" NOT TAKING A SCHOOL BUS IS BIGGEST SCHOOL-RELATED VIOLENCE RISK" About this report Overview State-by-State Analysis About Dr. Cal LeMon ... Special Thanks
For immediate release Contact: Cal LeMon August 31, 2000 "NOT Taking a School Bus is Biggest School-Related Violence Risk" Springfield, Mo .-The single greatest risk to children in the United Sates is not violence inside the school building, but how they get to and from school, an independent safety expert said today in releasing his third annual Report Card on School Bus Safety in the U.S. According to school bus safety advocate Dr. Cal LeMon, "Most parents are under the mistaken impression that there is a huge risk of violence at school when, in fact, that risk pales in comparison to the risk of making the wrong choice in school-related transportation. The big yellow school bus may not be the 'cool' way to get to school, but it's the hands down safest way."

Avoid the Danger Zones!
School Bus Safety!
To be safe when they travel to and from school, follow these simple safety rules: AT THE BUS STOP:
  • Always walk to the bus stop. Never run. Walk on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the left facing traffic. Always go to the bus stop about five minutes before the bus is scheduled to arrive. While at the bus stop, wait in a safe place away from the road. Do not run and play while waiting. Never speak to strangers at the bus stop and never get into the car with a stranger. Always go straight home and tell you parents if a stranger tries to talk to you or pick you up. Wait for the bus to arrive, watch for red flashing lights and the stop sign to be extended, and cross only when all traffic has stopped. Look left, right, and left again before crossing.
ON THE BUS:
  • Go directly to a seat. Remain seated and facing forward for the entire ride. Talk quietly (so the driver will not be distracted). If you need to talk to the bus driver: wait for the bus to stop, raise your hand, and call the driver's name. Never throw things on the bus or out the windows. Never play with the emergency exits.

Taking the School Bus
How to prepare your child for the school bus
Most mishaps take place outside the bus, so here are some precautions you can take:
  • Don't let your children arrive at the stop too early. They may be tempted to wander or get into mischief.
  • Make sure they know what to do if they miss the bus: come back home; or if at school, report to a teacher B and never, never accept a ride from a stranger.
  • If the stop is a long way from home, plan and discuss with your children where they can go in an emergency.
  • If it is dark on the way to or from the bus, make your children visible. Use retro-reflective tape on their clothing and avoid dark colors.
  • Make sure they wait well away from the roadway, and stay well back until the bus has comes to a full stop and the door opens.
  • Explain they must walk at least three metres (10 feet) away when crossing in front of the bus so the driver can see them.
  • Forbid running, pushing and horseplay!
  • Tell your children to come straight home from the bus no detours.

Mr. Pickles’ School Bus Safety
Let’s talk class about an important and sometimes overlooked subject; school bus safety. Our Elementary School Bus Driver just happens to be “Mr. Pickles.” Our School Bus Monitor is “Sweetie Pickles, his adorable wife. We will be their passengers to and from “Pickles Elementary School as we learn proper etiquette and bus safety on our daily journey to and home from school. I chose Mr. Pickles, (the bus driver) and Sweetie Pickles to talk to you because they are patient, fun, educational, understanding, friendly and very, very safe drivers. They both care about children’s safety and think of their passengers aboard the bus as if they were their very own children. “Safety first!” Mr. Pickles always says! Sweetie Pickle’s thinks of different ways to keep the daily bus ride fun and exciting. They both love their jobs and the children respond really well to them. Read along now as they both share their ideas for bus drivers, children, bus safety, rewards for good behavior, bus etiquette, behavior problems, assignments for parents and lastly the Author’s opinion on school bus safety belts. Ready everyone? Here we go-oo-oo-oo-oo!
”All aboard!” Mr. Pickles announces. “We’re headed for Pickles Elementary School!” Announces Sweetie Pickles. A Bus Monitor, like Sweetie Pickles or a (parent) is important as this helps the bus driver concentrate on driving and children’s safety and not looking in the mirror at the kids behind him all the time. Parents can volunteer to be a bus monitor and it would show the parents all the responsibility the bus driver has with a busload of children. Okay kid’s let’s start with a

Hello. My name is Ed Lubowicki. That's me on the left along with Ernie Scott. Program Administrator for the Lee County Florida Safety Department.
You know I've been trying for more than three years to get New Jersey administrators up off their butts and recognize the seriousness of my plight. But it took a little more than 24 hours for Mr. Scott to welcome me into his busy office. And he listened to this 75 years young grandfather talk about school bus safety with an opened mind. And you know what? He thinks the idea makes sense! So much that he is quoted as saying

For over twenty three million students nationwide, the school day begins and ends with a trip on the school bus. The greatest risk is not riding the bus, but approaching or leaving the bus. Before the children go back to school or start school for the first time, it is essential that adults and children know traffic safety rules. School Bus Safety for Drivers
Drivers should do the following things to stay safe around school buses and school children:
When backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch out for children walking or bicycling to school.
When driving in neighborhoods with school zones, watch out for young people who may be thinking about getting to school, but may not be thinking about getting there safely.
Slow down. Watch for children walking in the street, especially if there are no sidewalks in the neighborhood.
Be alert. Children arriving late for the bus may dart into the street without looking for traffic.
Slow down. Watch for children playing and congregating near bus stops.

SafeGuard is a product of a very comprehensive testing program. SafeGuard combines current compartmentalization with an adjustable lap-shoulder seat belt developed to help reduce injuries in bus crashes, from frontal collisions to side impact and rollovers.
"The bus is definitely safer because the students are not moving around", said Janice Gatliff, Transportation Assistant Heritage Christian School. "The seat belts have conditioned the students to stay in their seats, and its safer for me as the driver because I'm concentrating on driving rather then disciplining a bus full of kids."

School bus safety
Those familiar yellow and black vehicles are the safest form of transportation in the country, considering the many miles and the travel conditions buses undergo to transport children to and from school, sports and other events. This is due, in large part to the many safety features built into school buses. School buses are designed to take a great deal of impact, not to crush in event of roll over, and to cushion children with compartmentalization between the seats in the event of a crash or a fast stop.
Definition of a school bus
In Wisconsin, a school bus is a motor vehicle which carries 10 or more passengers in addition to the operator, or a motor vehicle painted with legally required school bus markings, glossy school bus yellow trimmed in black, for the purpose of transporting:
  • Pupils to or from a public school or a private school or pupils to or from a technical college when required.
