Prior to de la Condamine, Spanish explorers had noted that certain South American Indian tribes had a light-hearted time playing ball with a substance that was sticky and bounced, but it failed to rouse their scientific curiosity. Some tribes had found rubber handy as an adhesive when attaching feathers to their person; and the so-called "head-hunting" Antipas, who were fond of tattooing, used the soot from rubber that had been set on fire. They punctured skin with thorns and rubbed in the soot to achieve the desired cosmetic effect. Making Your Own Rubber Stamps By Carol Kinloch Have you ever had an idea for a card but cannot find the image you want, or want stamps but they are from different retailers, so all the postal charges will make it too expensive. Have you ever thought of having your own stamps made up, exactly how you want them, if so read on. I had a sheet of A4 art work made up into unmounted rubber stamps. You can cram as much as possible onto a sheet, you just need to leave a 5mm border around the sheet and enough space around each image to cut out the finished rubber images. Have a go a making a few changes to simple pieces of clip art to make them your own work. Black and white line images are the easiest to work with. I found an image of a bare tree that I liked but there were 3 trees making up the piece of clip art. The first thing I did was enlarge the image to the size I wanted my tree to be. Print out the image, cut out the first tree and discard the other 2. I then decided the tree was a bit too bare so I added some more branches with a fine black ink pen like an Edding pen. See example I have Serif Draw Plus on my computer with a Wizards section that draws shapes for you. Check out some of the packages on your computer and you might find something similar. I started with a simple heart shape and copied it, reduced the copy in size slightly and repeated the smaller heart again, so that I ended up with 1 large heart and 2 smaller ones. If you can rearrange the images on the computer so that you can overlap them and place them were you want all the better, if not cut them out and make an arrangement of your choice that way. As a final embellishment I added some swirls and dots to decorate the hearts, and there I had it my very first stamp that I had designed myself!! See the following

I can usually throw something simple together in about 5 minutes. All you need is: An old inner tube (like from a bicycle) A scissors (or very sharp knife) Rubber Cement Something to glue your stamp to (like a block of wood) First thing is to cut a piece of tube long enough to put your design on. Then cut it down one of the ridges so you can lay it flat. Brush off the powdery substance on the inside, and draw your design (on the smooth interior of the tube.. this way your design will look nicer. If you use the outside, the design will have lines running through it and rough areas) with a permanent marker. It will be difficult to see, but I can't think of anything else that would work better (and not harm the stamp). Next, use a scissors to cut out your design. You can try to use a sharp knife, but this is difficult because of the way the rubber stretches. I've found a sharp scissors to be much easier. Once you're satisfied with your design, find something to glue it to. A block of wood about the same size as the design is good. Otherwise, any flat surface will do. I've used the bottom of a whiteout bottle, the bottom of a tape dispenser, even an old CD.

A Simple Method of Making Raised Letters for Casting by Hank Kaminsky When raised lettering is required or necessary on the surface of a metal plaque, sculptural form or a piece of jewelry there are a number of ways to go about it. Commercial pattern letters are available from foundry supply houses in a variety of fonts and sizes. These sprigged or sticky-back letters can usually be applied to flat surfaces and can then be molded. For logos or calligraphic lettering or where the type styles or flatness of commercial pattern Ietters are not acceptable letters can be carved or sculpted out of wax or plastellina and then molded, cast in wax for the lost wax process or cast in pattern material such as plaster or Bondo, etc. for ramming up in sand. Letters smaller than 3/8" are another problem. Intricate forms like these are difficult to carve out of wax or other material. Commercial pattern letters are not available in these small sizes. The rubber stamp industry offers a quick and mostly acceptable method to produce lettering for these situations or when the time is not available to carve a logo or special design. I'll get into the part of this process which makes it less than perfect later. Some rubber stamps are made from a UV catalyzed polymer. In this process a pool of the liquid polymer is poured out on a glass sheet within an area lined with dams made of foam strips. A sheet of negative film with the lettering on it is laid over the pool and a second sheet of glass placed on top. The sandwich is exposed to ultraviolet light. The polymer hardens under the clear areas where there is lettering and stays liquid under the opaque areas of the film. After a very precise period of exposure the sandwich is disassembled and washed. The unhardened polymer washes away leaving the lettering as raised forms. The precise exposure is necessary so that the shoulders of the letters form at an angle which will support the use pattern of the stamp.
