by Warren H. Carroll, Ph.D. From the beginning of their Christian history, it has been the special call and mission of the Slavic peoples to suffer for the Faith, to be nailed to the Cross with Christ. This has been the great theme of the history of both Poland and Russia. Christianity came to Russia through Ukraine, the two not then being separated, in 988 by the conversion of the king of Kiev, St. Vladimir. Before his conversion he had killed his brother and engaged in human sacrifice; afterwards he became a ruler of notable charity and gentleness who was only with difficulty persuaded that it was ever lawful for a Christian monarch to wage war. His instruction in the Faith came from Constantinople when he married the Eastern Emperor's daughter Anna, but he was also in touch with the Pope through Holy Roman Empress Mother Theophano, Anna's sister. A papal embassy went to Russia in 990, probably in response to reports of Vladimir's conversion, and was received by him "with love and honor" in 991, the year in which local chroniclers first mention "Russian bishops" at Vladimir's court. There are good reasons to believe that these "Russian bishops" were of the Latin rite, though using the Slavonic liturgy developed by Sts. Cyril and Methodius. The earliest Russian word for bishop

PETER AND RUSSIAN HISTORY
Peter the Great and his reign has become a focal point for most historians of Russia. For over two hundred years Russians have written a great deal, and talked even more, about Peter's activities. Whenever a discussion of isolated facts in Russian history has turned to consideration of their general significance it has been found necessary to refer to Peter's activities; and anyone discussing Russia's past philosophically has found it necessary to establish his academic respectability by commenting on Peter's activities.
Very often, indeed, Russian philosophies of history have been in the form of judgments of the Petrine reforms; and, by a remarkable feat of condensation, the meaning of all Russian history was looked for in the significance of those reforms, and in the relationship between the old and the new Russia. The Petrine reforms became the focus of all Russian history: they were taken as a starting point for the study of the past, and used by historians in an attempt to elucidate the future. Thus Russian history was divided into two periods, pre- Petrine and post-Petrine.
If we ask ourselves a series of three important questions we might come to a better understanding of Peter's long-range significance in Russian history. The three parts of the problem we must look into are, then, how much Peter inherited from unreformed Russia, how much he borrowed from Western Europe, and what he left Russia, or more accurately, what happened to his work after his death.

Soles From the Past In Depth: Explore World History Footwear Reveals Russian History
By Jennifer Viegas, Discovery News
Dec. 20
The study is the first extensive analysis of the Museum of Archaeology of Moscow's footwear collection, which includes shoes from the 12th through the19th centuries. A paper coinciding with the report appears in this month's journal Russian Archaeology Among the findings is that ancient Slavs were not short, as was previously thought. Soles for men's shoes suggest that males in 16th century Moscow were about 5'6", relatively tall for the time. Dmitry Osipov, a researcher at the museum who conducted the study, theorizes that the Vyatitchi and Kryvitchi Slavic tribes that had settled the region by at least the 10th century passed down this height. The tribes were known for their tall stature, strength and athletic prowess. Osipov told Discovery News, "The Russians had a variety of footwear including shoes, boots, high boots and bast (birch) shoes." He even found evidence for orthopedic shoes dating to the 16th century. Most boots at this time had identical left and right soles. The soles of some, however, were cut differently for each foot. "The different soles were used in correcting footwear for people suffering from longitudinal flat feet," he explained.
