West of Scotland Sites and Monuments Record
The West of Scotland SMR
The West of Scotland Archaeology Service (WoSAS) maintains the Sites and Monuments Record for eleven Councils in Argyll, the Clyde valley and Ayrshire. The SMR covers an area of around 13,000 square kilometers, including some of the most fascinating prehistoric landscapes in Britain, including Upper Clydesdale, the Kilmartin Valley, and Machrie Moor. With over 20,000 records at present, the SMR aims to be a comrehensive and up-to-date record of archaeological monuments, fieldwork and finds for this area. As well as providing curatorial advice for development control and monument management purposes, WoSAS is keen to promote public access and enjoyment of the archaeology of the West of Scotland, and welcomes enquiries from members of the public and archaeological researchers. If you are carrying out research or fieldwork in our area, we would be pleased to provide information and assistance where possible, and in turn to receive any results into the SMR. The information supplied to the Archaeology Data Service is a subset derived from the SMR, downloaded on 1st December 1998. It comprises:

8. WEST OF SCOTLAND SITES AND MONUMENTS RECORD 2001 nomination by the West of Scotland Archaeology Service. The archaeology service Geographic basis Central to the SMR is a Geographical Information System, using software from ESRI that has been customised in-house. In addition to the Ordnance Survey mapping, the GIS module contains a range of data layers, some generated by WoSAS, others imported from agencies and Council Departments. Specifically archaeological and historical layers include known archaeological sites, areas of archaeological potential within 60-plus historical towns, scheduled monument areas (now supplied directly by Historic Scotland), archaeological fieldwork locations (excavations, surveys, watching briefs etc), designed landscapes, and digital survey data from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland and archaeological contractors. A range of other data layers are used to give information about the geographical context of any consultation, including the OS 1 st edition maps, geo-referenced to display in their true locations against the other data, an index to about 20,000 RAF aerial photographs (in process of entry), and external data such as the SSSIs and the National Inventory of Woods and Trees.

Renfrewshire Local History Forum The Renfrewshire Local History Forum was formed in 1988 to act as an umbrella organisation, bringing together all the societies in the county which have an interest in history or heritage. The Forum acts as a link between the various societies by publishing newsletters and giving details of events which might be of interest. In addition the Forum organises conferences and lectures on particular themes. Subjects covered in recent years include sport, food and cooking, children, and farming. The venue for these events moves around the county to enable as many interested people as possible to attend. In November 2002, a Conference was held at Maxwel Mearns Church Hall, adjacent to Mearns Castle, Newton Mearns. The Conference ' THE CASTLES OF RENFREWSHIRE' featured top name speakers from Historic Scotland, the National Trust for Scotland, Kirkdale Archaeology, The Association of Certificated Field Archaeologists and members of the Forum itself. Papers of the proceedings of our conferences as well as individual contributions are published in our annual Journal which is well enough respected to be held in the National Libraries of Britain as well as the New York Public Library. In recent times our main Conference of the Monastery and Abbey of Paisley was a great success and copies of the proceedings are still available.

    Archaeology Sites across Scotland
Archaeology in Scotland covers sites which go back to the days before recorded history when the standing stones, stone circles and megalithic burial chambers were being constructed, through the Roman occupation to mediaeval times.
Dark Isle This is without doubt my own personal favourite. Archaeology in Scotland This is a review of archaeology in Scotland by the University of Glasgow and contains articles on the significance of Celtic Coinage and excavations and surveys at Strome Castle, Wester Ross and Caulfields Military Way. Newstead Archaeology Project This site is dedicated to a project which is investigating the region surrounding the Roman Fort of Trimontium near Newstead, on the River Tweed. The Archaeological site has produced an outstanding collection of Roman artefacts, from humble wooden tent pegs to highly decorated military parade helmets. The Scottish section of Roman Military Sites in Britain provides brief details of lots of locations, together with a useful map showing the location of each of them.

An Oxford Archaeological Guide ANNA RITCHIE and GRAHAM RITCHIE Indispensable guides to the ancient past
Steeped in history and renowned for the beauty of its landscape, Scotland offers fertile ground for archaeology enthusiasts to explore. In this authoritative guide, Anna and Graham Ritchie provide fascinating coverage of over 250 ancient Scottish sites, including tombs, forts, cairns, churches, standing stones, and Viking settlements, dating from earliest times to 1200 AD. Arranged geographically within ten different areas, Scotland makes discovering these sites both enjoyable and intelligible. About the series Both the sophisticated armchair traveler and on-site explorer will find in Oxford Archaeological Guides the definitive references to the main archaeological sites of regions and countries around the globe. Written by eminent archaeologists and historians, often experienced tour guides themselves, this major new series of handbooks offers world-wide coverage of sitesfrom the mosques, synagogues, and churches of the Holy Land to the cairns, forts, and standing stones of Scotland. An innovative approach combines historical background with practical on-site information, including travel advice, museum tips, and glossaries. Entries examine the topography of a site, as well as place it in an historical context, thereby illuminating the culture whose remains the traveler encounters. Extensively illustrated with diagrams, plans, maps, and photographs that further elucidate the sites
