Women's Sacred Time
A New Vision for an Ancient Way
by Judy Wilkinson Women today are individually searching and exploring their inner depths. Each woman holds the answers within to life’s questions. Some may even hold clues for others. In the "search" for answers some women find it helpful to gather together to share, explore and grow as individuals by combining their knowledge and talents. In my own life, the past few years of my journey have been very intense and beneficial. I have had the opportunity to work with some very wonderful women to help me on my way and for this I am very grateful. Just as I know they have touched my life, I too have touched theirs, thus being doubly blessed. I have come to realize upon my journey, as I speak to women of all different backgrounds, how important it is to have a sacred space for women to do their searching and healing. Thus began a new vision that I formulated while at my home, which is located at the north end of Turtle Lake on the fringe of the provincial forest. A vision of a sacred space where women can come and share, experience and heal their spirits. A place where women can experience nature and nurture and receive knowledge through a variety of techniques.

Can we not worship and create sacred time and space in the woods, fields, gardens, living rooms and kitchens, and even in our cars and shopping malls?

Click here to view our newsletter archives! Question authority. So says a bumper sticker I have seen on numerous occasions. In general I like that idea. It fits with my somewhat iconoclastic view of life: challenge assumptions, don't take old ideas without examining where they came from, don't be afraid to explore new ideas and options, and certainly don't let other people run your life. And in a bigger perspective, we realize that the human race would never make any progress if someone did not question and challenge the status quo, the old ideas. So, it should not come as a surprise, that as I was sitting in church this morning, I began to wonder, why do we build church buildings? And especially expensive, ornate church buildings? Is not God everywhere and in everything? Can we not worship and create sacred time and space in the woods, fields, gardens, living rooms and kitchens, and even in our cars and shopping malls? Would our reso urces be bett er spent elsewhere than in building these special buildings that seem to have such limited usefulness, and are generally so impractical? Yet, almost as soon as I asked the question, I began to answer it. (What, you may ask, was he thinking the whole time in church? Certainly not paying attentio n!) I t is important, for people in all cultures, religious t raditions, and o ver all recorded history, to have spaces defined as other and sacred. As we strive to connect with the spiritual, holy, and eternal aspects of our humanity, people everywhere have discovered

The Sacred Place, the Sacred Time and the Sacred Human Being By Father Raed Abusahlia
May 2002
The refuge of a large number of civilian citizens, among whom a few armed men, to the Church of the Nativity during the incursion of the city (by the Israel Defence Forces) stirred an international outcry that triggered a number of questions about the fact of seeking refuge in a place of worship for protection. I do not wish to trail, here, behind news reports, whose only aim is to highlight the thrilling, and the unusual with a view to draw universal attention. The question is much more important and deeper than we anticipate, therefore, I shall try to embark on the discussion of an idea that has long turned up over and over again in my mind. It is that of the “sacred place”, while leaving the concept of the “sacred time” aside, as I hope to lay a firm foundation for the idea of the “sacred human being.” In the Holy Bible we also find this concept in some texts that spoke about places of refuge for killers who did not commit a premeditated murder or the innocent who are accused, as they all could get there for protection so that their lives are spared and they avoid harm. In Deuteronomy, God said to the people “Thou shalt separate three cities for thee in the midst of thy land…. And this is the case of the slayer, which shall flee thither, that he may live; Whoso killeth his neighbour ignorantly…” God approved this law so “That innocent blood be not shed in thy land, … and so blood be upon thee.” These were the cities of refuge (Review chapter 19:2-10).

Pauline Rae smsm A SACRED TIME This year Christians and Muslims throughout the world will be sharing a sacred time. For Muslims, Ramadan, the month of fasting begins on November 27 leading to the celebration of Id al-Fitr (Eid) around December 26. At the same time Christians will be entering the season of Advent in preparation for Christmas, the Birth of Christ.
As members of both faiths pray according to their separate traditions their prayers will rise to the same One True God. And God who looks upon the faithful, both Muslim and Christian, with love, will listen to their prayers. The readers of Bridges will want to thank God for the closer relationships which are developing between us and to ask that we truly come to see each other as sisters and brothers.
This final issue of Bridges for 2000 celebrates the growing awareness of inter-religious dialogue as a necessary and practical dimension of Australian life. Within the Catholic Church, John Paul II by his words and actions has placed interfaith relations in a place of prominence on the Church's agenda. Previous issues of this Newsletter have recorded something of this. But, promoting good relationships across faiths is not only an issue of importance for Catholics.
In Australia, initiatives by other Christian churches, communities and fellowships, by other faiths and by groups and organizations in society in general are multiplying.

65. Archived Article: Ethics Matters
According to the late historian of religion, Mircea Eliade, religious consciousnessinvolves escape from secular or mundane time to the realm of sacred time.

Millennium Madness
Dr. Joseph Chuman Joseph Chuman is the Leader of the Bergen Ethical Society.
Millions of Christian fundamentalists eagerly await their rapture to heaven. Catholics report increased sightings of the Virgin Mary. In Japan, members of the Aum Shinrikyo sect release deadly nerve gas into the Tokyo subway. Eighty members of the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas are killed in a stand-off with federal officials, and 39 devotees of the Heaven's Gate cult in California decorously commit suicide as they plan to enter the next Level Above Human. These faithful, however different in their religious practices, share a common belief: the year 2000 the new millennium will mark the beginning of the end of the world.
Millennialism, from the Latin word mille, or thousand, is a religious term signifying the conviction that God expresses his will every 1,000 years by the destruction of one era and the emergence of another, usually brought on by a cataclysmic event. For many believers these eras, or dispensations, are fulfillments of biblical prophecy and coincide with years ending in three zeroes on the secular calendar. Hence millennialists await 2000 with great expectation and anxiety. For Christian fundamentalists, the Book of Daniel, the writings of Paul, and most of all, the Book of Revelation, if correctly interpreted, augurs the year 2000 as the beginning of End-time. The righteous will then battle the forces of Satan, Satan will be cast down for a period of a thousand years, after which Jesus returns to usher in the Devil's final defeat. Though there are many variations to these scenarios, all envision apocalyptic warfare as separating the eternally saved from the damned.

