By Kevin McAllister ARTICLE INFO PRO-SUBSCRIBER ONLY Doc # 12102 April/May 2003 Length 3 pages On page 37 of the magazine. Article Summary: ADVERTISEMENT So you're a K-12 educator and you want flexible control of student information. You need to add fields to your database, make new reports, and share data with teaching teams, academic departments, or programs such as special education, English as a second language, or tutoring. District, regional, or state decision-makers tend to think that by investing in a single district or region-wide Web-based system, they're solving everyone's data needs. However, this is rarely the case. About the Author: Kevin J. McAllister is president of inResonance (iR), a technology consulting firm and FSA Associate partner. Kevin was a teacher for 17 years, a technology director for a decade, and has served on regional and state technology boards. He has been developing FileMaker Pro databases for schools since 1992. With iR he speaks and consults throughout the United States and Europe, helping educators, schools, and districts with technology integration and database planning.

are a collection of information organized for search and retrieval . The electronic card catalog in the media center is a database. The computer program that keeps track of students who are present and absent is a database. A store manager would use a database to do an inventory (record of everything in the store). At home, your parents might keep everyone’s address and birthday in database on their home computer. In a database, you can sort information by putting it in numerical or alphabetical order. ascending - low to high or A to Z descending - high to low or Z to A Searching is the process of choosing all records that meet or satisfy a rule or criterion. For example, if in a database of your friends you needed to find which of your friends were born in June, you would perform a search. Information on one particular person or item in a database is in a record . The different categories of information in a database are fields . Attica High School Databases Attica High School students and staff have access to several online databases to meet our information needs. All can be used at school. Some of the databases also offer a feature called remote access. What is remote access? If you have internet access, it means that you can use those databases from home. If you want to try it out, stop by the LMC and pick up a remote access handout. These handouts list our username and password. The usernames and passwords need to be typed exactly as shown on the handout. The databases listed below are the databases that are available for Attica students this year. They all can be used at school. The linked databases are those that also have remote access. See Mrs. Metz if you have any questions or problems. II. The technological environment of the law school of the future
A. Overview
The "work station" of the future will be an electronic computer environment seamlessly combining telecommunications (providing access to internal and external databases, to students and colleagues through local E-Mail and E-Mail on the Internet or similar information "superhighway") with specially designed "productivity" software tailored for particular classes of law school users. Specifically, that software will allow users to generate and retrieve electronic data and simultaneously allow users to organize and manipulate that data for their individual use. Each "work station" will be linked to the law school computer network which will become the technological hub of the law school of the future. (Throughout this Interim Report we have referred to this internal network as the "Law School Net".) The Law School Net will be one of the principle mechanisms through which students, faculty and administrators will communicate, and the primary medium through which they will obtain and manipulate information and data. The Law School Net will likely be a single "internetwork" which will unite several local area networks within the law school environment. For example, many separate internal networks (ie. faculty net, student net, administrative net, clinical net, library net, etc.) will be integrated with each other through the Law School Net and become available to the entire law school community, as appropriate.

Should all nonconfidential law school databases be freely available to all librarypatrons (potentially worldwide) or should libraries exert stricter controls
http://www.law.cornell.edu/mdc_udsl/sect5f.html
V. The law library the legal information center of the future
F. Role of the Library in the Information Age
Libraries have historically served as storehouses of information created and disseminated by others. Librarians tracked current publications and selectively acquired and indexed those materials. It is easy (and therefore common) to fall into the trap of viewing the library of the future as nothing more than a digital version of the traditional information warehouse. But this trap is dangerous and potentially costly, if not fatal. We are entering an age when information is fast becoming an item of stock in trade and those who seize the opportunities to create and categorize information will outstrip those who do no more than serve as passive receptors. One of our commentators, Peter Martin, Professor of Law, Cornell Law School, put the challenge to the Committee succinctly: ...[the Discussion Draft] reads as though the legal information universe was comprised of LEXIS/Westlaw, print and a few specialized CD-ROMs. The explosion of legal information products and sources is only suggestive. Five years from now, schools will have very hard decisions to make about information sources. Even harder choices lie on the information and expertise production and distribution side. The school and its resources will be in more direct competition with others. Deciding how to focus limited teaching and research and electronic publication resources to maximum effect within a radically altered information/expertise marketplace will be difficult enough for those institutions that recognize the challenge. Those that imagine they can continue more or less as they are with a technological boost will, I predict, be left behind.
