Romanian is closer to classical Latin than it is to other Romance languages, and the grammatical structure and basic word stock of the mother tongue are well preserved. Speakers of French, Italian and Spanish won't be able to understand much spoken Romanian but will find written Romanian more or less comprehensible. Romanian is spelt phonetically so once you learn a few simple rules you should have no trouble with pronunciation. Romania is the only country with a Romance language that does not have a Roman Catholic background. It is 86% Romanian Orthodox, 5% Roman Catholic, 3.5% Protestant, 1% Greco-Catholic, 0.3% Muslim and 0.2% Jewish. Unlike other ex-communist countries where the church was a leading opposition voice to the regime, the Romanian Orthodox Church was subservient to and a tool of the government. Today it is hierarchical, dogmatic and wealthy. Romanians are extremely hospitable. They will welcome you into their modest homes, feed you until you burst, and expect nothing in return other than friendship. Don't rebuff it. Those who live to eat have long found life pretty dull in Romania. Restaurants still serve traditional, sometimes tedious fare: grilled pork, pork liver, grilled chicken, tripe soup and greasy potatoes, though things are turning around. You can find excellent offerings in the larger cities with a little perserverance. Romania's most novel dish is

A very eventful last few days. How many of you knew that Friday was International Women's Day? Not much celebrated in the US or UK, but a big deal here, a combination of Mothers' Day, Secretaries' Day, and International Women's Day. Apparently a lot of businesses (especially those where the women are mostly in clerical capacities) give their female staff the day off. In our office it was a half-hour break in the afternoon where everyone regardless of gender had some home-made wine, chocolates, cookies (that's sweet biscuits to the Brits). The women did get served first, and everyone drank a toast to them. Probably this scaled-down version is a consequence of the fact that the women in this office, while fewer in number than the men, certainly hold equally responsible jobs. Friday evening, my friend Adrian Mihalache [who, as of March 2003 no longer seems to have a personal web page, but you can find plenty by and about him, in several languages, via a Google search on his name] had the launch party for his new book, Navi-Gand-Ind subtitled, effectively "An Introduction to Cyberculture". (You can find plenty about Adrian on the web, just Google his name. He's a high tech type and very much a web culture person, as you might guess from the subtitle of his book. As for the book, if you use Microsoft e-books and you read Romanian, you can

"Romany culture and civilisation" by Mihai Merfea Roumanian language please! PRESENTATION ROMANY CULTURE AND CIVILISATION    Romany culture and civilisation represents one of the most controversial chapter subjects concerning the Romany population. The work has two parts (Part I: Concerning the Romany culture, Part II: Romany Civilization) and is a sociological research.    Another chapter presents the Romany population as an inspirational source for writers such as Romanian and foreign writers: Ion Budai Deleanu Nicolae Balcescu, Mihai Eminescu, Ion Luca Caragiale, Cervantes, Victor Hugo, Merime, Federico Garcia Lorca, painters: Nicolae Grigorescu, Theodor Aman, Arthur Verona and composers: Bizet and Ion Voicu.   The second part of the work “Romany Civilization" presents the skills and the professions of the Romany population. An important part represents their social integration as a way of active participation within the civil society and not assimilation. In this respect there is presented data obtained through empirical sociological investigations made in Punjab and in Romania, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Slovakia, Bulgaria, Germany, England etc.    Other elements of Romany civilization are presented: their religion, their nomadic and sedentary family, the biths the marriages and the funerals. The traditional and new social organization is presented through the role of the formal and informal leaders: judges, cnezi, bulibasa, kings and emperors. Krisul Romalo as a courthouse is analyzed through . the values which are used in order to promote the peace inside and outside the microcommunity.
