Descriptive Information on the Province Before looking at life in Saskatchewan from a Jewish view it is worthwhile to have some background on Saskatchewan geography and climate. A. Geographic Description The province of Saskatchewan lies north of the states of North Dakota and Montana. It is one of Canada's three prairie provinces and encompasses an area of 651,903 square kilometers (251,700 square miles). A population of approximately 1,000,000 people live in this vast land area today. More than sixty percent live in the two urban centres. The southern two thirds is mostly flat prairie. Before the first farmer came to Saskatchewan, herds of buffalo inhabited this land. The region was an expanse of windswept grasses.

The Department is a relatively new member of the University, being established in 1960 under the headship of J. Howard Richards. The Department now consists of 13 full-time faculty, 6 emeritus, associate and adjunct faculty, and several sessional lecturers working with approximately 80 undergraduate majors, 25 Master's and 12 Ph.D. students. The Department administers and participates in a number of interdisciplinary degree programs in addition to offering Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Master of Arts, Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degree programs in Geography. Lecture and seminar rooms as well as GIS, cartographic, remote sensing, hydrology, geomorphology, and biogeography laboratories located with faculty and student offices in the Arts Building on the University campus. From the rolling grasslands in the south to the pristine lakes and forests in the north, Saskatchewan excels in natural beauty. The name "Saskatchewan" is attributed to the Cree word "kisiskaciwan" means "swift flowing water" referring the South Saskatchewan river which was a major waterway used by the 18th century European explorers and fur traders. Saskatchewan was part of the Hudson's Bay Company's territory until 1869, when the government encapsulated it into the Northwest Territories. The Canadian Pacific Railway forged westward in the 1880's which opened the southern plains to settlers from many parts of the world. Saskatchewan became a province of Canada in 1905, with Regina as its capital. Until the start of the First World War in 1914, the Province's population grew rapidly. The Land Saskatchewan is part of Western Canada. The east and west boundaries are 102 and 110 degrees longitude west of the Greenwich Meridian. The south and north boundaries are 49 and 60 degrees latitude north of the equator.

INTRODUCTION The province of Saskatchewan is in the Great Plains region. It is bordered by Manitoba (E), Alberta (W), the United States (S) and the Northwest Territories (N). The southern border is the 49th parallel (which is the United States/Canada boundary). The 60th parallel is the northern boundary. Its shape resembles a rectangle. The area is 652,330 sq km (251,866 sq mi). Saskatchewan ranks fifth in size among the provinces of Canada. NATURAL REGIONS Saskatchewan lies in two major natural regions: the Canadian Shield (north) and the Interior Plains (south). The CANADIAN SHIELD makes up about forty percent of the surface area . area - Its southern edge begins north of the Saskatchewan River at the Manitoba border, continues west-northwest across the province, through Lac La Ronge to the Alberta boundary south of Lake Athabasca. landscape -The shield is an area of very old rocks ( which came from ancient mountains). Great glaciers moved across the shield creating an area dotted with thousands of lakes, rivers and bogs (poorly drained land). South of the shield are the INTERIOR PLAINS. In the time of glaciers most of this lowland was under the waters of Lake Agassiz, a prehistoric lake. During the Ice Age a great delta ( deposits of earth and sand ) was formed. The Plains region is mostly flat with some gently rolling hills and valleys.
