Author: Karl Ho Objectives: This is the second part of the SAS short course series. It is designed for intermediate users who have taken the first class and want to advance the programming techniques in SAS. It focuses on the very first building block of SAS programming: the DATA step. After this course, you should be able to: 1. Understand SAS library and data file system;
2. Create and SAS data sets;
3. Store SAS data sets permanently;
4. Import data into SAS;
5. Export SAS data sets to other formats;
6. Use SAS/Analyst to perform simple statistical analysis.
Topics:
  • SAS for Windows: The DATA Step Manipulating and subsetting data set Subsetting Data Sets Using Array ... The KEYS Window
  • SAS for Windows: The DATA Step In this workshop, we focus on the first of the two major parts in a SAS program the DATA step. It covers data entry, reading raw data, data manipulation and management. We will follow up on the materials we have covered in the Introduction to SAS class and apply to more hands-on programming in this workshop. At the appendix, we provide a more detailed explanation on using the Display Manager System in SAS. Before your data can be analyzed by SAS, it must be in a form that the SAS System can recognize, i.e., a SAS data set. It is contingent on the Data step that reads in raw data, manipulates variables and stores data in designated area(s).

    5.7.6: Introduction to SAS programming
    A fundamental concern within distributed systems in general is the protection of data and business assets available through the information system. This is no less true in distributed, object-oriented systems. Valuable information exists in business objects. This information can be manipulated and accessed remotely and therefore must be protected from unauthorized use. The Security Service in WebSphere Application Server helps to protect these assets. The Security Service is used primarily to prevent end users from accessing information and resources that they are not authorized to use. Although these resources are predominantly distributed objects, they can also include resources, neither object-oriented nor distributed, used by business objects. In many cases, WebSphere Application Server is used to wrap legacy resources, such as existing business applications and enterprise data. Such resources are often centralized resources, held in a physically secure environments or in environments with restricted access over controlled channels. A key objective of object-oriented programming and business re-engineering is to provide for the abstraction of business resources that enables them to be used more readily in new applications. This abstraction frequently has the effect of increasing access to those legacy resources, resources that have been traditionally, either by intent or because of the limitations of technology, more restricted. Thus, the object-oriented approach has the potential for undermining the protection that legacy resources require and have traditionally enjoyed.

    5.7.6.1: Getting a reference to a Current object
    The Current class contains an implementation of the CORBA SecurityLevel2 Current object. The class provides access to security-level 2 function as defined in the Object Management Group (OMG) CORBA Security Service specification. A Current object allows you to obtain or manipulate the credentials that you want to use in your program. You can obtain a Current object in either the client or the server. However, you can only get a Current object if the Security Service run time has been installed and the ORB has been initialized. To obtain a Current object, using following steps:
  • Create a reference to the org.omg.SecurityLevel2.Current object, and then use the ORB.resolve_initial_references method to get access to the security Current object. Pass the string "SecurityCurren to the resolve_initial_references method.

A SAS program usually starts with A DATA step. A DATA step consists of a group of statements that reads ASCII text data (in a computer file) or existing SAS data sets in order to create a new SAS data set. The DATA step must begin with the DATA statement and should end with a RUN statement. Data set can be created and stored in a permanent library. Otherwise, it will stay in a temporary library (by default, WORK) which lasts as long as the current SAS session, i.e. such data sets will be erased when you exit SAS. http://www.datainfoworks.com/prog.html
    Most of our programming experience is in the SAS environment. We feel that this is the best environment currently available for implementing solution systems that integrate data entry and management, statistical methods, report generation and output presentation.
    We have many years of experience programming in the SAS environment developing
    • Data entry interfaces
    • Data management routines
    • Analysis programs
    • Macros
    • Graphics
    • Customized Reports
    • User friendly interfaces
    Some or all of the above can be combined to provide end-users with a seemless package for entering, managing and analyzing data, reporting results and managing output. SAS output can also be converted into other formats such as HTML for web presentation, inclusion in documents, presentations, etc. We are familiar with using the following SAS modules:
    • Base
    • Statistics
    • Graph including Annotate and DSGI
    • AF/SCL and Frames
    • FSP
    • PROC ACCESS, Pass through SQL
    • IML
    • MDDB Server and related OLAP
    • IntrNet - Java, CGI, Web enabled applications
    The SAS environment looks the same on any platform/operating system combination. The programs are almost totally portable. The only changes made are to file and path names or any other commands issued in the operating system (libname, filename, x command). Programs developed on one platform can easily be transferred to another platform with minimal re-writing of code. We have worked with the following:
    • Platforms
      • IBM PC compatibles
      • DEC Workstations and Alpha Machines
      • SUN SPARC Systems
      • HP Workstations

    We work within our clients' systems or use own bullet-proof macros for reporting. We program in many different styles, and can integrate seamlessly into work in progress. We write clear maintainable code with surgical precision. We offer sound advice on your reporting strategy, and execute the most demanding tasks. We provide FDA-auditable documentation of program validation, either of our system or yours.
    SAS Transport Files Are the Key
    Due to recent FDA requirements, SAS Transport files now play critical role in the reporting strategy. We are experts in this area. To learn more click here In our system, the SAS Transport Files also serve as the analysis datasets. The business rules are applied as derived information. By not duplicating effort we save time and increase accuracy. The idea is to centralize all business logic in the SAS Transport files. When the time comes to submit to the FDA they validated, documented and ready to go. And because they are the only data source, they are guaranteed to support the statistical analyses, tables and listings with 100% accuracy. The way we set it up, everything has to match.
    Keep the Reporting Programs Simple
    Through intelligent SAS Transport file design we keep the reporting programs streamlined and straightforward. The reporting programs go directly against the same SAS Transport files which are ultimately submitted to the FDA, minimizing error and simplifying validation.

    SAS Programming - Session 1
    SAS Software
    SAS software is used for data entry, retrieval, and management; tabular and graphical reporting; and statistical analysis. SAS programs may be run in several different modes. Under Windows the most common mode (the default) is to work in the "Display Manager System" (DMS), a workspace made of interconnected windows. Other common modes are batch mode, noninteractive mode, SAS/ASSIST, and SAS/Analyst. SAS is an interpreted language, and the programming statements are interpreted in blocks of code sometimes called "run groups". The two main types of run groups are DATA steps, used to create and modify data sets, and PROCs, the procedures that produce various types of output.
    Statement Rules
  • Commands should end with a semi-colon (";"). Commands may be written on a single line, or be broken across several lines for readability. A command may be broken anywhere there is a space between key words. Multiple commands may appear on a single line, although this is generally avoided for the sake of clarity. Blank lines may be inserted as needed for readability. Indentation may also be used as needed for readability.
