Links What It Is, What It Isn't Sarcoidosis is a relatively rare autoimmune disease that can affect the skin, lungs, heart, brain and nervous system, eyes, and other organs. Although the disease was first recognized about 100 years ago, little is known about what causes it and there is no cure. As an autoimmune disease, sarcoidosis is similar to diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and lupus in how it behaves and how it is treated. Depending on the severity, treatment may be needed to control what sarcoidosis does. Sarcoidosis can go dormant on its own or with treatment, and its symptoms often do not recur after the initial onset. In a small percentage of cases, sarcoidosis is chronic, requiring on-going treatment, with possible occurrence in other organ systems. Chronic sarcoidosis is apparently cyclic in its activity level, with flares of symptoms and more dormant periods lasting weeks or months. No markers have been identified as indicating how sarcoidosis is going to behave in any individual or how an individual with sarcoidosis is going to respond to treatment, although a physician experienced with sarcoidosis may be able to make a "good guess" based on his or her experience. Whether he or she is willing to voice that guess is another story entirely! Despite a century of research, little is known about sarcoidosis. Research has discovered what it is not. Among other things, it is not a cancer or tuberculosis or AIDS-related. It is not caused by pine pollen or other identifiable agents like pollution, airborne or otherwise. It is not progressive or contagious. You did not get it from someone else and you cannot give it to another person. As far as we know, nothing you did specifically caused your sarcoidosis.

My Mom. Before we knew my mom had Hodgkin's, she would sweat at night, sometimes had a fever and was very tired. Doctor V later felt small bumps in her neck -behind her ear. She had the bumps looked at in August of 1998, and we then found out she had Hodgkin's Lymphoma. My mom had undergone several different chemo regimens since then. During July 1999 she had a stem-cell transplant to rid her body of Hodgkin's. Most people that are treated for Hodgkin's do not need to resort to a stem cell transplant. It is a very strong form of chemotherapy with a dose 5 times as strong as other treatments. Here is a picture of my Mom when she went to the hospital to have her stem cells collected. She was in the bone marrow unit of the hospital for all of July 1999. During this time she was in a special germ-free unit, had round the clock nurses, and was on a special low micro-organism diet. She had trouble swallowing, eating, and keeping food down during this time, but quickly regained her strength. The stem cell transplant went well and my mom was able to recover quite nicely. After being home for several months, she began radiation therapy. With radiation there was a whole new set of side-effects.

This letter calls attention to a concern that some veterans, who served as deck grinders on aircraft carriers in the Navy during the 1970s through the 1990s, may have unrecognized, misdiagnosed occupational lung disease. Reevaluation of a Navy veteran who had been involved in grinding antiskid materials on aircraft carrier decks resulted in a change of diagnosis from sarcoidosis to pneumoconiosis. This case led to a study by staff of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) which found an increased risk for diagnosis of sarcoidosis, especially for African-Americans, associated with service on aircraft carriers. Conversely, another paper reported a decreased risk for a diagnosis of sarcoidoisis in Navy veterans who had served only on "clean ships." 2. According to Natesa P Shanmugam, MBBS, a private practice physician in Washington DC, United States, "sarcoidosis is rare when you look at the general population, but amongst minorities the disease is a lot more common. It can affect virtually every organ, and the cause is not known. It predominantly involves the lungs and over the years can lead to respiratory failure in 20 to 30 percent of patients." While working in the pulmonary critical care unity of the DC General Hospital, Dr. Shanmugam and colleagues set out to determine whether prednisone, which is given to patients with sarcoidosis for lack of any other therapeutic options, is actually helpful for this indication. He presented their findings here this week at the annual meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians (ACCP). The investigators retrospectively reviewed the records of 68 patients with sarcoidosis, all African American, treated at their clinic for at least six months. 26 patients had radiographic stage to 3 of the disease, and 42 had radiographic stage 4.

I am not medically qualified to say what happeded to me, but as you read through this you may conclude as I did, that it might have. Please read the information for which it is intended, information. Both of my parents died from complications of Parkinson's Disease. My brother died from Multiple Sclerosis. My sister has Lupus. My niece has Lupus. And now I have sarcoidosis. At this point it might be easy to suggest that genetically we were pre-disposed. But then enters my first wife, she has Lupus. This suggests environmental. Was there anything common? At the age of 5 in 1955 I moved with my family to a small farm in Colorado. I grew up as a farm kid. My sister went to college to study nursing. My brother left for the Army. Sis married a great guy and soon I had a niece visiting grandma and grandpa for the weekends. I left for Viet Nam, burried my father, got married and we lived with Mom for a while back on the farm. Then I burried my brother. Then my mother. Mom told us that during the 1970s both Colorado State and Federal Agencies where taking soil and water samples from the property but never told her why. Since many of her farming neighbors were dying of cancers and with reports of deformed animal births, she suspected a nearby facility called Rocky Flats that processed plutonium and beryllium for the nuclear war industry.
