    Introduction to SAS programming Homework 4 Due: March 28, 2002 Use the SAS data set for the shark and whale data “ sea5.sas7bdat (click here to download) Please note that this is a SAS data file. Use PROC CONTENTS with POSITION option so you can see the variable names in the data ordered by position. Print first 5 observations using PROC PRINT with (OBS=5) option. It is always good practice to check your data first before you start your statistical analysis. Using PROC TTEST, test whether the length values differ by animal type (sharks vs. whales). Test for the weight values, too. Write down the assumptions used in the above statistical tests. Are these assumptions are reasonable in this case? Report and interpret your test results. Use a non-parametric test to test whether the length and weight values described in the question 1 differ by animal type. What is the assumption of the tests? Report and interpret your results. Create a categorical variable for the length variable using if/then statements. Do not modify the SAS data set sea5.sd2 on the c: drive, nor create a new permanent SAS data set.

    This course is designed to provide programmers with the skills necessary to access and manipulate and summarize data to produce reports. The focus of the course is to consider SAS in the data processing environment, program efficiency will also be discussed. Practice in the application of SAS concepts will be gained through the coding and testing of solutions to sample workshop problems.
    Audience: This course is designed for personnel who need the ability to manipulate data, summarize data and produce reports through programming with SAS.
    Topics:

    Using SQL in SAS Programming
    Duration:
    Summary:
    Structured Query Language (SQL) has been added to the base SAS system in order to take advantage of this standardized structured coding language. PROC SQL is a natural for individuals who are already familiar with SQL coding as well as new users to whom it would be valuable to learn this emerging language. SQL allows ready access to many different file types and databases with the same general metaphor of relational design and data representation of tables with rows and columns. This language also has the particular advantage in SAS of both a simpler and more efficient alternative to the match-merge. This course focuses on using Structured Query Language (SQL) for data retrieval within SAS programs from SAS datasets. Emphasis will be placed on extracting and manipulating data from multiple files or tables with simple and concise queries.
    Audience: PROC SQL is a natural for individuals who are already familiar with SQL coding as well as new users to whom it would be valuable to learn this emerging language.
    Topics:
      Introduction to SQL Procedure
      Constructing a Simple Query
      Selecting Rows
      Grouping and Ordering Data
      Selecting Rows based on Summaries
      CASE Logic
      Creating Tables
      Creating Indexes Modifying Tables Joining Tables Views Sub Queries Accessing External Tables (DB2)
    Prerequisites: Students should have a knowledge of basic SAS programming including: submitting SAS programs on your operating system, creating and accessing SAS datasets, invoking SAS Procedures, using arithmetic, comparison, and logical operations.

    http://www.ens.gu.edu.au/stats/sashelp/progconf.htm
    Confidence Intervals
    We often quote confidence intervals for a parameter, the SAS procedure is PROC MEANS. The format of PROC GPLOT is,
    PROC MEANS data=library.datafile lclm uclm alpha= conf level;
    VAR the variable(s) to be used
    RUN
    Where lclm and uclm are for lower and upper confidence limits and alpha is the significance level (defalut=0.05).
    Example
    Suppose you wanted to calculate the 95% confidence interval for price , the program you would write is,
    PROC MEANS data=sasuser.houses lclm uclm alpha=0.05;
    VAR price
    RUN
    SAS will output sonething similar to this,
    Doing this in ASSIST
    Doing this in INSIGHT

    56. SAS Programming - Scatterplots
    The program we would write is, PROC GPLOT data=sasuser.houses; PLOTprice sqfeet; RUN; SAS will output sonething similar to this,.
    http://www.ens.gu.edu.au/stats/sashelp/progscat.htm
    Scatterplots
    A scatterplot is useful in determining the relationship between two continuous variables. It is constructed simply by plotting the response Y variable (vertical axis) against the explanatory X variable (horizontal axis). Once constructed, one should look for what type of relationship exists. For example, is it positive or negative? Is it linear or does it appear to be exponential or quadratic? Is the variance from the fitted curve positive or does it change as the X's change? The procedure we use is PROC GPLOT. The format of PROC GPLOT is,
    PROC GPLOT data=library.datafile;
    PLOT the two variables to be plotted against each other
    RUN
    Example
    Suppose there was interest in the relationship between price and the size of the house (in square feet) for the houses dataset. The program we would write is,
    PROC GPLOT data=sasuser.houses;
    PLOT price sqfeet
    RUN
    SAS will output sonething similar to this,
    Doing this in ASSIST
    Doing this in INSIGHT

Due to the very positive feedback and high attendance, FDAnews is re-running the audioconference Sept. 24 for those who missed it. SOPs for SAS Programming will provide you with the SOPs needed for a SAS programming group to be 21 CFR Part 11 compliant. Presenter Dr. Joshua Sharlin, a former FDA reviewer and former instructor for the SAS Institute, has trained thousands of people how to design and develop SAS programs. In this session, he’ll provide you with model SOPs that will allow you to confirm the quality and comprehensiveness of your company’s existing SOPs. And, if you are lacking SOPs, this conference will give you the model SOPs you need (retrievable in Microsoft Word). This audioconference will: • Provide you with 12 model SOPs needed for a SAS programming group to be Part 11 compliant – SOPs covered include SAS installation, validation and security
