Chagall Exhibition in Budapest It’s the perfect match – one of the largest synagogue buildings in the world hosting the works of one of Judaism’s most beloved artists. A vibrant exhibit of Marc Chagall’s paintings and drawings entitled "Landscapes of Memory" is on display at the Jewish Museum and Archives in the Dohány Street Synagogue complex until the middle of October. "Landscapes of Memory" covers a wide range of themes, from Old Testament prophets to scenes of war. It also combines the artist’s more well known colorful oil paintings with ink and pencil drawings.
Her white gown makes her the focal point in a primary-colored landscape. Also rich in warmth is the lovely 1977 work "The Family," in which a rapt-faced woman in a Russian village holds her child. With typically dream-like touches, Chagall includes people in shades of blue and gray watching kindly over the woman as if to remind her that she is part of a wealth of tradition. In the Magrittesque 1949 work "Wall Clock with Blue Wing," a clock floats above a village in a black sky, with the barest outline of a man with a pack on his back below. HUNGARY REJUVENATES POLITICAL AND ECONOMIC TIES WITH RUSSIA
Andrew Princz
First Official PM Visit to Moscow in Seven Years Hungary revitalized political and economic relations with Russia when the first official visit by a Hungarian premier to Moscow for seven years took place in December 2002. Following meetings with Russian President Vladimir Putin Prime Minister Péter Medgyessy declared an initial coup in obtaining a promise of a USD 90 million cash payment - due this month- as a partial payment on Russia’s long outstanding Soviet-era debt. "A fair agreement has been signed that settles the debt issue between the two states without mediators," Medgyessy said. After the signing of several commercial deals, and making a pledge for increasing high level bilateral meetings at the summit, Medgyessy declared that Hungary was now set to recapture its position in the market of its vast, influential neighbor. Putin was quoted by the Russian press as lamenting the decline in bilateral trade between the two countries, which he said declined by some 6.6% in 2001, and 7% this year - and welcomed the Hungarian initiatives. "I am certain that your visit will serve as an impetus in developing our relations in all spheres," the Russian leader told Medgyessy.

In May 2003, the world will celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of the city of St. Petersburg, Russia, in the swampy delta of the Neva River in 1703. For over 200 years St. Petersburg would serve as the capital of the Russian Empire (1712 to 1922) and the seat of the Romanov dynasty. The city's builder was the extraordinary and still controversial Tsar Peter the Great, whose rule marked the end of Old Russia and the emergence of the Russian Empire as a world power. His imperial city, built on Russian soil by Italian and French and Russian architects, is today an international capital of culture where East meets West and Past meets Future.

Frederick Starr WASHINGTON - America's campaign in Afghanistan has succeeded beyond its planners' wildest dreams. But after the Taliban's sudden collapse, the United States faces three new challenges. Any of them could throw Afghanistan back into chaos. How will US planners handle these challenges? The signs are far from encouraging. The first problem arose when the Northern Alliance flaunted the US's explicit requests and pushed prematurely into Kabul, setting itself up as a nationwide government. It sent in its own president, Burhanuddin Rabbani, an ethnic Tajik; took over the "power" ministries; began appointing governors; offered government posts to friends; and told the UN not to send international peacekeepers. Nothing could be more calculated to inflame the passions of the plurality Pashtun population, not to mention the 16 million Pashtuns in nuclear-armed Pakistan. This fact was lost in the euphoria of Kabul's fall. But as soon as the Taliban is out of the way, Pashtuns will turn against Mr. Rabbani and his fellow usurpers. A new war will surely follow.

