Russian Fine Art Book Collection at Stanford University Libraries
(Description was prepared by Valentina Fedorova, Hermitage, St. Petersburg and Wojciech Zalewski) Stanford's RUSSIAN art collection is housed in several locations: in the Green Library stacks (temporarily at the Stanford Auxiliary Library), in the Art Library, in Special Collections and at the Hoover Institution Library. The Hoover component is not cataloged on line but it can be accessed through a card file in the Hoover Library Reference Room. The Hoover collection was acquired mainly by Professor Frank A. Golder during his travels to the Soviet Union in the 1920s and represents pre-revolutionary, often rare, materials. A significant portion of it is duplicated in the Green Library. The following comments take into consideration all print resources available at Stanford, regardless of their location. (See Films and CD ROM holdings elsewhere.) They intend to offer a general impression of the collection by exemplifying categories of materials rather than following an outline of the history of art.
Reference Materials

Red-hot Art of the Revolution In 1920s Russia, Art was redefined in a whirl of optimistic modernism. But with Stalin around it couldn't last. Watch programmes on Rodchenko and Shostakovich on Artsworld...

When the October Revolution broke out in Russia in 1917 - in November - it had been preceded by months of wrangling. The Mensheviksnd Bolsheviks had shared power since the overthrow of the Tsarist regime that February, but the alliance had been uneasy.
An extraordinary time of activity and optimism followed. Gone were Tsarist restrictions and censorship. At times it seemed as if the whole society was in ferment, vigorously debating free love, emancipation, education, religion, philosophy, proletarian culture and everything else.
The effects particularly on the arts were groundbreaking: a true Cultural Revolution. Pre-revolutionary styles, associated with the taste of the former ruling classes, were hastily consigned to the scrapheap. The Russian avant-garde - artists, architects, composers and writers - leapt into the service of the new government, which promised a bright future. They included names such as Alexander Rodchenko (watch Artsworld's programme on 12 Jun), Kazimir Malevich, Vladimir Tatlin, Mikhail Larionov, Anna Goncharova, Alexey Shchusev, Sergei Prokofiev, Dmitri Shostakovich (watch Artsworld's programme on 2 Jul), Mikhail Bulgakov, Boris Pasternak, and Sergei Eisenstein.

French-Russian art show's name has Putin grumbling
Associated Press PARIS Visiting Russian President Vladimir Putin objects to the name of an upcoming Paris art exhibition When Russia Spoke French: Paris-St. Petersburg 1800-1830 Putin "Russia never spoke French," Putin said at a news conference Tuesday to present the exhibition. "The name is not exact." The exhibition, meant to underscore French-Russian friendship, opens May 20 under the gilded dome of Les Invalides, where Napoleon is buried. It will include French art pieces and works lent by the Hermitage in St. Petersburg and the Kremlin Museum in Moscow. Putin and French President Jacques Chirac are patrons of the show, part of celebrations marking the 300th anniversary of the founding of St. Petersburg, known in Soviet times as Leningrad.

    60. Russian Recipes
Recipe for crayfish and borshch, provided by online art store.
    http://www.russianart.com/recipes.html
    Recipes Crayfish au Natural
    2 pounds of live crayfish
    10 black peppercorns
    2 medium carrots, diced
Bouquet garni of parsley, dill and 3 bay leaves tied in a cheesecloth bag
    2 onions, diced
    10-12 cups of water
    2 tablespoons of coarse salt
    1. In a large pot, bring 10-12 cups of water to a boil over medium-high heat. Add the well-rinsed crayfish, carrots, onions, salt, peppercorns, bouquet garni, and boil for 10 minutes.
    2. Serve crayfish in the pot with the broth, or drain and arrange them together with the vegetables on a large platter. Serve with pilzner and a hearty, crusty bread.
Preparation is similar to the recipe above. If you like a bit more tangy flavor, add 6 cloves and a 1 inch piece of fresh ginger. Use only 4 cups of water and substitute the rest with cheap beer. To accentuate the crayfish-beer bond, use the beer alone - 3 quarts or slightly more than a six-pack. Drain and serve with a mug of cold Czech pilzner and a hearty, crusty bread. Borsch (a quick way to fix it, by Ukrainian standards)
