E-mail: psych@ksu.edu The Department of Psychology at Kansas State University provides educational and research opportunities at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. At the undergraduate level, the department provides introductory service courses for a large portion of the total undergraduate student population. Our undergraduate majors typically follow one of three tracks: some students plan ultimately to attend graduate school in psychology; other students desire an undergraduate program that will lead to a job specifically in a particular area (e.g., an entry level counseling or clinical position); while other students simply want to obtain a Bachelor's degree and enter the workforce. In each case, the curriculum in the Psychology major is purposely flexible to accommodate these paths. The Psychology Department also has a strong graduate program consisting of four major areas of concentration: Industrial/Organizational, Social/Personality, Cognitive and Human Factors, and Animal Learning/Behavioral Neuroscience. In general, graduate students are accepted as potential Ph.D. candidates although the department does have a distance

Frances L. Hiatt School of Psychology
Psychology at Clark has a very distinguished past. From the 1890s to the 1920s, Clark was the international center for the study of Psychology, and most of the Psychology journals in the United States were once published by the Clark University Press. Noted Psychologyist G. Stanley Hall, the University's first president, founded the American Psychologyical Association at Clark in 1892. Another leading Psychologyist, Heinz Werner, came to the University in the 1950s and established the unique character of Psychology at Clark as thoughtful and empirically rigorous, with strong international connections. This distinguished past is the basis for our present teaching and research and future goals. We continue to develop Psychologyical science at its best, linking theoretical perspectives with empirical work. We are one of few Psychology departments in the United States that provide students with a background in both quantitative and qualitative methodology. Although aligned with the general developmental science perspective that is at the forefront of contemporary Psychology, our faculty adhere to a variety of theoretical orientations, which allows us to promote new ideas.

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGISTS AND ASSESSMENT
COUNSELORS AND ASSESSMENT
Both school psychologists and counselors are involved in the assessment process with differing emphases and orientations that are complementary to each other. School psychologists often emphasize the use of quantitative approaches to measure ability and academic skills while counselors often utilize developmental as well as qualitative approaches to assess personality characteristics, interests, and aptitudes. The two approaches, when combined, can offer a more comprehensive picture of a student than either approach alone.
MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAMS AND COLLABORATION
With the advent of Public Law 94-142 (the Education of All Handicapped Children Act) and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), emphasis was placed on a multidisciplinary approach to assessment and placement activities for students referred for possible disabilities. Multiple sources of information, multiple procedures and multiple settings are required in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of students' needs and abilities. The basis for such an approach is collaboration among professionals including regular education teachers, special education teachers, administrators, pupil services personnel, and parents.
