected sun shelter, strategically located benches, and offers visitors remarkable views of the surrounding marinas and parkland. The project also entailed the relocation and renovation of an historic building constructed in 1870. The building houses accessible public washrooms and public conference room. The lower level and an outside dry sail storage compound is used by the Hamilton Bay Sailing Club. Car parking is available for 55 cars. Landscaping consists of manicured areas of sod and shrubbery with extensive use of native plant material. Some existing trees were preserved and over 100 new trees have been planted. All visitors can enjoy safe accessibility to the enhanced shoreline and a small beach near the tugboat feature. Pedestrian and bicycle pathways provide linkages with the surrounding marinas and Bayfront Park. These linkages maximize the visitor's experience and participation in a range of activities such as walking, cycling, roller blading, fishing and recreational boating.

Theme Exemplary Quotes Satisfied with Park District facilities and programs "Very good park board. What wasn't available for my two older kids is now available for younger kids." "Good job with the slide and golf courses and Ulland Park." "The Park District has been doing a good job of offering a variety of activities and facilities for people of Grand Forks. Continuing to do so will help make our city a good place to live and draw new residents to Grand Forks. This in turn will provide additional funds to expand activities and facilities." "We have lived in the area for 1 1/2 years. When we moved here, we were impressed with the amount of parks and recreational activities GF has." Need for teen/youth activities "We must keep the youth of Grand Forks here - they are our future. As young kids grow and don't want to go with their families, we have to make sure that all areas of the city, not just the south end, have access to safe recreational areas, preferably indoors in the winter." "Need more recreation opportunities (programs and facilities) for teenagers. Need more indoor recreation

There is a full compliment of recreational options for active children and our vigorous guests, all within an easy walk of the beach and the cottages. Walking down the Beachwalk boardwalk in the Spring is rather like opening an unexpected present. What lies beyond the ecological wrapping and beautiful flowered bow is the beach that changes in its size and shape with each season. Summer brings a wide array of outdoor activities, but we also offer some appealing ways to do nothing at all. Relax on the porch, retire to the pool, lounge on the beach with a good book, unwind with a leisurely stroll around the historic duneland, or soak up the spectacular sunsets over Lake Michigan and linger on the silvery sand as the lake turns inky blue against the starlit night. Swimming season may be just about over for most people but at Beachwalk the beach season is still going strong. The heated pool or warmer waters of Lake Kai offer swimming options long after Lake Michigan's waters are too chilly for your toes. Enjoy bird watching as hundreds of birds, rarely seen in the midwest, migrate south and converge in the area of Beachwalk. The colors of fall are as spectacular here as in upper Michigan. And for those football fans, Beachwalk is ideal for "football weekends"

Local Community Resources to Enhance Activities
Contributed by Kim Davis
Communities offer an array of opportunities for all of us to become involved in recreational activities and to develop relationships with others. Families of people with disabilities may need to fully investigate as many options as possible for recreational outlets. The first step is to identify the interests of the person you are supporting. From there, begin to explore the community for various organizations or associations which match that interest and begin to attend their meetings. Some of these resources may not be typically associated with people with disabilities. The following lists will hopefully trigger creative thinking regarding ways in which to access and utilize community resources. The lists are by no means complete, but present some ideas about where to go to connect with your community regarding the varied interests of the individuals you are supporting. Groups: Organizations: Business: Chamber of Commerce, Neighborhood business associations, Trade groups Charitable: Red Cross, Cancer Society, United Way, Big Brothers, Big Sisters

Welcome to the Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries Website The Friends of Alum Creek and Tributaries (F.A.C.T.) is a local organization within the Columbus area. Mission Statement: To forge a better understanding of and appreciation for the role waterways play in our environment, resulting in their long-term protection and enhancement. Components of a Successful Greenway
G reenways integrate a variety of objectives. These include alternative transportation, active and passive recreation, water quality enhancement, and habitat preservation. An effective greenway also provides community and regional identity; and can provide open space for linking passive recreational activities such as hiking, jogging, bird watching, biking and picnicking. Greenways also provide shelter that is critical for species survival, protect the beauty of natural landscapes, and preserve streams and wetlands in their natural state (MORPC 1997). The Franklin County Greenways Plan identifies six components of a successful greenway. Alum Creek provides all of the elements of a multi-objective greenway. Enhances Community Identity Riverfronts and stream corridors are geographic features that are unique to each area, and can provide a sense of place and identity to the region (MORPC 1997).

54. No Greater Peace Exists Then That Of The Road Gliding Away From
Faithful to my new hobby I went roller blading with my best friend everyday. The most commonly used one of these is the recreational skate.
http://web.nwe.ufl.edu/~mnorcia/f01/mkramer/rollerbladerep.html
Six different types of skates and skaters exist:
The most commonly used one of these is the recreational skate. These are typically designed with a plastic boot to hold the ankle firmly and have wheels that allow a large degree of control. These are the ones I prefer to use.
The second type is the hockey skate. These are constructed like ice-hockey skates. They are made of stitched leather and they lace up for a very close fit. They have wheels designed for the very quick movements of this sport.
The third type is the speed skate. Speed skates have five wheels, a long wheel base, and a low-cut leather boot. They typically have no brake. These are usually for very experienced skaters and racing.
The fourth type is the freestyle skate. Most moves that are done on the ice can be done with these inline skates. The boot is similar to ice figure skates, but uses a pick stop mounted on the frame.
The fifth type is the fitness skate. These skates are similar to recreational skates. They are usually lighter, have a lower- cut boot, and have larger wheels. They can also be used for cross-training.
Last but not least is the aggressive skate. These skates are made for doing stunts on ramps and rails. They have smaller wheels, grind plates, and are constructed to withstand extreme use.

April Spring Break Training Program As Spring Break was approaching many people realized it was time to focus on being in shape and looking their best. However, some need that extra motivation or push from behind to get them going. That is exactly what the Wellness Center at the Rec Complex was trying to do by offering a six-week training program. The program offered fitness consultation with a fitness consultant, an exercise program designed specifically for the individual, follow-up sessions each week and optional nutritional counseling. The program began on Feb. 3 and ended on March 14. LaToya Farris, graduate of Kansas State in 2000 is one of the many people who jumped at the opportunity to become more fit. Farris was not even planning on going anywhere for Spring Break, but she viewed this as her chance to get in shape with the help of someone else. “I just wanted to do it because it was a motivation to get started working out again. I’m not going anywhere, but I just wanted to get back into shape,” said Farris. “My overall main goal was to lose body fat, and I knew this was a good way to learn how.”