Music: Classical Review: Shostakovich By Lawson Taitte / The Dallas Morning News These pieces, mostly written right before Stalin began to cut the Soviet Union off from international musical influences, show how up to date Russian composers could be in the 1920s. One of Dmitri Shostakovich's earliest hits, for instance, was a sassy instrumentation of "Tea for Two" – so popular the composer had to incorporate it in a ballet. Much of the music on this disc has amazing links to what Kurt Weill was doing in Germany at about the same time. There's that satirical edge, a sense of sultry foreboding. The suite from Shostakovich's ballet The Bolt could have served as background music for a Charlie Chaplin or Buster Keaton film. The bouncing rhythms often turn sardonic and even circuslike. You could even say they foretell the scores that Nino Rota would turn out for Fellini's greatest films three and four decades later. Shostakovich B+

Movies: Reeling Fallen stars By Charles Ealy / The Dallas Morning News You get up in the morning, pop a bit of liquid ecstasy, hop in the car and cruise the streets of Malibu. You weave a little, the cops hassle you, and then they drag you into the station. But hey, it's no big deal. People should just chill. You call your lawyer, and you're out in time to take lunch at your fave restaurant with friends. But you accidentally let your gun slip from your pocket, and you don't notice that it's missing till you leave. So you head back in to get it, and when you return to your car, you discover that someone has shot the gal who had lunch with you. What a pain. The only way to take your mind off such troubles is to go shopping and hang out in the dressing room, where it's only natural to start snipping tags off of clothes. But when you try to leave the store, a snarky security guard accuses you of shoplifting. He says he has video. Then he says the store is going to prosecute you. Sheesh! It's getting to where celebrities are treated like real people. It's enough to make you vandalize a cab or punch someone in the face.

Backstage - Russian 'Tosca' canceled in Escondido
PAM KRAGEN
Staff Writer
The Russian opera company that was scheduled to present Puccini's "Tosca" in Escondido in March has canceled its entire West Coast tour, including the local date. The Russian State Opera was scheduled to make its debut at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, on March 13 for a performance of "Tosca" that had already sold hundreds of tickets. But scheduling difficulties forced the Russian company to cancel all of its West Coast dates. It will continue with its planned East Coast tour. JoAnne Ewan-Kroeger, the newly appointed director of performing arts at the Escondido center, said she is disappointed at the cancellation because opera and vocal music are so popular with the center's subscribers. She said she hopes that "Tosca" ticket-holders will exchange their tickets for seats at two related operatic performances coming up later in the season opera diva Denyce Graves' solo recital on March 22 and Opera A La Carte's performance of "The Mikado" on April 26.

Russian 'Nutcracker' returns for ninth season to Escondido
PAM KRAGEN
Staff Writer
One of the most popular acts of the season for the California Center for the Arts, Escondido, arrives today with the opening of a four-day run of "The Nutcracker" ballet, featuring the Moscow Classical Ballet and the San Diego Symphony. "The Nutcracker" plays to 90 percent capacity or more at the arts center, and advance ticket sales are so strong this year that the center has added an extra performance this weekend, said Fred Tracey, assistant director of performing arts at the center. The arts center has brought the Russian ballet company back each holiday season since the company's first North American tour nine years ago. In 1999, the center added live musical accompaniment by the 55-member San Diego Symphony, which will be conducted here by Pavel Salnikov, music director for the Moscow Classical Ballet. The Russian troupe arrived at the center Wednesday, and symphony musicians will have several rehearsals with Salnikov before the production opens tonight.

Russia Says No Y2K Help

By Declan McCullagh
March 30, 1999 One of the problems with wars is that not everyone supports them. So when Russia, a country with reportedly widespread Y2K problems, announces its opposition to US bombing of Yugoslavia, it may be time to weigh the consequences. "The Russian Defense Ministry has refused to cooperate on the Y2K problem with the military agencies of the United States and other NATO members," Russia's Interfax news agency reported on Friday. Previously Russia had said it would exchange top military officials with America around New Year's Eve so both sides would know the other wasn't planning anything sinister. Officials have said that computers that warn of nuclear missile launches could give false results. The unsurprising cause of the chill: NATO's attack on Yugoslavia. Russia made its position clear at a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bulgak, Interfax said. Russia's cold shoulder comes as the US Senate's Y2K committee plans to hold a hearing on Russian nuclear power plants and weapons systems. In a letter to Vice President Gore, the panel said 14 Chernobyl-style, Soviet-designed nuclear power plants "are all threatened by Y2K failures."