This young man had had a spiritual experience that baffled him and terrified him. This experience changed his perspective forever. Many people have these experiences. One thing that made this so fearful is because he didn’t know that - that many, many people have experiences like that, of ecstasy, or grief, or quiet joy that somehow erase the boundaries between ourselves and the universe, or at least soften them. There is a fascinating article in this week’s Newsweek. Evidently, scientists are mapping the brains of people who are deep in prayer and meditation and finding out what happens to the brain when people are having a religious experience. Unitarian Universalists are no longer afraid of the word spiritual. We use it all the time now. But what do we mean by it? It’s like that other word, God, where if you are going to have a meaningful conversation, you need to ask the other person what they mean by that word, because the word means so many different things to so many different people. Spirituality – what is it? You hear the words, “we need more spirituality in our services” or “I can remember the old days when nobody was talking about spirituality and it was better then.”

Jonathan Lawson Trudy Griffin-Pierce hooghan , are organized in microcosmic resonance with Navajo ways of viewing the cosmos and, particularly, the landscape. dighin diné ) who have the power to maintain the order of the world. For the Navajo, this ordering is always marked by movement and change. Griffin-Pierce noted that according to a prominent Navajo myth, the first Navajos were children of Changing Woman, a holy person whose physical form changed and renewed itself with seasonal cycles. These stories and associations, Griffin-Pierce explained, are represented microcosmically in the sand paintings which Navajo chanters build as part of ceremonies designed to remedy situations in which human error has upset the order of things. Griffin-Pierce suggested examples of a person improperly killing an animal, or wearing a ceremonial mask without undergoing the proper initiations or training. Personal illness is often attributed to such disruptions in the cosmic order, requiring a highly trained chanter to perform the appropriate ceremony. Some of these rituals, according to Griffin-Pierce, can continue for five or even nine nights, involving hundreds of songs and many sand paintings. The sand paintings, which form the symbolic center of such rituals, contain very specific representations of the Navajo world and its holy people; their designs and colors are maintained over centuries of continual use, according to Griffin-Pierce. These ceremonies must be held to restore order-to the patient and, by extension, to the whole universe, of which both patient and chanter are integral parts. Griffin-Pierce explained that the paintings, by recalling sacred time and sacred space, give the chanter and patient access to the power of the holy peoples of that reality-power which serves to reestablish the proper order of the patient and the universe.

CARMELITE SISTERS OF THE MOST SACRED HEART ContemplativeApostolic "The Love of God Has Gathered Us Together" OUR LIFE AND SPIRIT We are a contemplativeapostolic Congregation serving God, the Church, and His People through our lives of prayer, penance, joyful and loving service, and by sharing our life of prayer with all those whom we serve. Our Congregation joins the spirit of Carmel (prayer and penance) with the active apostolates. Because devotion to Mary has always been characteristic of the Carmelite Order, our Congregation is a Marian Way of Life. Following her example, prayer is our life and soul, as essential to us as the air or food is to our natural existence. We enjoy a close Community life praying, dining, recreating, and planning in common. Our daily schedule includes: chanting the Divine Office together every morning, afternoon, and evening, daily Mass, praying the Rosary together in Community, an hour of mental prayer each day, time for daily spiritual reading and community recreation, and engaging in our various apostolic works. OUR CARMELITE HERITAGE: We possess a rich heritage in Carmel. Saint Teresa of Jesus, Saint John of the Cross, and Saint Therese of the Child Jesus were all Carmelites. Our own Foundress, Mother Maria Luisa Josefa of the Blessed Sacrament, has recently been declared a Servant of God and her Cause for Beatification is in progress. During the revolution and religious persecution in Mexico in the beginning days of our Congregation, Mother Luisita became a light in that darkness of confusion and hatred. She established schools, hospitals, and orphanages. The very persecution which sought to destroy her work only spread it to another land, our own United States. Her ideal of combining contemplation with apostolic love taught her daughters to cling to God in mind and heart, while associating themselves with the work of redemption and spreading the Kingdom of God.

The Pyramids, Machu Picchu and Stonehenge are just three out of thousands of places around the globe known as "Sacred Sites." Sacred sites are believed to have been created by ancient peoples whose wisdom and knowledge has been lost over time. Sacred sites are located on energy vortices (like acupuncture points) along ley lines (powerful meridians of energy, like the earth's nervous system), on the surface of our planet. Sacred sites were and are meant to ignite inner wisdom, leading to a shift in one's attitudes and to spiritually-based action. Sacred sites vibrate with Universal Wisdom and psychic power. To visit any sacred site is like getting an acupuncture treatment which awakens and activates one's essential sacred nature. Lauren O. Thyme created TIME TRAVEL, as a result of a vision she received at the Cheesewring sacred site in England. TIME TRAVEL is a free information service on sacred sites and sacred site tours. Imagine that TIME TRAVEL is a huge shopping mall, with scores of sacred site tour companies and tours to choose from. Why travel with sacred tours? To travel to sacred sites with groups of like-minded people greatly accelerates and intensifies the energy and action of sacred sites through the potent force of SYNERGY.
